Voluntary Work in the Library
Aiming to promote the spirit of working hard, the Students’ Union of our school arranged for the Senior 2 students to do voluntary work in the library last weekend.
Having assigned tasks in advance, we got down to work upon arrival. Some students helped with the clean-up while others shelved new books under the guidance of the librarians. We also designed posters for new books, which was the most challenging part.
Tired as we were, we regarded it as a meaningful activity, through which we learned a sense of belonging and the value of being a contributing member of our school.

参考答案
It was exciting to go to school again but it was no picnic. At first, I felt really embarrassed to be sitting in a classroom with all the kids staring at me, even though I knew they were only doing it out of curiosity. Fortunately, the attitude of the teachers calmed my nerves. They didn’t say much but they behaved with great understanding. However, the first few months of going back to studying were undoubtedly challenging, for I had totally forgotten what I had learned in my younger days. Also, as a mother of three children, I had to juggle loads of housework and my kids’ needs while doing my courses.
Linda and I helped each other through this difficult time. Linda would share the housework when I was up to my eyebrows with my schoolwork. And when she was down, I would stay by her side, offering comfort and encouragement. I have to say, it was a hard time for both of us but we didn’t give up. Finally, I completed all the credits needed for graduation. I glowed with pride as I was presented with my diploma. Waving my hands at Linda, I could hardly contain my excitement. At last, the unfinished business in my dreams had been finished.大庆名校2022---2023学年度下学期4月考考试

A few extraordinary female singer-songwriters from the 1970s helped form music as we know it today, and continue to inspire so many with their soulful melodies(旋律).
Joni Mitchell
Joni Mitchell’s influence goes beyond her own generation. Her earnest songwriting continues to be a source of inspiration for many, who acknowledge her position as a pioneer of female expression in music.
The 1971 album Blue showed Joni’s truthful self, telling the stories of her experiences in life and in love. Blue was later chosen by the New York Times as one of the 25 albums that represented “turning points and the highest points in 20th-century popular music”.
Carole King
Carole King wrote or co-wrote over 118 hits between 1955 and 1999, making her the most successful female songwriter in the second half of the 20th century. However, King initially found herself less recognized than her husband and writing partner at the time, Gerry Goffin.
As the 1970s arrived, so did Carole King in full bloom. Now pursuing a solo career, 1971 saw the release (发行)of her album Tapestry. The album was highly significant, not only commercially but symbolically.
Joan Armatrading
Still in the 1970s but putting in the work on this side of the pond, Joan Armatrading became the first black British female artist to achieve international praise.
Joan’s place as a female pioneer in music continued as she became the first UK female artist to be nominated (提名)for a Grammy in the blues category, going on to receive two further nominations. An artist who is confident with who she is and what she wants to create, Armatrading famously keeps her private life to herself and lets her music do the talking.

When Sholapurkar got a call from the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) enquiring whether he could help the organization get in touch with regular donors and encourage them to donate blood, he jumped in.
He started checking out and contacting the members of voluntary donors from the IRCS database. Through his efforts, he persuaded scores of people to come to the blood bank in central Delhi and donate their blood. “There is fear in the air due to the coronavirus(冠状病毒), and it is not easy to overcome it. It was my task to inspire confidence in blood donors and tell them that it is absolutely safe to donate blood,” Sholapurkar says.
He has been donating blood for more than 40 years now — 163 times to be exact, probably the highest in India. That is almost four times a year; it is also the maximum number of times a person can donate blood in a year. “As I complete 90 days after a donation, I feel my body and mind dragging me toward a blood bank,” Sholapurkar laughs. The IRCS calls people like Sholapurkar “centurion blood donors” —in other words, those who have donated blood more than a hundred times.
According to Sholapurkar, blood donation is not only a healthy practice, it is also one way of showing that you care for others. “Voluntary blood donation is a very personal thing. Nobody can force you to do it; you do it out of love for other human beings.” He says, “It gives you enormous satisfaction when you know that your blood will be used to save someone’s life. That is a very powerful feeling indeed.” Sholapurkar was only 17 when he first donated blood, and he remembered his mother not being very happy about it.” It was in a National Cadet Corps (NCC) camp. My mother was rather angry, but she was okay when I told her how blood donation helps,” he recalls.
Sholapurkar has worked in various corporate organizations over the years. These days, however, he devotes most of his time to spreading the message of the importance of blood donation. “I tell people to get addicted to blood donation, just like l am. It has no side effects, you will remain healthy and it is one addiction you will never feel bad about,” he says.
24.How do people react to donating blood in the coronavirus pandemic(流行病)
A.They never go to the blood bank.
B.They may be afraid of being infected.
C.They are ready to donate blood in any case.
D.They inspire confidence in blood donation.
25.Which word best describes Sholapurkar’s attitude to blood donation
A.Ambiguous. B.Supporting. C.Tolerant. D.Objective.
26.What does Sholapurkar do now during his work in corporate organizations
A.Act as a role model for people.
B.Devote himself to donating blood.
C.Advise people to keep healthy at any time.
D.Inform people of the significance of donating blood.
27.Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.It Is Worthwhile to Donate Blood
B.A Man Is Buried in Donating Blood

The invention of the 1D barcodes(条形码) changed supermarkets and general market management completely. But shortly after their introduction, their disadvantages were clear. There was an instant demand to be able to encode (编码) more than 20 alphanumeric characters (字符) that the traditional barcodes could hold.
Denso Wave, a Japanese company, at the time, was in the business of producing 1D barcode scanners(扫描器). Listening to feedback from users of the 1D barcode scanners they were selling, they put together a development team to come up with a solution.
One of the key goals was to ensure that no matter what barcode they designed, it can be scanned very fast. It took the team nearly 18 months, and eventually they came up with a barcode that could hold up to 7,000 alphanumerical characters and could be scanned up to 10 times faster than any other code at the time. In 1994, the QR Code was born.
The QR Code quickly spread outside of Japan and were approved for many standards globally. But that wasn’t the end of the development of the QR Code. After all, nothing is perfect at its beginning and people soon began to present more requirements to Denso Wave. The variations (变体) of the QR Code were soon developed.
One of the biggest reasons why the QR Code has been able to be used widely is that Denso Wave made the decision to make the QR Code publicly available. This means anyone can use it without paying any fees. Denso Wave do hold a patent for the QR Code, but have declared that they have no intention to exercise it.
It wasn’t until 2002 that the first smartphones came to market with the QR Code scanner, and this really speed up the technology. Once widespread on phones, almost anyone can read these codes and doesn’t require expensive hardware to do so. It is believed that Nokia is the first to bring this technology to a mobile device.
24.What is the disadvantage of the 1D barcodes
A.The information they store is too little.
B.They sometimes encoded wrong characters.
C.They disturbed general market management.
D.They could only be used in some supermarkets.
25.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.A character. B.A scanner. C.A barcode. D.Denso Wave.
26.What is a reason why the QR Code spreads so quickly
A.It has been protected by a patent.
B. People have fewer demands for its variations.
C.It has been perfect since its first appearance.
D.The public are permitted to use it for free.
27.What is the text mainly about
A.The reasons for developing the QR Code.
B.The disadvantages of the 1D barcodes.
C.A famous development team.
D.An introduction of the QR Code.
D
No business would welcome being compared to gambling (赌博).Yet that is what is happening to makers of video games. For years parents have complained that their children are “addicted” to their video games and smartphones. Today, however, even more doctors are using the term. On January 1st this year, “gaming disorder”—in which games are played uncontrollably, despite causing harm—gained recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO).
Are games really addictive Psychologists have different opinions. Those who don’t think so say that this is just another moral panic. Similar warnings have been given about television, rock’n’roll, jazz, comic books, novels and even crossword puzzles, but it turns out that they are not as harmful as expected.
However, supporters argue that game developers have the motivation(动机,动力) and the means to design their products to make them extremely attractive. For one thing. the business-model has changed. In the old days, games were bought once and for all. But these days, games are free and money is earned from purchases of in-game goods, which ties playtime directly to revenue (收益). For another, game-makers combine psychological theory and data, which helps them extend the playtime. Smartphones and modern video game machines use their permanent Internet connections to send gameplay data back to developers. In this way products are constantly adjusted to encourage players’ spending. The biggest spenders are known as “whales”, a word that originated in casinos(赌场).
The gaming industry should realize that, in the real world, it has a problem, and that problem is growing. Now that gaming addiction comes with an official WHO recognition, diagnoses(诊断) will become more common. Anyway, being put together with gambling in the public mind, fairly or not, will not do the industry any good.
32.What do we know from Paragraph 1
A.It is not suitable to compare video games to gambling
B.Parents complain about their children’s addiction to gambling
C.More doctors are against the use of the term “addicted”.

33.What does the underlined words “moral panic” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Wrong judgment on how harmful something is.
B.Trouble caused by someone’s immoral behavior.
C.Unexpected social progress caused by science and technology.
D.Panic due to the gap between the old and the young
34.What do games developers do to make games attractive
A.They don’t charge players for in-game goods.
B.They adjust products based on received data.
C.They keep players’ video game machines updated.
D.They reward big spenders with a unique title.
35.In the last paragraph, the author aims to _________.
A.offer a suggestion B.make a prediction
C.give a warning D.put forward a solution

A Dream Come True
For many years, I kept having the same dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
“Hurry, you’ll be late for school,” my mother called to me.
“I am hurrying, Mom. What did I do with my books ”
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all, I longed to someday march down the aisle (走廊) to receive my diploma (毕业文凭). That seemed more appealing even than getting married.
But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition(学费). My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought. Years later, I married and had three children, and I thought, “There goes my diploma.”
Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life with regret. I didn’t give up hope of her going back to school in some way.
One day, I saw an ad. in the newspaper for evening courses. “That’s the answer,” I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I’ll just sign her up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment (登记) forms when the secretary(助理,秘书) said, “Mrs. Schantz, why don’t you come back to school ”
I laughed, “There’s no way. I’m 55.” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and art. “This is only an experiment,” I warned the secretary, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester(学期) and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.
