Once upon a time, there was a very old man. There were two mountains near his house. They were so big and high that it took a long way to walk to the other side.

1. What happened next
(1)happened 是happen 的过去式,意思是“发生;碰巧”,属不及物动词。
如:It is impossible to anticipate when it will
happen. 不可能预料这事何时发生。

我昨天碰巧见到她。
sth. + happened + 地点/时间,表示某地/某时发生了某事 ,此时主语是物。
如:The story happened in 1912.
这个故事发生在1912年。
☆ sth. + happen + to sb. 表示“某人出了某事”,常指不好的事。

bit n. 有点;稍微
a little bit (= a little) + 形容词或副词或比较级时,表示“一点儿”。
