Heathfield Day Summer Camp
It’s for girls aged 7 to 15. Heathfield started its own Summer Camp for local girls so they could enjoy the high quality activities and sports that we were already offering to overseas students on our International Summer School (ISS). Over the years more than a thousand girls have attended the camp, many returning year after year and bringing sisters and friends with them. Returning students receive a 10% discount from their second year. Day girls arrive between 08:45 and 09:15 when activities start. An Early Morning option with Breakfast is available at 08:00. At 5:30 girls are collected and signed out by parents or can take our Late Stay option until 6:30.
Heathfield’s teachers offer the girls a fun-packed and educational daily program, balancing creative, artistic and sporting skills. Campers are grouped together according to age and move together between activities. There’re different programs for junior and senior groups.
Girls enjoy the opportunity to spend time as a day girl and as a boarder. They can stay from one day to four weeks. But residential stays are for a minimum of one week. Each Thursday afternoon we invite parents to an exhibition or show to see what the girls are doing. The exhibitions include cookery, art, craft and photography in weeks 1 and 3, and in weeks 2 and 4, music, dance and drama shows take place. For years, I lived out of a suitcase, ever ready to get on a flight whenever I got a chance. Discovering the world through the eyes of a writer, I diligently added note to every experience, committing it to paper for when memory faded. I was always eager for the next destination.
However, the pandemic brought all my flights of fancy to a sudden halt, as it did for everyone else. With the world locked down for months, the desire for travel in me waned. What place was better than home But what really was home
I was born in the costal city of Mumbai. Having lived here for 15 years, there were parts I knew at length and loved, and others beyond my comfort zone, which I hadn’t explored. I decided to become a tourist, seeing the city anew through the eyes of a visitor, rather than my bored ones as a local. I went on a sunset cruise for the first time on a tiny sailboat on the magical Arabian Sea.
But most of the time we spent indoors. The United Nations World Tourism Organization said the biggest challenge of pandemic travel is the uncertainty and the different rules in different countries to obey.
I finally got on a plane to make it to the closest destination possible to us by flight—the sunshine state of Goa, less than an hour away from Mumbai. Putting my toe into soft powdery sand was precious, even after a lifetime or exotic travel. After a week of bliss on the beach, though, I was relieved to be back home.
Ever since, I have made a few short journeys but the travel bug seems to have been put down, at least for now. But even as tourists will be flocking all over as revenge travel takes over, I have realized that there is no place quite like home.

Many African people have always dreamed that one day the capitals of all African countries will be linked by high-speed railway lines. Now they have one step closer to realizing that dream.
On October 10, 2016, Africa’s first modern electrified railway, the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway, became fully operational. This railway, built by Chinese companies, is the first railway built using a complete set of Chinese standards outside China.
But it has not been easy for Chinese companies to win Ethiopian support for the project. The Ethiopian government once considered Western standards the best ones. But thanks to China’s outstanding performance in building and managing railways, Chinese firms ended up getting the project.
“After rounds of talks, the Ethiopian government came to realize that Chinese standards are not inferior (次于) to western ones, and more importantly, they best suit the country, " Meng Fengchao, board chairman of China Railway Construction Corp, told Xinhua.
This is just another of China’s recent achievements in railway building. China has the world’s longest railway and they make up a huge 60 percent of the world’s total. Besides length, China also does well in speed. China is the only country with trains running at 350 km per hour on lines such as Beijing-Tianjin and Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railways.
Thanks to these achievements, it’s easy to forget that China wasn’t an early starter in the high-speed rail network game. Japan started 50 years ago, while Germany began 20 years ago. China only launched its high-speed railway14 years ago.
How has China’s high-speed railway been able to develop so quickly The driving force behind the fast development has been the country’s great need for transportation.
“The high-speed railway not only covers the distance, but also connects people, information and goods, greatly boosting the regional economy, people’s lives and tourism, ” Huang Xin, an official from China Railway Corporation, told China Daily. The high-speed railway has become the transportation of choice for many Chinese people. According to China Railway Corp, about 4, 200 bullet trains run in China each day, meaning that more than 4. 5 million passengers can travel.
This is only the beginning of China’s high -speed railway development. The National Development and Reform Commission said that China plans to have 38, 000 km of high-speed railways by 2025.
28.What can be learned about the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway
A.It was still under construction.
B.It links capitals of several countries.
C.It was the first electrified railway in Africa.
D.It was a combination of Chinese and West standards.
29.What is China’s recent achievement in railway building
A.China helps many other countries build railway.
B.Chinese standards suit most of the countries in the world.
C.China excels at both the length of railway and speed of trains.
D.China is one of the countries whose trains can run at 350km/h.
30.Which statement is true according to the passage
A.China was the pioneer of building high-speed rail networks.
B.China spent 14 years building a longest railway in the world.
C.China’s railway accounts for less than 60% of the world’s total.
D.China’s great need for transportation has driven railway development.
31.Which could be the best title for the text
A.China’s Railways Go to the World.
B.The Corporation between China and Africa.
C.The Railway Development in Africa.
D.The History of High-speed Railway in the world.

In 2007 a team led by Stefan Rahmstorf compared actual observations with predictions made by theoretical models for three key climate indicators: carbon dioxide, global temperature and sea-level rise. While the predictions got CO2 levels right, they were low for real temperature and sea-level rise.
Climate scientists have a surprising habit: They often underestimate the climate threat. The articles reporting the underestimates have been widely cited, so one might think that scientists have taken corrective steps. But recent studies of Arctic warming suggest that the problem may not have gone away. As polar ice melts because of global warming, the Arctic Ocean absorbs more heat, which causes the Arctic to warm even more. It should surprise no one that the area is warming fast. Yet scientists have been caught off-guard by just how fast the region is heating up.
In 2013, a paper was published pointing out that these underestimates represent subconscious bias (偏向) caused by defensiveness. Scientists tended toward lower and misleading prediction because they did not want to be accused of making dramatic and overstressed claims. Even now scientists continue to be accused of overestimating climate risks by worrying figures which get much media attention, thus biasing their models to be unrealistically conservative.
If scientists have underestimated Arctic warming, they have likely minimized amounts of permafrost (永久冻土) melting and methane (甲烷) release as well. And that could be truly dire because the permafrost holds about 1.5 billion tons of organic carbon, twice as much as now in the atmosphere. Were that carbon to be rapidly released, it could cause a picture: a runaway greenhouse effect. Whatever the cause, it’s time that scientists looked seriously at whether their measuring models continue to underestimate critical aspects of the climate problem. Low estimates can create the false impression that we have more time to fix the problem than we actually do.
32.Why is Rahmstorf’s research in Paragraph 1 mentioned
A.To highlight the urgency in global warming.
B.To show the inaccuracy of climate predictions.
C.To state the importance of precise measurement.
D.To express the difficulty in making right policies.
33.Why do climate scientists always underestimate climate threats
A.They are misled by the statistics.
B.Their reports have been widely cited.
C.They want to avoid blame for causing anxiety.
D.They aim to defend themselves from fake information.
34.What does the underlined word “dire” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Disastrous. B.Confusing. C.Impressive. D.Discouraging.
35.What’s the best title of this text
A.The Arctic Ocean Is Calling for Help B.Climate Scientists Are Under Fire
C.The Warming Pace Is Underestimated D.Climate Predictions Prove Correct

Text1:
M: Does Jenny plan to go to summer school
W: No, she wants to work and save some money in the summer.
M: That’s good. Maybe she can help and pay some of the university fees next time
Text2:
M: Home at last! That was the last time we had a holiday in the Lake District.
W: It was beautiful! At least it didn’t snow.
M: I would have preferred snow to constant rain. We had never seen the sun there!
Text3:
M: I’ll answer your question as soon as I finish wrapping the books for the gentleman.
W: Don’t worry about it. I’ll have a look at your new books.
Text4:
W: I got a traffic ticket this afternoon.
M: Were you parking in the wrong place
W: No, I was driving too fast.
Text5:
M: Hello, little fellow. You’re David Brown, right Mrs. Brown, what seems to be the problem with the boy
W: He’s got the flu these days, and he started to cough last night. I took his temperature this morning. It was 39 degrees.
Text6:
M: I take a fancy to this jacket, but it is expensive. Let’s go to have a look at other stores nearby.
W: Look at that sign. It says the casual wear is on sale now. All the jeans and pullovers here are 40% off today.
M: Then let’s look around. Oh, look at this pair of jeans. It usually costs $150, but now it costs just 60% of that. It’s just my size.
W: Go and try it on. It must look good on you!
M: OK. Will you go to the Kids Wear area to buy some clothes for our son
W: Yes, I’ll go there to have a look. I’ll wait for you at the cashier desk.
M: All right.
Text7:
M: Well, I started learning Chinese a long time ago. First I learned a little bit when I was in college. But I probably picked up most of it when I was overseas in Beijing.
W: Did you meet any difficulties in your learning
M: Yes, a lot. Grammar and vocabulary are not easy for foreigners like me. But two of the most challenging things when you study Chinese are the tones and the characters. Writing Chinese characters is like drawing pictures. As a Chinese character with square structure, its “form”, “sound” and “meaning” form a close combination, but the relationship between the three is relatively complex. I think that’s just extremely difficult. And it was frustrating to be teaching...teaching kindergarten students and realizing that their reading was much better than mine.
W: Of course they were. They have been exposed to Chinese for so many years.
Text8:
W: Chris, I would like to know, what kind of food you eat in Belgium.
M: We have our fish, our meat, our wines, our fruit…
W: I mean what is popular about Belgian food
M: Well, it’s a bit different in Belgium as I think it is here in New York. We really enjoy the tables.
We don’t go out for dinner that often but when we go out we stay at a table for three or four hours. It starts with appetizers, then it may be a soup, then it’s the main dish, then it’s still an ice-cream or something.
W: It takes so much time to have dinner in your country!
M: Yeah. We really enjoy eating and it goes slow. Last winter, a friend from Portugal went to Belgium with me. For Christmas dinner, we met at 5:30 and then we started with some drinks. I think we ate from 6 o’clock in the afternoon till 12 o’clock that night.
W: Wow! You must be fat there if you eat that much.
M: In fact we don’t. We don’t do it that often, but if we do, then of course the next day or the next few days you see people just don’t eat much.
Text9:
W: Mike, do you know why your brother is crying
M: I don’t know. Maybe because I wouldn’t let him play with my toys.
W: That’s not very kind. What do we say in our family
M: Sharing is caring.
W: That’s right. Sharing is caring. That means you two need to take turns with your toys.
M: But he always plays them alone! He never gives them back.
W: You’re his big brother. You need to set an example for him.
M: But sometimes he even breaks them!
W: I’ll ask him to be more careful. And you can ask him nicely to give them back next time.
M: But...
W: No buts, Mister! If you don’t listen to my words, I’ll tell your father.
Text10:
When 17-year-old Anika Puri visited India with her family four years ago, she was surprised to see many products made of elephants still for sale in the market, even though the ban on hunting elephants had been in place for many years. As a wildlife lover, Puri wanted to do something to help protect the species. After research, Puri noticed that monitoring systems currently used are based on visual recognition. They can’t get clear images of animals and hunters, so they are not quite accurate. Full of passion, Puri created ElSa, a machine learning software. Machine learning allows a program to “learn” by feeding on data, to then be able, for example, to analyze situations by itself. ElSa then can analyze movement patterns of humans and elephants. It is four times more accurate than the existing detection methods. Her invention got her a prize.
