Text1:
M: Where are you working now, Jennifer Still in the hospital
W: No, I left the hospital and I refused the job at the drug store. I’m working as a teacher in a medical college now.
Text2:
W: I bought a recorder on sale. It was $50.
M: Including tax
W: No, I paid another $2 in tax.
Text3:
W: Doctor, I have a runny nose.
M: Let me see. Nothing serious. Take one of these pills every six hours and you will get better after a week.
Text4:
W: Can you drive a little faster, sir
M: It’s hard in the rush hour. But I’ll try.
W: Thanks a lot. I have an important interview and I don’t want to be late.
Text5:
M: What’s for dinner, Mum Are we having noodles
W: We had that yesterday. So I thought I’d make chicken and rice tonight — or fish if you prefer.
M: That sounds good. But I had chicken at school today, so I don’t really want it again.
Text6:
W: Have you finished reading the magazine, Mark
M: Yes. And now I’m reading some news using my computer. Do you know anything about Jan van Eyck
W: Yes. I know he was an artist of the 15th century. Is there anything about him in the news
M: Yes. The Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent had to close an exhibit of paintings by this famous artist in history.

Text7:
W: Hi, Charlie. How was your holiday
M: Well, before we left, I’d imagined that staying by a lake would be like being at the beach. But as it turned out, a lot of water sports that my family had planned for us were out of the question due to the weather. So instead, my cousin took us for a walk along the shore and showed us where to find beautiful stones — we came back with several.
W: That sounds great. Better than our holiday in the mountains.
Text8:
M: I’ve just got the last estimate for fixing the roof of the house. We decided that the Arkwright’s estimate is too expensive, didn’t we And although the one from Jackson Builders is the cheapest, I don’t really trust them to do a good job.
W: I think you’re right there. They didn’t fill me with confidence.
M: So that leaves us with Valley Builders and Prestons.
W: Personally, I think that Prestons are more professional, and will probably do the best job. They just seemed to talk a lot of sense about what was needed. But their estimate is 1000 more than Valley Builders’. I’m not sure they’re worth that much more.
M: I think you’re right. We should go for Valley Builders. They’re a good company and lots of our neighbors have had work done by them. I haven’t heard any complaints. Do you want to send them an email and ask if they can start as soon as possible
W: Yes, I’ll do that now.

Aretha Franklin, an American singer known as the “Queen of Soul”, was born in 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee. But she was raised in Detroit. Her musical talent was recognized at a young age. Franklin began singing pop and jazz music at the age of 18, when she signed a recording agreement with Columbia Records. But her real success started in 1967 under an agreement with Atlantic Records. Franklin became famous in America that year with a series of hit music recordings, including “Chain of Fools”, and her most famous song, “Respect” in the 1960s. Franklin’s career success continued into the 1980s and 1990s. She appeared in the 1980 film “The Blues Brothers”. She also had new popular music, including “Freeway of Love”. In 1987, Franklin became the first woman to be a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Franklin earned more than 110 entries in Billboard’s music charts. That’s the most by any woman in the magazine’s history. On August 16, 2018, Franklin died at her home in Detroit, Michigan.

If your job requires a lot of sitting, you could be putting your health at danger.
The American Journal of Epidemiology (流行病学) did a study in 2010 on the correlation (相互联系) between sitting and an individual's physical health. In the study, 53,440 working men and 69,776 working women were surveyed on their time spent sitting. The subjects were all disease free when employed. The researchers identified 11,307 deaths in men and 7,923 deaths in women during the 14-year follow-up.
The findings: Women who reported sitting for more than six hours per day had an approximately 40 higher all-cause death rate than those who reported less than three hours a day, and men had an approximately 20 higher death rate.
Well, now's a fine time to get this information. But why didn't they tell me this years ago I would have planned on taking a more active job instead of the sedentary (坐着的) job of an editor.
So what can you do if you have to work for a living at a job that requires a lot of sitting Here are some ideas:
Take frequent breaks. It is recommended that workers vary activities, change their position, and take short breaks every 20 minutes to rest muscles and increase blood circulation. Get a standing desk. Some studies have shown that working from an upright position may be better for health. The serious fitness people can even purchase a treadmill (跑步机) desk. It only goes about one mile per hour. Have a walking meeting. If your group is kind of small, going for a walk while discussing topics is a good alternative.

A.found men reporting shorter sitting time than women
B.surveyed more men than women on their daily sitting time
C.identified fewer deaths in men than in women during the 14-year follow-up
D.discovered correlation between sitting and physical health in men and in women
25.We can infer from the text that the author did not recommend ______.
A.using a standing desk B.resting one's muscles
C.quitting sedentary jobs D.taking a walk while discussing
26.What does the underlined word "subjects" in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Things being discussed. B.People being studied.
C.Areas of knowledge being learned. D.Objects being painted.

A.Your job could be killing you.
B.Working out leads to health risks.
C.Long-time sitting is positively associated with health.
D.A study on sitting time and physical health was completed.

The nation watched with horror as wildfire in California damaged the town of Paradise and surrounding communities. It was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history, killing 85 civilians and destroying nearly 14,000 residences. More than 50,000 people were left homeless.
Watching the news coverage from his home in Denver, Colorado, Woody Faircloth was saddened by the destruction. Many people found themselves homeless with nowhere to live. He just couldn’t imagine being in that position. He knew he wanted to do something to help. He set up a GoFundMe page and invited people to donate so they could purchase and restore a used RV (休闲车) for a family.
Through social media, Faircloth eventually got connected with a family of six that was greatly in need. Faircloth filled the RV with supplies and started the nearly 1,200-mile drive to California to deliver the vehicle. That first donated RV led to another and Faircloth had more than 100 requests for RVs from homeless families. Witnessing how great the need was, Faircloth turned his idea into a nonprofit organization, “we have a platform to help, we have to keep helping,” said Faircloth, whose group has so far given more than 65 RVs to wildfire survivors.
Today, only a minimal amount of rebuilding has begun in Paradise and a majority of the area’s displaced population is still homeless. Faircloth connects with RV owners interested in donating or selling their used RVs at a low cost. He refits the RVs himself and negotiates costs when he needs to hire professional mechanics for heavy-duty repairs. Once the RV is ready to go, Faircloth organizes a way to transport it to the survivors. The work is constant for Faircloth, who also has to do his fulltime job as an account manager. But seeing the impact of his efforts inspires him to keep going. “We have made connections with people at their most vulnerable (脆弱的) moment. It’s such a powerful thing for them,” Faircloth said.
28.How did the writer show the terrible damage of the wildfire
A.By repeating facts. B.By describing the process.
C.By listing figures. D.By quoting sayings.
29.Why did Faircloth set up a GoFundMe page
A.He wanted people to donate food supplies to survivors.
B.He tried to raise money to buy used RVs for survivors.
C.He wanted to connect with the families in need.
D.He hoped to raise funds to rebuild homes for victims.
30.What can we know about Faircloth’s nonprofit organization
A.It has delivered over 65 RVs to homeless survivors.
B.It rebuilt Paradise within a minimal amount of time.
C.It sold used RVs to wildfire victims at a low cost
D.It invited mechanics to repair RVs free of charge.
31.Which word can best describe Faircloth
A.Optimistic. B.Honest. C.Independent. D.Caring.

Chemical engineers at UNSW Sydney have found a way to make "green" ammonia (氨) from air, water and renewable electricity. In a paper published in Energy and Environmental Science, the authors say that ammonia synthesis (合成法) was one of the critical achievements of the 20th century. When used in fusiliers that significantly increase the output of food crops, it enabled agriculture to sustain an ever-expanding global population.
But since the beginning of the 1900s when it was first employed, production of ammonia has been energy intensive- requiring temperatures higher than 400℃ and pressures greater than 200 atm-and all powered by fossil fuels. Dr. Emma Lovell, a co author on the paper from UNSW, says the traditional way to make ammonia- known as the Haber- Bosch process- is only cost-effective when it is produced on a massive scale due to the huge amounts of energy and expensive materials required and it produces more CO2 than any other chemical-making reaction.
“In addition to the big carbon footprint left by the Haber Bosch process, having to produce millions of tons of ammonia in centralised locations means even more energy is required to transport it around the world, not to mention the risks that go with storing large amounts of it in the one place,” says Dr. Lovell. “And we saw tragically in Beirut recently how potentially dangerous storing ammonium nitrate (硝酸盐) can be. ”
Dr. Lovell and her colleagues therefore looked at how to produce it cheaply, on a smaller scale and using renewable energy. Their new production method does not rely on fossil fuel resources, nor give of CO2.
“And once it becomes available commercially, the technology could be used to produce ammonia directly on site and on demand- farmers could even do this on location using our technology to make fertilisers- which means we negate the need for storage and transport There's a huge benefit to society as well as the health of the planet,”Dr. Lovell says.
32.What do we know about the Haver-Bosch process
A.It does harm to the earth. B.It requires green materials.
C.It uses less energy and is cheap. D.It transforms fossil fuels into ammonia.
33.Why is the city Beirut mentioned in the text
A.To remind people to protect the environment.
B.To give an example of the risk in ammonia storage.
C.To convince farmers to transport ammonia elsewhere.
D.To stress the choice of a proper centralised location.
34.What does the underlined word “negate” probably mean in the last paragraph
A.Inspect. B.Avoid. C.Suit. D.Accept.
35.What is the purpose of this text
A.To solve a problem. B.To explain a process.
