After her car ran out of gas on a dark New Jersey highway last month, Kate Mcclure pulled over and tried to walk to the nearest gas station on foot. But a nearby homeless man didn't let her go far, telling her to go back in the car and lock the doors while he went instead. Mcclure said the man, Johnny spent his last s20 on a can of gas for her.
While she didn't have cash to give him at the time, she and her boyfriend retumed to Johnny's spot along the side of the road the next day to retum the money. Over the following weeks, she kept stopping by to chat with Johnny and give him a few dollars. Finally she decided to set up a Gofundme page for him earlier this month, intending to raise S10, 000."I wish that I could do more for this selfless man, who went out of his way just to help me that day, "Meclure wrote on the page. "He is such a great guy, and talking to him each time I see him makes me want to help him more and more.”
To date, the campaign has raised over S 300, 000- outstripping its goal. Many of the 10, 400 donors contributed s10 or S20. Mcclure originally intended to use the funds to set Johnny up in his own apartment with some necessities and enough money to last him a few months while he looked for employment.
As support kept pouring in, Mcclure briefly stopped the campaign earler this week on the request of Johnny, who didn't want to take advantage of the kindness of strangers. She restarted it, however, by popular demand.
Faced with a huge surplus of the funding, Mcclure said, “Johnny has more than a few ideas of where this money can go and how it will be used for meaningful purposes.” “It will be his decision and his decision only on what organizations or pnvate parties he decides to help!"she wrote.

Oct.5 ith was International White Cane Safety Day. You may have never heard of it, but it was a day to remember for Peng Baier, 17, of Nanjing Foreign Language School. After school that day he visited his local Disabled Persons’ Federation(残疾人联合会). He wanted to know about the sales and feedback of his newly published book, How to Help a Disabled Person.
Since he lives with his dial abled grandparents, he understands that life can be hard for this group of people. Peng decided to write the book because he wanted to create a better life for disabled people in China.
“Crossing the street is a big problem for them,”Peng said. "Speeding cars, people walking in a hurry bikes on the sidewalk for the blind-accidents can happen everywhere. Thats why we hardly ever see disabled people on the street, even though there are millions of disabled people in China.”
Peng's book with pictures is easy to understand. It is a guide to the right and wrong ways to treat disabled people. The left-hand pages show the reader the right way; the right-hand pages point out mistakes that are commonly made.
The teenager had 2, 000 copies of his book printed. With the help of the Disabled Persons Federation, he gave them to the disabled community.
“The book is bilingual, so foreigners can also use it.” said Perg
Peng put great effort into the book. For example he interviewed many disabled people to get first-hand materials. He also studied textbooks from different schools for the disabled. Peng finally completed his handbook, but he still had the problem of getting it printed.
How does a high school student raise money needed for that

“You can use me as a last resort(选择), and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it.” This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a reques for volunteers for my kids’ lacrosse(长曲棍球)club.
I guess that there’s probably some demanding work schedule or soclal anxiety around stepping up to help for an unknown sport. She may just need a little persuading. So I try again and tug at the heartstrings. I mention the sip le parent with four kids running the show and I talk about the dad coaching a team that his kids arent even on...at this point the unwilling parent speaks up, "Alright. Yes, I'll do it.”
I'm secretly relieved because I know theres real power in sharing volunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling Parent organizes the meal schedule sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts. Somewhere along the way, the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season. Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal.
Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comes to a close. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more: Connecting to the e communeiy(社区) as you freely give your time, money, skills, or services provides a real joy. Volunteering just feels so good.
In that sense, 'm pretty sure volunteering is more of a selfish act than I'd freely like to admit. However, if others benefit in the te process, and I get some reward too, does it really matter where my motivation lies
1. What can we infer about the parent from her reply in paragraphh1
A. She knows little about the club
B. She isnt good at sports
C. She just doesn't want to volunteer
D. She's unable to meet her schedule.
2. What does the underlined phrase " tug at the heartstrings in paragraph 2 mean
A Encourage teamwork
B. Appeal to feelings
C. Promote good deeds.
D. Provide advice.
3. What can we learn about the parent from paragraph 3
A. She gets interested in lacrosse
B. She is proud of her kids
C. Shell work for another season.
D. She becomes a good helper
4. Why does the author like doing volunteer work
A. It gives her a sense of duty,
B. It makes her very happy
C. It enables her to work hard
D. It brings her material rewards
