After graduating from college, I worked as a salesman for a piano company. We advertised our pianos in small town newspapers and then, when we had received many replies, we would load our little trucks, and drive into the area and sell the pianos to those who had replied.
Every time we advertised, we would receive a reply on a postcard which said, “Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter. It must be red mahogany (红木). I can pay $10 a month with my egg money.” Of course, we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month. No finance company would carry a contract with payments that small, so we ignored her postcards.
One day, however, I happened to be in that area calling on other replies, and out of curiosity I decided to look the old lady up. I found pretty much what I expected: The old lady lived in a one-room cabin in the middle of a cotton field. The cabin had a dirt floor and there were chickens in the house. Obviously, the old lady could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit — no car, no phone, no real job, nothing but a roof over her head and not a very good one at that.
I could see daylight through it in several places. Her little granddaughter was about 10, barefoot and wearing a feed sack (麻布袋) dress. I explained to the old lady that we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month and that she should stop writing to us every time she saw our ad. I drove away heartsick, but my advice had no effect — she still sent us the same post card every six weeks. Always wanting a new piano, red mahogany, please, and swearing she would never miss a $10 payment. It was sad.
Several years later, I owned my own piano company, and when I advertised in that area, the postcards started coming to me. For months, I ignored them — what else could I do
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But then, one day when I was in the area, I made a big decision.

“Are we really planning on staying here ” Sophie asked me. “I feel like we have no choice!” I responded to her. The place in question was the Starfish Holiday In, a motel (汽车旅馆) of doubtful character on the beach in Jacksonville, Florida. We ended up here because of our own irresponsibility. It was our freshman year of college, and being eager to escape the cold and upsetting weather for spring break, we decided to travel to the sunny south, for we had frequently been told in TV programs and movies about the fascinating scenery of its beaches. Florida’s natural beauty and lively cities make it the top destination in the world. With more than 1, 200 miles of sand beaches and 160 state parks, tourists can find a corner to enjoy all to themselves.
However, it was a last minute decision; we did not make reservations anywhere ahead of time. When we arrived in Florida, we tried to book a room in a good but affordable hotel. After going to six hotels and finding no room left at all, we stopped at an information centre. A kind and helpful woman delivered the discouraging news that, if we didn’t have reservations anywhere, it would be very difficult for us to find a safe place to stay. She recommended that we check a couple of places, but they all seemed too expensive for us. Then she said that the Starfish Inn provided rooms that were reasonably priced, but that she would not want her daughters to stay there!
So that is how we got into our difficult situation. After paying the owner of the motel, we dragged our luggage to the room, where we opened the door with great shock. Everything in the room was in shades of blue and green, with real and painted starfish on nearly every surface; the place looked like it hadn't been redecorated since 50 years ago! It looked like a mess. How could we spend the whole night in such a room
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
We looked at each other and then decided to further check out the place.

Last March, Jack drove to visit his mother who lived in the countryside. When he set off for home, Jack’s mother looked at the dark sky and noticed the sign of a coming storm. Worried about her son’s safety, she told him to drive as carefully as possible on his way home and he promised to give her a call upon his arrival.
With his mother’s words in mind, Jack approached the main road carefully. Soon, it started to rain heavily. Eager to get home, Jack began to drive faster. Two hours later, he came to a bumpy mountain road that had been flooded by a creek (小溪). Jack, driving a four-wheel drive truck, figured that he would be OK. At that moment, he didn’t realize that such a thought would be a big mistake.
It was halfway across the creek that an unfortunate incident took place: The rushing waters grabbed hold of his vehicle, pushing it off the road and sending it down a rocky creek bed. The truck finally stopped some 80 feet away. Jack’s problems only grew from there as the water had somehow positioned the truck into the creek bank at a 45-degree angle, making it difficult for him to open the driver’s side door. Injured and trapped inside with the muddy water rising quickly, Jack was certain he was going to die. Shaking with fear, he was at a loss about what to do.
On the road right behind Jack were a delivery worker named Hugh and his nephew Mike, who were on the way to deliver furniture to customers in the countryside. They witnessed the horrible incident, and when Jack’s truck came to rest in the middle of the overflowing creek, Hugh quickly began to take action. First, he grabbed a rope from the back of his vehicle and used it to ensure he could safely approach the truck.

Whether we notice it or not, our child is a little reflection of ourselves. They grow up looking more and more like us. They even have similar personalities and hobbies. And in some cases, the standard of choosing a good friend.
One day, my 10-year-old Jane said, “Mom, I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow ” Her words made me extremely happy because Jane was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell.
“Sure, honey, that sounds great.” I said, thinking back to my own childhood best friend, Susan. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights, New York. We met at the age of 10, too. Like my daughter. I was shy and had trouble making friends. But Susan drew me out. She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a mile-wide smile. Thanks to Susan. I was happy every day.
In senior high school, Susan went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days. “I’ll be back soon and I will write to you as soon as I arrive.” she told me. But I didn’t get her phone call nor receive any mail from her. Soon, my family moved to New Jersey, making my hope of seeing Susan impossible.
Whenever I thought of him, tears came into my eyes.
The next day Jane brought her new friend home. “Hi, Mrs. Smith.” the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she gave me a big smile. “My name is Jo. My mom will pick me up 2 hours later.”

It’s a beautiful sunny day. The Bonds boarded their boat for a carefree day trip to Dove Island for some fishing as a family custom. Thomas Bond, a 30-year-old construction worker, loved the sport, especially catching bass (鲈鱼) and had impressed on his oldest daughter, Lizzy, a love of the outdoors, teaching her how to bait (下诱饵) a hook and cast a line and brave the waves.
The family spent the day fishing in the vast ocean, and then left the island in the early evening. Upon setting off from the shore, they found thick fog rolling in. Lizzy fell into a light sleep beside her five-year-old sister, Molly, at a table on the boat’s lower deck (甲板). Their father’s sharp orders woke her up: “Get out of the boat. The boat’s sinking!” Lizzy pushed her sister into the cold, dark water. Both girls wore life jackets. The adults did not. The girls were followed by their mother, Petra Bond, who was expecting a baby at that time. Within seconds, the boat was damaged and was left just the tip of its bow in the air.
Looking into the faces of her father, mother, and sister, Lizzy wasn’t frightened. After some time, her father told them he would swim for help. “I’ll be back,” he said before disappearing into the darkness.
“Dad is like the superhero to me. I believe he will get help to rescue us,” Lizzy said to herself. After some time, her mother became quiet and stopped swimming. Lizzy wrapped a rope around her mother’s chest and tied her to the boat so she wouldn’t float away. Then her sister fell quiet too and she stayed beside her.
To keep herself awake, Lizzy daydreamed about what they would do after they were rescued. They would stay in a hotel, order room service, and lie comfortably under the blankets in bed, cozy and warm.

A New Addition to the Family
For the initial ten years of his life, Victor was the prince of the household. As he was an only child, his parents petted him and showered all their love and attention on him. Whatever toys his parents bought, they were always meant for him. Whatever food was in the refrigerator, there was no one to compete with him to polish it off first. Victor could leave his toys or books around the house with complete ease of mind, knowing that there was no one who would get their hands on his belongings and cause any damage.
However, all that was to change overnight when Victor’s parents brought back his new baby sister, Lina, from the hospital. With her rosy cheeks, wide open eyes and angelic smile, Lina caught the hearts of her parents, grandparents and relatives. Everyone focused their attention on the cute bunch of joy. Whenever she cried, her mother or father would rush to her bed. She simply cried because she wanted to be carried. There was little time left for Victor.
Now that Victor’s mother had his baby sister to take care of, she expected Victor himself to do most of the chores he can do. Victor was asked to clean his own room, iron his own school uniform and clean his own shoes. Before Lina’s arrival, he had never lifted a finger to help out with these tasks. The whole family also went out less because it was unhealthy to expose Lina to the bacteria(细菌) being in the outside world too often.
Victor felt neglected by his parents. He felt that they loved Lina more than him. As a result, he tried to attract his parents’ attention by becoming resistant. One evening, Victor’s parents were called up by his teacher because Victor had got into a fight at school. His teacher had noticed Victor’s behaviour and work attitude changing downwards in the past two months. Before that, he had been a model student.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Julia Koch began what was only her second year as a firstgrade teacher in a virtual classroom at Edgewood Elementary School. One September afternoon a few weeks into the school year, she received a call from Cynthia Phillips, who was having technical difficulties with her granddaughter’s tools for online learning.
Koch immediately noticed something was wrong with Phillips. They had spoken many times before, but Koch had never heard Phillips sound quite like this. Her words were so jumbled(混乱)that Koch could barely understand her, though she was able to make out that Phillips had fallen four times that day. Koch called her principal, Charlie, who assured her that he would call and check on Phillips himself.
Just like Koch, Charlie could barely understand Phillips. He suspected she might be having a stroke-he recognized the signs from when his own father had suffered one. Meanwhile, Charlie immediately became concerned that Phillips’s two grand children, ages six and eight, were probably home alone with her. Charlie asked his office manager to send an ambulance to the grandmother’s home. Then he called Mathews and Keytria, two deans in the school district, to tell them what was going on. Both of them dropped everything and drove to the family’s home.
When they pulled up less than ten minutes later, the doctors were treating Phillips while the two girls, looking visibly shaken, were outside with a neighbor. The quick response from Koch and Charlie saved Phillips’s life. She arrived at the hospital in time to get treatment and before chronic damage occurred.
注意:续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

On the way back from work every evening, more often than not there would be a homeless man standing at the exit of the freeway. He looked to be in his late 40s but was probably a lot younger. He had shoulder length straight black hair and a short beard, and he was of average stature.
His eyes were what struck me the most about him, they were brown and they had a sparkle. Like an inside light that was beaming out of his eyes. His eyes, I thought, represented the man in general. People say they can tall a lot from a person’s eyes. It was certainly true in his case. He always waved at every car, he was always happy and smiling and sometimes almost dancing.
Every day after work I would remember to gather any spare change, and put it aside to give to him if I saw him. A feeling of joy would come over me every time I saw him, while coming off the ramp. He had that effect.
I’d quickly roll down my window and give him the coins. Occasionally the red light would be on for a minute and we would ask each other about our day. His answer would always be the same, “I’m blessed!”
I knew what his answer was going to be every time, yet I would still ask. It amazed me that even in his situation of being homeless he was so positive, and his answer would remind me of how blessed I was. A single mother of four amazing kids, with a place to call home and with a job to provide for my kids.
Then one day I was called into my boss’s office and was told that I was being laid off due to the economy. A feeling of worry overcame me, and for the rest of that day all I could think of was “How am I going to provide for my kids, how am I going to pay rent, what am I going to do ”

I first met Lisa Kincaid on the volleyball court as she played for a rival high school belonging to the conference I coach in. Many times I was on the opposing sidelines and watched in amazement at her athleticism. The speed of a cheetah (猎豹), the mental toughness of an accomplished player, and a 32 inch vertical jump as only a second-grader.
Starting her junior year, I was fortunate to coach Lisa on a USA Junior Olympic Volleyball team, and it was during those two years that I grew to love and respect her.
If anyone had a right to be cocky of herself it was Lisa. Besides being one of the best volleyball and basketball players in the state, she became a track legend in the Dairy State. How good was she She went 64 straight conference meets and never lost in any event she was entered in. She made trips to the state finals all four years in high school, and returned with 6 state titles. Many times she was the lone representative at the state competition for her team, and single-handedly placed her high school as high as third. Even when she filled in for other events, she never lost one.
However, never once did she boast about her accomplishments. Instead, she usually shifted the conversation to the performances of other teammates.
There was one particular track meet during Lisa’s junior year, where she impressed upon me most. It was a non-conference meet in the year and Lisa’s coach told her to run the mile. Again she agreed.
First, Lisa outdistanced the competition, but on the last lap, she “seemed” to grow “tired”. Two athletes from the other team passed her, and then so did Julie, Lisa’s teammate. Thinking of the fact that Julie needed to earn a set amount of points in her track program to earn a favorable letter and that she needed to finish at least third for the first time, Lisa was “able to stay just behind’’ her teammate and cross the finish line at Julie’s heels.

I went up to the roof for a break after studying for an hour and watched the 50 or so people swimming in the natural rock pool below our house. It was a sunny day--a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. But then, as I looked in the distance, I discovered three or four big waves heading towards the shore. I'd seen these mini-tsunamis(海啸) many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the pool. Most people knew how to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.
Without thinking, I ran down into the street, holding my body board(俯伏冲浪板) on the way and shouted at a stranger to go inside my house and call the coastguard. My neighbor Moises had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his body board, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the sea.
Once we got closer, we discovered the waves had pulled a boy and a girl from the pool and into the open sea. I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. Waiting for help wasn't a choice. I wasn't used to this sort of emergency--I’d never been trained as a lifeguard-but I didn't think twice about trying to save them. I supposed in a way I wanted to impress everyone: at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.
Moises and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally reached them, they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer. I held the boy and pulled him over my board. Moises moved the girl onto his board. We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out.

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem, my inability to read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued to the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together.
Paragraph 1:
My mother's call returned, me to the real world. I suddenly realized something.
Paragraph 2:
And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, and was awarded a PhD in literature.
