正在进行的动作。
结构：
was/were + doing

现在进行时
含义: 表示现在正在进行
的动作。
结构：

Past Progressive Tense
(过去进行时)
过去进行时表示过去某一时刻或某段时间正在进行的动作。过去进行时由
“ ”构成。
was / were + 动词-ing形式

2. 过去一段时间正在进行的动作
常与the whole day, all day yesterday等时间状语连用。有时没有明显的时间状语，可根据上下文语境判断。

I was looking for my lost cat at nine last Monday morning.
1. 过去某一时刻正在进行的动作
与表示过去某一时间点的时间状语连用，如at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, at this/that time yesterday等。
Summary
过去进行时和一般过去时的区别
1) 过去进行时表示过去正在进行的动作,
2） 一般过去时表示过去某个时间发生过的动作。
如：
David wrote a letter to his friend last night.
大卫昨晚给他的朋友写了封信。(信写完了。)
David was writing a letter to his friend last night.
大卫昨晚一直在给他的朋友写信。(信不一定写完。)

注意：表示主从句正在进行的动作或状态的对比时多用while：

when与 while
1) when 可指时间点, 又可指时间段, 从句中可用延续性动词,
也可用非延续性动词。
when 引导的从句可用过去进行时，也可用一般过去时.
2) while 总是指一个时间段, 从句中必须用延续性动词。
while 引导的从句通常用过去进行时.
