七、读后续写
13.(2023·河北唐山·统考一模)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Almost every childhood memory I have is centred on food. Telling stories around a crowded table at holiday dinners, the smell of roasting vegetables, the sensation (感受) of heat coming from the kitchen, all picture a familiar feeling of love and comfort.
My favourite memory of all is of my grandparents making and baking bread together. To this day, I have never tasted bread that is as delicious as theirs. No other loaf has ever been made with that kind of powerful, unconditional love.
When our son Brian, one of seventh graders, began to refuse usual communication with me, I felt desperate. How I missed those lovely old days when he couldn’t wait to tell me his stories in kindergarten the moment I arrived home without getting changed! And there were also times when he brought loads of storybooks to me and demanded to be told all the stories before going to bed. But I didn’t know since when everything changed. There was hardly any sharing about his daily school life with friends or any trouble about his schoolwork. Most of the time, his bedroom door was closed. The cold silence between us seemed to warn me that love between us began to fade.
At that time, like most mothers, I couldn’t focus on work and couldn’t sleep well. Why did things go off track so much Was it because my work took away most of my energy that family love was taken for granted Was it because my only precious spare time went too much to my two - year - old baby daughter that Brian’s need for my company was ignored The more I reflected, the more I felt myself to blame and it was my responsibility to find a way out.
One day, as my eyes landed onto the bread on the kitchen table, I was reminded of those sweet childhood memories, “Could food help us make a change ” I wondered.

Throughout life, we come across many people who impact us in a way. Their impact can be for a day or for a lifetime. It’s common not to recognize the impact someone has left on you until a certain moment. The person who left a great impact on me is my dad.
Three months after turning fourteen, my life was great. I was getting settled into a high school; my grades were already starting off greatly and I was making friends.
One day as I came home from school, I walked into the living room, finding my mom and dad talking. My parents turned to me and told me to sit down because there was something important they had to tell me. I soon found out that my dad’s liver was failing and he needed an immediate transplant. I was shocked and confused because my dad seemed fine. He was working and never looked sick. My parents told me not to worry because everything would be fine. Four months had passed and my dad still had not received a new liver ; he was progressively getting worse. His body seemed to be getting weaker, but he constantly said he was fine.
It was getting hard for my family and me. My dad had to quit his job leaving my mom to be the only provider. I had to take on the responsibility of cleaning the house, cooking meals and checking on my dad while my mom was at work. I had to cut back on hanging with my friends because my dad was beginning to go in and out of the hospital. My focus for school was starting to slip. So were my grades. Two nights before my school spring break, my mom received a call from the hospital that my dad had been in a car accident and that he was in hospital. Surprisingly, my dad hadn’t received a scratch on him. Then next night my mom received a call from the doctor stating that there was a liver that matched my dad’s body and that he needed to get to the hospital immediately.

Apollo was born in Burkina Faso, a country in Africa. It actually means “The Land of Honest People”. He has always valued the virtue of honesty and he brought it with him when he opened a restaurant in the United Kingdom three years ago. He believes that there are honest people everywhere.
On a regular weekend, customers were pouring in by the thousands, and service was going smoothly. Midway through that busy weekend, three guys entered through the restaurant’s doors evidently looking for a seat and some food. It’s possible that they arrived from out of town. There was a difference in their accents at the very least.
“Can we be served quickly We have to catch the train,” said one of them to a waiter.
It didn’t take long for them to be served by the waiter. They enjoyed every bite. After the quick but delightful meal, the three friends were ready to pay the bill for their supper. The entire cost of the food was 35. As the waiter approached their table, they gave their credit cards over. They were caught by surprise, however, when the server told them they could only pay in cash. After that, the waiter moved to another table to take orders.
When the waiter came back to collect their cash payment again, he found the three guys had gone missing without paying for their food. As a result, the waiter had no choice but to call Apollo, who was on holiday with his family.

The Freshest Bakery was in a small town called Balminster. It made bread for supermarkets in a nearby city. The bakery had been there for a long time and most of the machines were old. The factory engineer, Frank, was good at maintaining (维修) the machines and most of the time there were no problems.
One Tuesday, Frank was finishing work. The manager came out of his office.
“You have a day off tomorrow,” he said to Frank.
“Yes!” smiled Frank. “My son is graduating from university! Tomorrow I will go to the graduation ceremony!” He planned to leave at 6 am and had enough time to drive there.
At 4:30 am the next morning, Frank got a phone call from the factory, asking him to repair the broken oven at once.
Oh no! thought Frank. He hoped he could fix it quickly. He took his suit to the factory, so he could drive from there to the university.
When he arrived at the factory, all the workers and the manager were waiting for him. “Thank you, Frank,” said the manager. “I know this is a big day for you, but we must bake the bread.”
Frank went to look at the big bread oven. Then he went back to the manager. “I can fix it, but it will take a long time. I will be too late for the graduation ceremony.”
The manager felt very bad. But Frank knew they had to make bread and get it to the supermarkets today, or the supermarkets would turn to a newer bakery. All the workers would lose their jobs.
Frank worked hard to fix the bread oven. At 7:00 am he finished, and the loaves of bread started rolling into the oven to be baked.
“We will be on time for our supermarket deliveries!” The manager was very happy. “You can go now,” he said to Frank. “Enjoy your son’s graduation.”
“It’s too late,” said Frank sadly. “I cannot drive there in time.”

I had always prided myself on my sharp tongue and brilliant response whether in class debates or casual arguments. Thus, when I was selected to represent the school in the national debate series, I was naturally extremely confident of myself.
All the members in my team were good speakers. We had an experienced teacher who trained us well. But I was undoubtedly the most outstanding speaker. In each of the rounds that I debated in, all the judges selected me as the best one. This meant that my confidence was the highest by the time we found ourselves with one week to train before the finals. I had every reason to believe that I would be voted the best speaker for the debate series.
I began to be self-important about the whole business and started behaving that way with my team-mates. I would laugh at Eton’s poor debating style. I would complain of Vivian’s slow response. I saw myself as the natural debater who would be disappointed by their bad performance.
As the finals drew near, I became more and more dissatisfied with my team. I began missing practices. My teacher was worried. My teammates were panicked. However, they had no choice but to rely on me to win the finals. Even if they would love to remove me from the team they could not because there was no replacement good enough.
The day of the finals finally came. I was very excited that I was able to finally show off my debating skills. Everyone was expecting my performance. They knew that I was praised to be the one most likely to win the best speaker for the debate series.

Having held the interschool storytelling championship for the past two years, I was the shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.
Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly emerge as the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited. I was so proud that I neglected the importance of practicing for the contest.
A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse for the contest ” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage in the presence of the audience,” she added.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.”
This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script. I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine.
The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was packed. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.
Paragraph 1:
Soon, it was my turn to talk.

“You guys will do great. I love you.”
I looked up at my mom, and she smiled at me. But I didn’t want to get out of the car. The car door opened, and my sister jumped out. I knew I was supposed to follow her, but I was stuck in my seat. My sister was running towards the school and looked back quickly, keeping going. I kept looking at the door, hoping she would come back out and get me. She didn't come back.
My mom had told me that my sister would show me where to go. The day before, I had pictured it all in my head. I would follow her into school, and she would show me where to go. Following her would be easy, and I wouldn’t be scared at all. Now how am I supposed to know what to do
“I have to get to work. You're going to be okay,” my mom told me as she looked towards the school. 1 followed her eyes and saw more kids than I had ever seen before. I jumped out of the car, closed the door behind me and took one last look at my mom.
There was no turning back now.
I started walking into my new school. The doors were too tall and heavy for me. Not knowing where to go, I headed to the only place that I knew in this new, unfamiliar school.
I walked nervously into my teacher's classroom. It was familiar to me since I was here a few short weeks ago for kindergarten orientation (迎新介绍). 1 could hear my heartbeat in my ears. As I looked around, there were no other kids in the classroom. Maybe I went to the wrong class or it wasn’t the first day of school. I wanted to go home. 1 looked around the room. There was a wall of shelves filled with toys and board games.
Paragraph 1
“Hi! Before eight o'clock, you can wait in the cafeteria or here if you want.” came a familiar voice.

There are a number of volunteer organizations out there that deal in things like clothing donation and the sale of remaining books. Retired schoolteacher Cathy McAllister has been a member of such an organization, VNSA, since 2012.Her duties in this regard involve working throughout the year to help prepare the books for their February sale and acting as personnel chair for the sale itself. This means that she helps coordinate(协调)all the other volunteers that help out before, during, and after the event.
It was before the 2019 book sale and Cathy once again found herself sitting among a towering pile of books and sorting through them to ensure that they would be in go0d enough condition to resell. As she was sorting, she came upon a book. The slightly broken book was in fair condition but it was one of four copies she had already found, and she a saved three of those already. The others had been much more gently used as well. Though she didn't like doing it, she had done this long enough to know that the only remaining choice was to throw it into the pile for repurposing.
A greedy book lover herself, Cathy felt guilty about throwing away a perfectly good book. Before she threw it away, she decided to check for more serious damage inside that might justify her giving it up. She opened the cover and moved to fan through the pages when she noticed something unusual.
When she opened the cover, Cathy was surprised to see that a part had been hollowed out inside the book. It looked as though someone had taken an X-Acto knife and rather expertly hollowed out a significant space. What's more, the book's previous owner had chosen to hide something in that space. She looked down and saw that someone had hidden four packages in the space, each containing ten$100 bills. Cathy's first thought was that the bills were toy money that perhaps a kid had hidden inside as part of some childish game or something.

It's quite impressive to see Canada geese flying into the clouds. They live to be around 25 years old and are very loyal. They never forget their first home. No one knows this more than my family.
In 2000, when I was seven, my parents and I came back from a T-ball game one late spring afternoon. To our surprise, two adult geese and a baby goose were in our driveway (车库前的私 人车道).The adults were shocked by us and flew away, but their baby was too young to fly and couldn't follow. We are no strangers to the ways of wildlife, so we knew to avoid contact with the baby, hoping he could join his parents.
Hours passed, and night fell. The tiny little thing was wandering around our yard, unaware of what could happen. It was clear that the baby needed protection, warmth, and food to make it to the morning, so we brought him onto our back porch (门廊)and set up a wire fence to enclose and protect him.
We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning. And then another morning. And another. Each day, we tried eagerly to get the baby back to his parents, who kept coming to our yard. He wouldn't go to them, though, and they wouldn't come close enough to claim him. The baby goose had clearly decided we were his new family and we gave him a name - Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping (唧唧叫)noise, nonstop.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, until almost a year passed. Peeper slept on our back porch in typical goose fashion. Every day, my dad would clear his droppings with water and throw him up into the air, so he could fly a loop around the house, coming back again once the porch was clean.
Paragraph 1:
One evening, my uncle was over, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper's loop.

1.Dear Tom,
I’m pleased to know you intend to learn to cook Chinese cuisine during your gap year. I think fried rice is your best choice.
Fried rice is eaten as a main dish. It is flavorful and is easy to learn. Fried rice is made from rice with many other ingredients that you can choose to suit your preferences, such as pork, beef chicken, egg, or vegetables. It is a fast meal because it not only cooks quickly, but also requires a minimal amount of preparation.
I hope my recommendation will be helpful. May you have a good time learning it.
