My wife and I were at a crowded grocery store not long ago.It was a weekday evening, cold and wet and tense.People were carelessly blocking aisles, complaining and cutting one another off with their carts.
Things got worse at the checkout line. The cashier scanned a man's discount card, but he misread the savings on her screen as an additional charge. He decided she was acting deliberately and began to argue.
“She is being spiteful (恶意的)!” he yelled.“This is unbelievable.”
Other customers looked away as the cashier tried to reason with him.She called a manager, who accompanied him to customer service.Shaken, she moved to the next customer in line.
We've all witnessed uncomfortable scenes like this in public places. The grocery scene was another example of how our trust in others has eroded. But it was also a teachable moment on how we can rebuild our faith—starting with just one person.
综合素养检测(二)
Back at the grocery store, my wife and I reached the uneasy cashier.I grabbed a bottle of water from a nearby cooler and handed it to her.“We felt bad about how that man treated you and wanted to buy this for you,” I said. Her face lit up, and we talked as she scanned our items. She told us she had been working that evening with severe foot pain and would be having surgery later that week.We wished her well in her recovery, and she thanked us as we left.
Those are the balancing acts, the moments of responding to social and emotional pain with healing, which will add up to restore trust among people. You can start that pattern in someone else's life, even in a place as ordinary as the neighbourhood grocery store.

[全国百强名校“领军考试”2021高二联考]Engineers at Zhejiang University have created China's first brain like computer, named Darwin Mouse, which can copy the way in which a human brain works and solve complex calculations while using a small amount of the energy used by traditional supercomputers.
Though the technology is still in its early stages, experts say it could be used to run large, real time simulations (模拟) and make new discoveries in chemistry, medicine and neuroscience. It could also be used to revolutionise computer design, leading to more powerful and efficient artificial intelligence.
Pan Gang, a professor at the university's College of Computer Science and Technology, said neuromorphic (神经形态) computing has been a focus of the international scientific and engineering communities for some time and is considered one of the key methods to overcome the major computing challenges for artificial intelligence. The Darwin Mouse represented a “major milestone achievement” in China's brain like computing technology.
综合素养检测(二)
In late 2018, the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, upgraded its neuromorphic supercomputer SpiNNaker to host a million processors, enabling it to perform two trillion actions a second. This allowed the machine to run extremely large scale real time simulations, such as modelling parts of the brain. The Darwin Mouse uses significantly fewer processors thanks to the latest developments in brain like chips made in China, allowing it to perform far better.
Another advantage is low energy costs. When information is transmitted, only neurons that receive and process the signals are activated, while other neurons stay asleep, similar to how a brain works. As a result, the energy consumption can be reduced to a small part of that of conventional supercomputers.
“We hope to keep evolving the Darwin series neuromorphic computer towards reaching human levels of intelligence, thus achieving more powerful artificial intelligence with significantly less energy use.It is hopeful that brain like computers will make their way into our daily lives as the hardware and software for the technology mature,” Pan said.

8.Which can be inferred about Darwin Mouse
A.Brain like and easy to operate.

[湖北部分高中联考协作体2021高二期中联考]For sports fans, there's nothing better than watching a live event on TV or at a sports venue (场地).But there's nothing worse than that event being called off because of bad weather.Bad light, a waterlogged pitch (场地) or excessive heat can cause matches to be postponed. But according to the latest research, extreme weather might be disrupting (打乱) the sporting calendar more than ever in the future.
In one sport, golf, major tournaments like The Open, are already predicted to be victims of our changing climate. In the UK, an organisation called The Climate Coalition says that golf courses such as St Andrews could be under water by the end of the century if sea levels rise even slightly. It told the BBC that its research predicts“cancelled football matches, flooded cricket grounds and golf courses crumbling into the sea”.
综合素养检测(二)
The threat to sporting fixtures (体育赛事) from climate change has been further highlighted in a new report, commissioned by the Rapid Transition Alliance.Writing about this for the BBC, Matt McGrath says that “By 2050, it's estimated that almost one in four English football league grounds can expect flooding every year.” This will mean fewer matches played, less opportunity to watch the beautiful game and reduced revenue (收入) from ticket sales.
Cricket also faces huge challenges globally as temperatures rise in places like India, Australia and the West Indies. The report says that stadiums in Adelaide and Perth will see a 60% increase in days with temperatures over 40°C over the next decade.
Of course, we know that the solution lies in reducing our carbon footprint. We could travel less to attend sports events, and reduce our waste when we do go.But this latest report finds that sports leaders are generally failing to address the issue seriously. However, because sport is universally popular and can be very influential, maybe it should be players, teams and their sponsors who promote a carbon neutral message to help protect sporting venues—before it's “game over”.

[重庆长寿中学2022高二月考]阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighbourhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was very unfriendly to them.
One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to have them fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realised he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali's running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.

Ali heard about a long distance race that would be held for the boys in the city. When he learnt that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win the new shoes.
The day of the race arrived. Ali had a good start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted, he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with him from behind. Ali fell to the ground.
