After 22 years of marriage,I have discovered the secret to keep love alive in my relationship with my wife, Peggy: I started dating with another woman. It was Peggy's idea, actually, “you know you love her,” she said one day, taking me in surprise. The “other woman” my wife was encouraging me to date is my mother, a 72-year-old woman who has lived alone since my father died 20 years ago. Right after his death, I moved 2500 miles away to another city and started my own family and work. When I moved back near my hometown six years ago, I promised myself that I would spend more time with Mom. But with the demands of my job and three kids, I never saw her much, only at family get-togethers and holidays.
She was surprised and doubtful when I called and suggested the two of us go to dinner and a movie. “What’s wrong ” she asked. My mother thinks anything out of the ordinary signals bad news. “I thought it would be nice to spend some time with you,” I said. “Just the two of us.” “I’d like that a lot.” she replied.
On the way to her home, I was actually a little bit worried! What would we talk about What if she didn’t like the restaurant I chose
When I arrived at her house, she was waiting by the door with her coat on. Her hair was curled, and she was smiling. “I told my lady friends I was going out with my son, and they were all admirable,” she said as she got into my car. “They can’t wait to hear about our evening.”
We picked a neighborhood place for our dinner. When we got to the restaurant, my mother held my arm, half out of love and half to help her travel across the restaurant steps successfully. Since her eyes now only see large shapes and shadows, I had to read the menu for both of us.
Mom looked at me, a thoughtful smile on her lips.

The Ministry of Education issued a notice on Nov. 22, 2019. According to the regulation, primary and middle school teachers are allowed to criticize and give proper punishment to students who violate school discipline, social order, laws and rules, as well as those who cause chaos Should teachers be allowed to discipline students Students share their opinions
Su hua Teachers should be cautious in disciplining students. They can punish a student without violence but hurt the child psychologically for the rest of his life. My daughter's teacher makes students who forget to bring homework stand for an hour at their seats. i do believe the aim is to cause the student to feel ashamed and it is not acceptable.
Li Jiang It is parents' responsibility to discipline the students, not teachers, because the teachers are not paid to discipline children, but to guide their learning. If necessary, teachers should manage the situation in a way that is effective, but does not replace the parent
Zhang Ming I think teachers should be allowed to discipline children in class to maintain an environment beneficial for learning. Here the word"discipline"does not mean"punish". Teachers discipline children to lead them into what is believed to be correct thinking and action, rather than punish them

On a winter Sunday good for skiing, Sue arrived at their holiday chalet (棚屋) with joy. Sue’s skis were sticking out behind her. Mark, another skier, tripped over Sue’s skis. Before Sue could apologize, Mike shouted, “Your skis are in the way. You’ve got big smelly feet!” In view of his attitude, Sue ignored him. Mark lost face and was more angry.
The ski lift took all the skiers to the top of the mountain. The hard snow of the piste (滑雪道) was below them. Then Sue skied down the mountain. As a good skier, she didn’t fall over. Mark, along with his good friend David, was watching her with envy and anger. They were also good skiers but they didn’t know Sue very well. “She’s good,” David said. “But we’re better,” Mark responded with dissatisfaction.
The young people skied all day. They enjoyed themselves and forgot everything. On Wednesday morning, the young people were waiting for the ski lift when their teacher announced a ski race. The race would be arranged for the last day of the holiday on a long and difficult ten-kilometer piste. Everybody wanted to win! They went up the mountain, put on their skis and skied down the piste, practicing for the race. Sue skied fast, so did Mark and David. Obviously, these three became powerful opponents.
It was Saturday and the race was going to be held in the afternoon. Sue was hungry and left her skis at the side of a café. She sat down and ordered lunch. Later, David and Mark came in. They also headed to the side to put their skis there. Mark noticed Sue’s skis and aimed a kick angrily at them. Then he found a screw (螺丝) on Sue’s ski was loose, unsure whether it was caused by the force or it was like that originally. “Sue’s skis won’t work. We’re sure to win,” Mark said and pointed. They smiled knowingly at each other.

23.(2022·江苏苏州·校联考三模)阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
On Friday evening, Emmett and I went to a movie as scheduled. After purchasing the tickets and drinks, we entered the cinema with delight beforehand, waiting for the beginning of the movie.
When I got up in the middle of the movie, Emmett whispered, “Carter, where are you going ” “I forgot to call my mom to tell her what time to pick us up.” I whispered back, leaving my jacket on the seat.
I squeezed past the people in my row, trying not to step on any feet while still watching the screen. I didn’t want to miss a thing. Balfour, the good guy in the movie, was trapped in an underground cave.
When I came back, Balfour’s flashlight almost went out. An enormous snake was moving toward him, twisting its body. Balfour struggled to loosen the chains around his hands and feet to reach his magic cape. With the cape around him, he could completely disappear.
I crawled back across eight people (I counted on the way out), never taking my eyes off the screen. I sat down in my seat slowly, then picked up my drink, and swallowed it quickly. But suddenly my brain said, “That’s not coke. That’s lemonade.” I looked down at the cup, just as the girl next to me shouted, “He drank my lemonade!”
“ Shhhh!” the people around us said, making quiet complaints.
“ Where’s Emmett ” I asked, as if the girl had hidden him under her seat.
“ Carter, down here,” Emmett answered in a low voice. He was two rows ahead of me. I was in the wrong row! Everyone was turning around to look at me.
“ Here,” I said, handing the girl her drink.
“Eww,” she said. “You have had a drink of it, so you owe me a lemonade.”
“Shhhh!” everyone said again.
“OK, OK,” I said, starting my crawl across eight sets of feet again. Everybody were complaining as I inched out.
“Don’t come back,” the boy on the end said.

Saved by the Belt
My family is one of the lucky ones. We still have what we consider most precious — each other. It is Kathy Hezlep, our superstar, that has saved our family. Sitting at the porch, I am transported to the accident ten years ago.
As a mother, I have been blessed. I have a nice, smart, good-looking son who has given me much pleasure over the years. In the months leading up to Alan’s 16th birthday, there was a lot of excitement about his upcoming rite (仪式)of passage — the driver’s license.
About a month before his birthday, there was an assembly about seat-belt safety presented at his high school. One of the presenters in this program, Kathy Hezlep, had lost her son in a horrible car crash the year before. When Kathy was first asked to speak at this assembly, she was reluctant. Her son’s death had been extremely hard on her. She often felt helpless and discouraged, and she wasn’t sure how she could make a difference by speaking with this group.
But the school had convinced her to talk to the students. Kathy spoke about how hard it had been since the loss of her son. There were days when it was an effort just to get out of bed. She spoke directly from her heart and my son took her words straight into his heart. I remember Alan coming home that day and the two of us talking about the crash. We thought it was interesting that she was a single mother(like me)and that her son, Ryan, was her only child(like Alan).
Well, the big day finally arrived. The state of Florida, in its infinite wisdom, granted my “ child ” a license to take a loaded weapon and drive it! At the time, I thought the worst feeling I could possibly experience was watching my only child drive off alone in my car. I was wrong.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150词左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Alan had his license one week when the police called me that Alan had an accident with his friends.

“Mommy, don’t go,” my three year old son screamed as I walked to the door. My fifteen year old leaned against the kitchen counter with his arms folded across his chest, not screaming, but glaring at me as I pulled his little brother off my legs.
“Are you mad at me too ”
“You spend all your time taking care of other people’s kids, but what about us ” Dylan left angrily.
I was shocked and a little hurt. How could my own child not understand that the work I was doing was saving lives Then the answer hit me. He didn’t know, because he had never seen what Healing the Children actually did. Dylan had heard the stories of sick children, but had never once looked into the eyes of a child and understood the hard truth—that without our help, the children would likely die.
“Get dressed. You are going with me,” I said.
I spent the drive explaining the case of Hector to my son, who pretended to ignore me the entire time. “He’s seven, only weighs thirty pounds and is very sick. He has a heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, which could kill him. It is a miracle (奇迹) that he is still alive.”
I went on to explain that it took a team of volunteer medical staff to get Hector to the hospital from his remote village and care for him while he was there. Still, Dylan seemed unimpressed.
We stopped at a convenience store for water and snacks. Dylan had one large and one small Slurpee (思乐冰饮料). He said the small one was for Hector. I doubted whether the little guy would be able to drink it, but remained silent. This was the first interest Dylan had shown in being there. I wasn’t about to ruin it.
I stopped at the nurses’ station to check on Hector’s progress while Dylan went to his room. Our patient was recovering physically, but the nurse was concerned that Hector was struggling emotionally. She said, “Kids usually bounce back fast, but he hardly speaks and never smiles.”

2.请按如下格式作答。
Imagine my surprise when I heard laughter from Hector’s room

Snowflakes dancing in the sky, it was an awfully cold winter. Mary felt as gray as the sky outside. She struggled to get by the tough winter because her bills went up while her income went down.
Her refrigerator sat empty. Her only food consisted of peanut butter, bread and bananas, only enough for two sandwiches. Worse still, it would be four days before she got paid. As Mary prepared to sit down and eat half of her remaining food, she heard a knock at the door. Who could it be on such a freezing night Robbery scenes from films flashed across her mind. Then Mary shook her head and laughed at her foolish thought-no robber would choose her as a target. Opening the door, she saw a stranger standing outside, body trembling with cold.
“Madam, sorry to disturb you, but I'm lost and get stuck in the snow. Could you please spare a piece of bread " the stranger asked cautiously and politely in a weak but deep voice.
“I'm afraid not,” said Mary, “but I could make you a peanut butter and banana sandwich.”
“That sounds wonderful,” the stranger answered. "Mind if I wait here on the porch ”
“Yes, I do mind,” Mary replied, "but you could come in and eat it at the table.”
Not expecting both food and warmth, the stranger entered the house eagerly. Mary hurried off to the kitchen for the last four pieces of bread, peanut butter, and bananas. In a few minutes, she returned and invited him to sit down to eat what she could offer. After eating, the man thanked and said goodbye to her.
Looking outside, Mary hesitated a moment and said, "If you don't mind, you can sleep on the sofa.” "That would be good enough," responded the man gratefully.
Mary went into her room, and locked the door. The next morning, when she woke up, she remembered the man. "How will I tell him I have nothing for breakfast " she asked herself. She dressed, unlocked, and opened the door slightly.

My mother was a supporter of physical punishment, but for all her talking she has never spanked (打屁股) my siblings(兄弟姐妹) and me only once. Instead she found ways of punishment that left a more lasting memory than giving us a spanking. One of the most memorable of these occasions occurred when I was four.
In the early 70’s my mother attended college during the day and I was in daycare. One day at daycare I watched an extremely tired mother attempt to pick up her daughter. The little girl asked, “Momma, are we going to McDonald’s for dinner ” The mother replied, “Honey, not tonight. Momma has to run a few errands (差事) and then we have to go home and cook dinner for Daddy.” “But I wanna go.” “Susie, I said not tonight. Maybe, if you are a good girl, we can go tomorrow.” Susie immediately dropped to the floor, kicking and screaming, “I want to go to McDonald’s.”
No amount of pleading (恳求)or scolding her mother tried stopped Susie’s tantrum (发脾气). Finally, her mother gave in, “Okay, Susie, let’s go to McDonald’s.” Susie stopped yelling and smiling she grabbed her mother’s hand and they left. To say I was amazed would be inaccurate; I was delighted that anything I wanted could be had by throwing a tantrum.
That day my mother picked me up early from daycare because we were going to a store to purchase some Christmas items. I was excited by the lights and decorations, and as we walked through the toy section on the way to the counter, I saw a toy I had to have. It was a white and red telephone whose bells rang as it was pulled along on a string. Looking lovingly up at my mother I asked, “Mama, can I have that telephone ”
She replied, “Baby, not now, but if you are a good girl, maybe Santa will bring it to you.” “But Mama, I want that telephone right now.” Her eyes narrowed and her hand tightened on mine. “Becky, you can’t have that telephone today, but if you misbehave, you can have a spanking.”

A boy named Ali had a large and harmonious family, happily living with his sisters, parents and grandmother. His grandmother loved everyone a lot and was respected by all family members. she was very old, yet sometimes she would recall things from her past and share with them. Sometimes they would believe her but at other times they would think that Granny might be mixing up the facts due to her old age.
One day, when Ali was in school, suddenly while knitting (编织),Granny remembered something and she couldn't contain her emotions so she got up to tell her son-Ali's father She walked as fast as she could to his room and said, “You always asked about my birth date but do you know today is the day when I was born.”
She looked at her son with an excited expression, expecting an immediate response. However, her son wondered how she could remember her date of birth in this old age when she forgot so many other things, so he didn't pay much attention to this. Disappointed at her son's reaction, Granny then went to Ali's mother and Ali's sister, but like Ali's father, nobody believed her.
Disheartened, she went and sat in the terrace (庭院).When Ali returned from his school, he found his grandmother sitting alone with a sad expression. Ali asked his granny about the matter, but she said there was nothing to worry about. After a lot of persuasion she revealed what was troubling her-nobody seemed to care that it was her birthday today!

Wonderful Christmas Gift
Ann and her mother had lived in a small unattractive cottage as long as Ann could remember.
Christmas was so close, and so was her birthday. Ann wished she could get a new dress as a Christmas gift. All her friends would be getting new dresses. But Ann did not want to ask her Mom for a new dress. She knew how hard her mom worked to make both ends meet. Maybe she could make a wish — maybe Santa Claus would come. Ann couldn’t help dreaming about the new dress even though she knew that Santa Claus was just an imaginary character. Her classmates were talking only of Christmas celebrations which were nearing. “My rich aunt is surely going to give me a pretty branded doll again,” said Ria. “I have been hinting about that costly watch to my parents. They are bound to gift that to me”, told Tessi. Ann felt left out in those conversations. She neither had rich parents nor rich aunt or uncle to give her expensive gifts. It was not just gift that worried Ann. It was her mother. Nowadays she was working overtime and looked pale and worn out.
The days passed and soon it was Christmas Eve. In everyone’s, except Ann’s house, a Christmas tree decorated the living room. Every child went to bed eagerly waiting for the lovely gifts that he or she would receive the next day. Ann went to bed with a heavy heart. She knew that there would be no gifts for her. Ann wished with her whole heart that at least this time she would get a gift from Santa Claus. Ann slowly drifted off to sleep. She dreamt of Santa riding in the snow on his reindeers (驯鹿).

I was still a thief when I met Anil. And though only 15, I was an experienced and fairly successful hand.
Anil was about 25—a tall, thin fellow—and he looked easy-going, kind and simple enough for my purpose. I might be able to get into his confidence.
I gave him my most appealing smile. “I want to work for you.” I said.
“But I can't pay you.”
Perhaps I had misjudged the man. I asked, “Can you feed me ”
“Can you cook ”
“I can cook.” I lied.
“If you can cook, then I can feed you.”
The meal I cooked that night must have been terrible because Anil gave it to a stray dog and old me to be off. But I just hung around smiling in my most appealing way, and he couldn't help laughing.
Later he patted me on the head and said never mind, he'd teach me to cook. He also taught me to write my name and said he would soon teach me to write whole sentences and to add numbers. I was grateful. I knew that once I could write like an educated man there would be no limit to what I could achieve.
One evening he came home with a small bundle of notes, saying he had just sold a book to a publisher. At night, I saw him put the money under the mattress (床垫).
It's time I did some real work, I told myself. After all, he doesn't even pay me.
Anil was asleep. I crept up to the bed. Anil was sleeping peacefully. My hand slid under the mattress, searching for the notes. When I found them, I drew them out without a sound. Anil sighed in his sleep and turned on his side, towards me. I was frightened and quickly crawled out of the room.
I began to run, holding the notes by the string of my pajamas (睡衣). But I slowed down and sat down in the shelter of the clock tower. I should go back to Anil, I told myself, if only to learn to read and write.

It was Christmas Day. Pappy was working alone fixing an old lantern in the backroom when he heard the ringing of his bell on the shop door. The bell, which produced a uniquely pleasant sound, had been in Pappy’s family for over a hundred years. He valued it dearly and enjoyed sharing its song with all who came to his shop. Although the bell hung on the inside of the main door, Pappy had tied a wire to the screen door so that it would ring whether the inner door was open or not. Hearing the bell, he left the backroom to greet his customer.
“And how can I help you, little lady ” Pappy’s voice was joyful.
“Hello, sir.” The little girl spoke almost in a whisper. She looked at Pappy with her big brown eyes, and then slowly scanned the room in search of something special. Shyly she told him, “I’d like to buy a present, sir.”
“Well, let’s see,” Pappy said, “who is this present for ”
“My grandpa. It’s for my grandpa. But I don’t know what to get.”
Pappy began to make suggestions. “How about a pocket watch It’s in good condition.” The little girl didn’t answer. She had walked to the doorway and put her small hand on the door. She shook the door gently to ring the bell. Pappy’s face seemed to glow as he saw her smiling with excitement.
“This is just right,” the little girl said. “Momma says grandpa loves music.”
Just then, Pappy’s expression changed. Fearful of breaking the little girl’s heart, he told her, “I’m sorry, Missy. That’s not for sale. Maybe your grandpa would like this little radio.”
The girl looked at the radio, bowed her head, and sadly sighed, “No, I don’t think so.”
In an effort to help her understand, Pappy told her that the bell had been his only companion, for the rest of his family were all gone now, except for his estranged (疏远的) daughter whom he had not seen for nearly a decade.

A boy on in-line skates zoomed around the corner and crashed into me before I jumped out of the way. We fell into a sprawling(摊开四肢躺着) heap as the box I’d been carrying flew from my hands and landed in the street with a sickening beat. A moment later, a car whizzed past, sending the box spinning in circles.
The skater got up, mumbled sorry, and sped off around the corner.
“Are you OK, Emily ” Aiden asked.
“I think so.” My arm had slapped the sidewalk hard. I stood and slowly moved it in circles.
“Oh no! Look at Mom’s present!” Aiden’s face was red.
I picked up the crushed box and opened it. The drinking glasses inside were broken. I closed the box and left it in a garbage can on the sidewalk, then started hurrying toward home. Aiden had to run at full speed to keep up with me.
When we got to the apartment, we threw ourselves down on chairs in the kitchen.
“It isn’t fair! Why did that happen ” Aiden said.
“I didn’t even see that guy! He came out of nowhere,” I said angrily.
Aiden’s lower lip trembled. “Mom would’ve loved these glasses.”
We’d saved our money for weeks to buy glasses with pink flowers on them for Mother’s Day. We have other glasses, but not a full set that matches. I wished I could hang something against the wall and scream, but I knew I couldn’t. I’m the older one. I had to hold it together.
“I wanted to make her happy,” Aiden said.
I thought about how Mom had been before the divorce. She used to joke around and laugh a lot. Now she had a deep worry line between her eyes and hardly ever smiled.
“We’ll think of something else to give her for Mother’s Day,” I said, trying to cheer up Aiden.

This particular day began at seven in the morning in Casablanca(卡萨布兰卡). My friend Mike and I were going to visit Abdel, a young man we’d worked with on a volunteer project in Kenitra, an industrial city on the Moroccan(摩洛哥) coast. He’d been expecting us to arrive in Casablanca for a few days now, and since he had no telephone, he’d written down his address and name and told us to just show up-his mother and Sisters were always at home.
Apparently the address he had written down was hard for foreigners like us to understand. When we got into the neighborhood, our taxi driver started asking directions. Eventually, with the help of a policeman, we were led to a house down a winding road. Our driver went to the door and inquired. He came back saying Abdel’s sister was in this house visiting friends and would come along to show us where they lived.
Soon a girl of about sixteen emerged from the house. Surprisingly, she didn’t look like Abdel at all. Still I’d seen other families where children didn’t look alike, so I didn’t give it too much thought. She then brought us to a yard. We waited in the yard while the sister went in and returned accompanied by her mother, sisters and brother-in-law, all of whom greeted us with cautious warmth. We were shown into the living room. The mother told us in broken French that Abdel was out, but would be home soon. We sat on low, cushioned seats, drinking sweet mint tea and eating sugar cookies, while the family members sat with us and made shy, polite conversation that frequently fell into uncomfortable silence.
An hour passed, more family members emerged from inner rooms. I was again struck by the fact that none of them looked a thing like our friend.
After another two hours had passed with no sign of Abdel, the family insisted on serving us a meal in their kitchen next door. “Soon,” was the only response I got when I inquired as to what time Abdel might come back.

The great advice on making friends
Jonah would never forget how he managed to overcome his shyness and make new friends all because of the timely advice he had followed a month ago. He remembered that day clearly.
The bell for the break resounded through the corridors at Glendale School. Instead of heading to the canteen like the other children did, Jonah fled to the library. He pushed open the door and headed for the nearest bookshelf. Other than the noise of the air-conditioner, the library was quiet and there was barely a soul in sight. Far in a corner, he spotted the librarian, who seemed too busy shelving some books to pay any attention to him. The windows to the library looked out to the canteen. Jonah could hear children laughing and chatting. He wished he was outside playing with some friends but he did not let this bother him.
Suddenly, Jonah heard a sound in the corner. He turned around and saw the librarian walking towards him. “Hi, I’m Mrs Lim.” she greeted him with a smile.
“Um...hi, I’m Jonah,” Jonah said, his face flushed red with embarrassment.
“Why are you reading here when you could be playing with your friends instead ”
“Uh...” Jonah looked around the library, avoiding her gaze. He did not want Mrs Lim to know the real reason why he was in the library. She had the same look in her eyes as Jonah’s father during the quiet car rides home from school. Jonah was helplessly tight-lipped whenever his father asked whom he had played or eaten with at school. From his silence, Jonah’s father knew he was lonely. It was not that Jonah did not have any friends. They all just happened to live really far away. Jonah would stay up late at night chatting on the computer with his old friends from his previous school. Somehow, it made him feel close to them despite the distance. Transferred to this new school, Jonah found it difficult to make new friends. Everyone seemed to have different interests and their own circle of friends.

I remember the day Dad gathered my mother and me in the living room and opened the case as if it were a treasure chest. “Here it is,” he said. “Once you learn to play, it’ll stay with you for life.” I gave him a thin smile, because I had hoped for a guitar or a piano. An accordion (手风琴) was nowhere in my favorite list. As I looked at the shiny white keys and cream-colored bellows, I could already hear my friends’ teasing laughter.
For the next two weeks, the accordion was stored in the hall closet. Then one evening Dad announced that I would start lessons that following week. In disbelief I shot my eyes toward Mom for support. The firm set of her jaw told me I was out of luck. Spending $ 300 for an accordion and $ 5 per lesson was out of character for my father. He was always frugal (节俭的).
Shortly after, my lessons began with Mr. Zelli at the Allegro According School. On my first day, I felt clumsy in every way. “How did he do ” my father asked when it was over. “Fine for the first lesson,” said Mr. Zelli.
I was ordered to practice for half an hour every day. Gradually, to my surprise, I was able to string notes together and coordinate my fingers to play simple songs. Often after supper, my father would request a tune or two. As he sat in his easy chair, I would fumble (笨手笨脚地做) through “Lady of Spain” and “Beer Barrel Polka”.
Throughout the summer, Mr. Zelli’s lessons grew more difficult. It took me a week and a half to master them now. All the while I could hear my buddies outside playing heated games of stickball. I’d also hear occasional laughter. Such laughter paled, though, beside the upcoming concert, I would have to play a solo (独奏) on a local movie theater’s stage. But I wanted to skip the whole thing.
