Once upon a time, there was a very old man. There were two mountains near his house. They were so big and high that it took a long way to walk to the other side.

1. What happened next
(1)happened 是happen 的过去式，意思是“发生；碰巧”，属不及物动词。
如：It is impossible to anticipate when it will
happen. 不可能预料这事何时发生。
I happened to see her yesterday.
我昨天碰巧见到她。
sth. + happened + 地点/时间，表示某地/某时发生了某事 ，此时主语是物。
如：The story happened in 1912.
这个故事发生在1912年。
☆ sth. + happen + to sb. 表示“某人出了某事”，常指不好的事。
如：What happened to you？
你发生什么事啦？
☆ sb. + happen + to do 表示某人碰巧做了某事。

bit n. 有点；稍微
a little bit (= a little) + 形容词或副词或比较级时，表示“一点儿”。
如： I’m a little bit tired. Let’s take a short
rest. 我有点累了，让我们休息一会。
She is a little bit shy. 她有点害羞。

instead of是介词短语，意为“代替；反而”，一般在句中，后可跟名词、代词或动名词。
