第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
You can’t just rely on textbooks to learn English, if you want to learn a foreign language well. Actually, you need an excellent language environment. This does not mean that you have to move abroad or live with foreigners. It is also a good way to read the original books, and the best and most reliable ones are the classics. Here are four famous books. Let’s see which one you are most interested in.
Ulysses
Ulysses did “stream of consciousness” before the term existed, and it’s also a complicated (难懂的) novel filled with references, wordplay, confusing jokes, and intense, personal reflections by the characters.
Moby-Dick
Moby-Dick has a fame for being very dull. Melville’s novel wasn’t received well on publication (it took decades before people really started to realize how great it is), and the negative evaluation is repeated every year when students are forced to read it.
Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece in the literary world, being the inspiration, basis, and model for so many modern novels. You’re probably more familiar with its plot and characters than you think. For a book written in the early 19th century, its modernity is surprising only until you realize this is the novel that in many ways defines what a modern novel is.
The Big Sleep
It’s true that the book is written in what seems to modern audiences like a self-consciously tough style, peppered with old-fashioned expressions, and the plot is famously complicated, even for a mystery. It actually has several loose ends that never get solved, but it doesn’t matter.
21. Which book failed to be popular at first
A. Ulysses.
B. Moby-Dick.
C. Pride and Prejudice.
D. The Big Sleep.
22. What is special about Pride and Prejudice
A. It is full of puzzling jokes.
B. It is famous for its dullness.
C. It is a typical modern novel.
D. It has some mysterious ends.
23. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A textbook.
B. An English magazine.
C. A travel brochure.
D. A novel.

On May 7, 2022, Merle Liivand broke her own world record for swimming with a single fin. She swam the distance of a full marathon in the rough waters of Biscayne Bay, Florida. She even picked trash out of the water as she swam.
As a child, she had health problems and began swimming to help her lungs get stronger. She was soon taking part in open water swimming contests. In one training session, she nearly swallowed some plastic that was floating in the sea. It made her think of all the sea animals who faced similar pollution every day. She decided to work to make people more aware of plastic pollution.
Liivand first set the world record for swimming with monofin (单片脚蹼) in 2019, when she swam 6.2 miles. In 2020, she broke the record again by swimming 12.8 miles. In 2021, she set a new Guinness World Record by swimming 18.6 miles. Last year, Liivand broke the record once more by swimming the length of a full marathon. It took her 11 hours and 54 seconds to swim 26.2 miles.
The water was rough, and she ran up against a few problems, but she didn’t stop. “I got stung by jellyfish,” she said. “And I kept telling myself that it was not the time to cry.”
To keep her energy up, a friend followed her in a kayak (皮划艇) and gave her food and water from time to time. Along the way, Liivand picked up all the trash she found and put it in the kayak. By the end of her marathon, the kayak held three bags of trash. She said, “This isn’t just about a record. It’s about helping the community and the world. Set a dream and try your best to make it come true. I will persist (坚持) it forever.”
24. What made Liivand develop the idea of picking up trash while swimming
A. One of her swimming experiences.
B. The death of sea animals.
C. Her illness caused by pollution.
D. The encouragement from a friend.
25. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Liivand’s brief life experiences.
B. Liivand’s innovation on swimming.
C. Liivand’s action against plastic pollution.
D. Liivand’s achievements in swimming.
26. What does the underlined phrase “ran up against” mean in paragraph 4
A. Broke through. B. Prepared for.
C. Came across. D. Took away.
27. What does Liivand’s story inspire people to do
A. Cherish what you have.
B. Stick to your dreams.
C. Face disabilities bravely.
D. Help people in need.

With a host of research showing that late night eating is linked to greater body weight, it’s no wonder avoiding late night eating has long been suggested to people who plan to lose weight. But until now, few studies have actually investigated why. This is what a recent US study set out to uncover.
Researchers had 16 participants follow two different meal schedules, each for a period of six days in total. The first group had their meals early in the day with the last meal consumed six hours and 40 minutes before bedtime. The second group had their daily meals four hours later. This meant they skipped breakfast and instead had lunch, dinner and an evening meal. Their last meal was consumed only two and a half hours before sleep. All the participants consumed the same diet, and all of their meals were equally spaced with around four hours between them.
The researchers looked at three measures associated with weight gain: the influence of appetite, the impact of eating time on calories burned, and changes of fat tissue (组织). They found that compared to an early eating pattern, late eating not only increased feelings of hunger the following day, it also increased the rate of “hunger” hormones (激素) in the blood. Late eating also caused a decrease in calories burned the following day. Fat tissue samples taken from the participants also showed the increased fat storage. These results suggest that late eating could lead to weight gain.
Given that the study was only conducted on a limited number of participants and over a very short time, more research will be needed to further understand whether these changes are only temporary, and what effects long-term late night eating can have on the weight gain mechanisms (机制).
Anyway this study adds to a growing body of evidence showing just how important meal timing can be when it comes to body weight. Therefore, people who are watching their weight may want to stay away from the late night snacks and favour eating most of their meals earlier.
28. What is the study designed to do
A. To provide suggestions on losing weight.
B. To prove the findings of the past research.
C. To explore why a late night meal causes weight gain.
D. To figure out a better meal schedule.
29. What do the two groups have in common
A. They had breakfast four hours later than normal.
B. They had daily meals roughly every four hours.
C. They had some light snacks between meals.
D. Their late night meal lasted for about 150 minutes.
30. Which of the following is a result of late eating
A. The slow intake of nutrition. B. The end in feeling hungry.
C. The increase in blood pressure. D. The greater accumulation of fat.
31. What is the limitation of the study
A. A small number of participants and trial days.
B. The different eating times in the two groups.
C. Lack of more measures related to weight gain.
D. Limited tissue samples taken from volunteers.

From rolling hills to mountain ranges, views make any road trip memorable, but for blind passengers this is part of the experience they can’t enjoy. Motor company Ford tries to change that. It teamed up with GTB Roma and Aedo Project — to develop a technology that will give those unfortunate passengers a way to feel nature’s beauty through their car windows.
The prototype (原型) of the smart car window has a device with an outside-facing camera. With just a press of a button, the system takes a picture of the current view. The colorful picture is then turned into an image with different shades of grey through LED lights, which vibrates (震动) differently. As the finger passes over different regions of the image, its shaking movements provide feedback through the sense of touch to the person using it. The smart window also comes with a voice assistant that uses AI to identify the scene and help the passengers get information on what they’re seeing.
“As the prototype started taking shape, we realized we were giving birth to a completely new language that would give blind people a new chance to visualize (使看见) and experience traveling,” Federico Russo, one director of GTB Roma, said. “When the idea was at its first stage, we looked for suppliers all around the world to make it come to life.” He believes the technology can be applied not just in cars. “It could be introduced into schools and institutions for blind people as a tool that could be used in various ways.”
The technology may show up in a Ford autonomous vehicle. It’s known that the company is testing their technology and future business model and struggling to figure out how an autonomous vehicle gives passengers the details needed to get from one destination to another. It’s unclear when this technology will be made available. However, the idea of building something for the less advantaged is indeed a kind and influential action.
32. How does the smart car window work
A. By changing shades of colors.
B. By recording the view with a camera.
C. By classifying shaking movements.
D. By translating scenery into vibrations.
33. What does Federico Russo say about the technology
A. It will have wide application.
B. It will be tested across the world.
C. It will be used in schools first.
D. It will understand many languages.
34. What’s the author’s attitude towards the technology
A. Unconcerned.
B. Critical.
C. Supportive.
D. Negative.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. AI-based Window Adds Fun to Road Trips
B. Smart Window Lets Blind Passengers Feel Views
C. Technology Makes the Blind’s Trip Enjoyable
D. Ford Develops a System for the Blind to Drive

Ahmad was weak. He was all skin and bones. Worse still, he had a severe skin problem on his face. Added to his problems was the fact that he stuttered (口吃) when he was shy or nervous.
There was one advantage Ahmad had, however. He had a beautiful voice. But none of his friends knew about it as he practiced singing only in the bathroom. Once, he was caught unawares singing in the corridor by his classmates. The moment he saw them, he denied (否认) that the beautiful song they had heard was sung by him. They were convinced when his voice went to a characteristic stutter. “I ... I ... real-lly did-didn’t s-sing ...”
One day, the class of Secondary 4B, which Ahmad was in, heard about a singing competition that was to be held in the nearby community centre. A prize would be awarded to the best student singer. It was a well-known yearly competition. Ahmad entered for it. So it was really a surprise for other students to see Ahmad’s name besides Ali’s on the notice board.
“You can sing, Ahmad Get real! Don’t make me laugh!” Hearing the remarks, Ahmad felt awkward and sad. It was enough that they did not support him but laughing at him was too much. When the results were announced, Class 4B could not believe their ears. Ali, skilled in singing, had of course qualified but so did Ahmad for the finals. How on earth did the stutterer do it They wondered.
The finals of the singing competition finally arrived. Ali’s supporters were out in full force. Mr. Mok, the principal, and some teachers caused quite a stir among the students when they turned up to support the two finalists from their school. Ali sang to the crowd’s delight. It looked like he was the clear favorite. His loud and clear voice, together with his good acting skill, made him popular among the audience.

Dear Jack,
How are you recently I am glad to hear from you. I’m writing to tell you something about our Labor Skill Course.
To form a correct view of labor, we have labor activities every week. We plant vegetables and feed chickens in the school-run farm. Besides, students are encouraged to participate in community service and voluntary work. Most of us are fascinated by the course. Not only are we relaxed, but we have gained a higher satisfaction in life.
That’s all about our new course. If you have other questions, I’m glad to offer further help.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
Ahmad was next and there was a sudden silence before he began. The claps were few, coming from the principal, teachers and his only friend. Some low catcalls (嘘声,不满之声) came from a few disbelieving schoolmates of his who felt that he was not qualified to be a finalist. Getting on the stage, he was determined to prove them wrong. His song was Climb Every Mountain. He adapted his tone and expression to the lyrics, and his delivery was extremely clear. He sang with such rich feelings and his movements were appropriate and well harmonious.
Paragraph 2:
When Ahmad finished singing, there were very few dry eyes. Then there was tense anticipation from the audience as the judges decided on the winner. In view of Ahmad’s outstanding performance, the audience wondered who would be the final winner. After a few anxious minutes of waiting, the results eventually came out. When Mr. Tan, the chief judge announced Ahmad was the winner, the audience present all cheered together and broke into thunderous applause. Getting widely recognized, Ahmad was excited with tears. He tasted the sweet spoils of victory.

W: Yes. I also have Instagram and Facebook accounts.
M: I only have Facebook. I usually post links to what I think is interesting, but sometimes I post my writing.

W: Sara does it, and she’s 29.

M: Now, listen carefully! I want to tell you about a new TV quiz show for teenagers. It’s called Answer That, and it will be on Channel five at four o’clock every Thursday. It will be just like the popular adult quiz show on the same channel on Monday afternoons. I’m sure you’ve all seen that! Every week there will be forty-eight teenagers on the program. They will be in eight teams, and each team will have six people. The questions will be easy at the beginning of the quiz and then they will get more difficult. They will all be about films, music and TV. At the end there will be only one team left — the winners. There will be some great prizes. This week the winners will all get a new camera. Everyone loves taking photos. Next week the first prize is a laptop. If you would like to be on Answer That, then call 0573-5789. Just give your name, age and school address, and maybe you will be on TV soon!
