Blue whales, the earth's largest animals, call to others of their kind, though exactly what these cries communicate remains a mystery. But these sounds have begun evolving Since at least the 1960s, the pitch (音高) of Antarctic blue whales has downshifted. Scientists have theories as to why: all involving humans.
The deepening of their sounds is not unique. Many blue whales around the world have also dropped their pitch. In the study last year that analyzed more than 1 million individual recordings of whale calls, pitch shifts were found across the species, and among populations (种群) that don't necessarily interact with one another. This is to say, whatever has caused the change doesn't seem to have a specific geographic origin.
The underwater noises caused by ocean traffic and at-sea industries might seem likely criminals. However, scientists have identified lowered pitch even across populations of whales that live in seas without major shipping routes.
One possible explanation for the change is the achievements of global conservation efforts. As their populations grow, the whales may have decreased their volume because they are more likely to be communicating over short distances.
Last year's study of whale calls also suggests a threatening reason for the drop in pitch, however. Perhaps whales don't need to be so loud because sound waves travel farther in oceans made acidic by the absorption of carbon dioxide.
Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, meanwhile, may also indirectly influence whale voices in other ways. A recent study shows that, during the summer, the whales must use their top volume to make themselves heard in the cracking ice — a natural sound increased by unnatural processes, as rising temperatures worsen ice-melt. So the impacts of a warming planet may modulate animal sounds even in remote places.

A.Across the species. B.In the Antarctic Ocean.
C.Among some populations. D.Within one million individual recordings.
2.What causes the evolving of whales' pitch according to the text

C.Sharp decrease of whales' populations. D.Underwater noises by ships and industries.
3.What does the underlined word "modulate" mean in the last paragraph
A.Produce. B.Damage. C.Balance. D.Change.
4.What can we infer from the text
A.Man is the soul of nature. B.Man and nature are in one.
C.Nature pardons no mistakes. D.Nature has the final say over man.
Last night's fall of snow here was not only an event but a magical event because it is the first fall we ①__________(have) here this winter. When I got up this morning, I was excited to find what ②__________ extraordinary change it was just overnight!
The world was a cold place of dead white and pale blues. The light that came through the windows was very strange, and the familiar business ③__________(make) very strange too. Then the sun came out, ④__________ light was flushing the snow with delicate pinks and had changed the dining-room window ⑤__________ a lovely Japanese print. The little plum tree outside, with the faintly flushed snow lining its branches and artfully ⑥__________(dispose) along its trunk, stood in full sunlight.
An hour or two later everything was a cold sparkle of white and blue. The world had completely changed again. The ground extended far, the sky was dim, and all the trees were so many black and threatening ⑦__________(shape). There was indeed something curiously disturbing about the whole prospect.
Now it has changed again. The snow is falling so ⑧__________(heavy) that you can hardly see across the shallow valley. The roofs are thick and the trees are all bending, and the weathercock of the village church, still ⑨__________(see) through the grey loaded air, has become some creature out of Hans Andersen. From my study, I can see the children ⑩__________(flatten) their noses against the window.
1.答案:innocent
2.答案:enhance
3.答案:bending
4.答案:rhyme
5.答案:church
1.early on 2.at the risk of 3.came out 4.broke out 5.talk away 6.woke up 7.is famous for 8.a number of
In the study last year... don't necessarily interact with one another"可知,去年一项分析了超过一百万条鲸鱼叫声录音的研究发现,音调变化现象遍及整个物种中,也存在于那些之间并没有必要沟通的种群中。故选A。
Perhaps whales don't need... by the absorption of carbon dioxide"可知,全球保护行动以及酸性海水是鲸鱼声调变化的两个原因。故选B。
四、答案:have had; an; was made; whose; into; disposed; shapes; heavily; to be seen; flattening
在句型"it is the first/ second/... that..."
change…into...
see sb. doing sth.
