There’s no doubt that work deadlines can be stressful. When you have too many, you can feel overcome. And nearing deadlines encourages last-minute dashes for the finish line, like when students pull ‘all-nighters’ in an attempt to achieve weeks’ worth of essay writing in a handful of hours.
Yet there’s no question deadlines can serve a positive psychological function-after all, without them, many students might never even finish their work. You can see evidence for the power of deadlines in the ‘real world’, too. For instance, in 2015, when the US National Science Foundation dropped its usual twice-yearly deadlines for grant submissions in geoscience, as part of an attempt to help the overburdened system, the effect was dramatic. Annual submissions fell by 59% without the pressure of a deadline and it seems that many scientists lacked the urgency and motivation to deliver their applications.
As new research findings shed light on the psychology of deadlines, we can learn ways that deadlines can be used to increase focus and boost perseverance.

It says in Weibo post, however, that it does not admit students only based on their test scores.
The University statement came after some Chinese media reported over the weekend that the university would start to admit Chinese students that ranked in the top 0.1 percent in the gaokao in their province, indicating that it would try to compete for talent with top universities in China.
The news immediately became one of the most viewed topics on social media, being read by 280 million users on Sina Weibo.
The gaokao is increasingly accepted by universities in Australia, the United States, Canada and Europe. Su Hua: I am required to attend online classes every day and I always listen attentively to what teachers instruct. As to questions put forward by teachers, I try to answer and talk to myself, even when teachers can’t hear my voice. I can complete daily online homework as expected. Sometimes, food, or other things distract me, but I can put them away. I feel content with my everyday progress. I think the best way to learn efficiently during the extended holiday is to manage myself effectively.
Li Jiang: My parents have said I attend online classes every day, but do not pay attention at all. I can’t resist the temptation to play games with smartphones. Thus, it is difficult for me to finish assignments on my own. Last week, when I went back to school to take the first exam, the results were not satisfying. Lucy was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles ”
“Oh, yes, but I don’t have money on me,” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating, Lucy cried silently.
“What is it ” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing. Actually, I was just touched by your kindness!” said Lucy as she wiped her tears.” Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!” Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your gratitude to her ”
Lucy sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why didn’t I think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful. Why haven’t I thanked my mum for what she has done for me ”
On the way home, Lucy made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

May 18, 1986, was the kind of beautiful, sunny day that regularly brought the Rodriguez family to Santa Catalina Island for some fishing on their nine-metre pleasure boat, the DC Too. They spent the day fishing in the Pacific Ocean, then left the island in the early evening.
Soon thick fog rolled in. Louise fell into a light sleep beside her five-year-old sister, Trisha, at a table on the boat’s lower deck. Their father’s sharp orders frightened her awake: “Get out of the boat. It’s sinking!” Louise pushed her sister into the cold, dark water. The girls were followed by their mother, Petra Rodriguez. Both girls wore life jackets, but the adults did not. Within seconds, the boat capsized, leaving just the tip of its bow in the air.
After some time, her father told them he would swim for help. Louise watched him disappear into the darkness. A while later, her mother went still. Then her sister died, too.
Pisano and Strasser, both 25, were going on a fishing expedition. The fog was so thick that they couldn’t even see the stern(船尾) of the boat. They decided to try one more spot before going home. Late that afternoon, the fog cleared and the sun started shining. On their return voyage, about 11 kilometres away from Catalina Island, Pisano noticed something yellow floating in the water.
Strasser steered(驾驶) the boat closer and Pisano jumped into the water. He swam toward the figure and grabbed the life jacket. Fortunately, Louise was saved and quickly sent to hospital. The little girl soon recovered, but the search for Louise’s father, sister and mother was in vain.
Louise was adopted by her aunt and uncle. She attended college, got married in 2013 and gave birth to a son. In her late 20s, Louise began to wonder about her rescuers. She even tried to find them but no luck. One day, Louise came across a magazine article featuring Pisano talking about the 1986 rescue.

When I was a child, I lived in a house with a beautiful garden full of different flowers, and roses were the most beautiful of them. There was nothing I enjoyed more than sitting in the garden with my mother, reading stories to me. When I was in primary school and old enough to read, I enjoyed reading stories aloud to her.
I will never forget one day when I had been picked to be the princess in the school play. For weeks my mother had practised my lines so hard with me. But however easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (叙述者) part to the play, and asked me to change my role. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to take a walk in the garden.
It was May and roses were blossoming and, under the trees, we could also see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass, as if a painter had painted our garden with red, yellow and green. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion.
“I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower is beautiful in its own way, isn’t it ” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over.
“And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.”
Realizing that she had guessed my pain, I started crying as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly.

One afternoon after school, Mary and her brother,Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.

Keith looked at the handphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a handphone. But his parents had told him, “You don’t need one. You can always use the house phone.”
He stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, pausing on every word,“I want to take the handphone.”
Mary could not believe her ears. She merely stared at her brother. “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it ”
Having made the decision,Keith quickly grabbed the handphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Keith locked his house door with trembling hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. Oh, he liked it so much. Now he had his own handphone. Soon, he was polishing it happily.
But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the handphone. What will you tell Father about this He will ask you how you got the handphone.”
Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.”
Mary said, “Now you are lying too.” Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest
Then Mary saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the handphone. “This is the girl’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her handphone.” She was trying to talk some sense into him.

When I was a baby,my parents always gave me anything I waned. Then my dad died when l was three, and I got even more stuff as my mom, fiends and family tried to make me feel better. Mom continued to treat me to whatever I wanted until I was seven and my world changed.
My mom had thought buying houses was a good way to invest her money. But the real estate (房地产) market crashed. I went from the kid who got an iPod when his tooth fell out and who had the coolest house to hang out in, to literally haying nowhere to stay. Mom's best fiend Auntie Loren, took us in until Mom could figure out what to do.
After the real estate crash, when I asked fora new toy, or bike, or even to see a movie Mom would say "maybe for your birthday" or "I'm sorry honey, but we can't really afford that now." I didn't know it then, but Mom had grown up in a family where money was never a problem, so this change was as big for her as it was for me. My constant requests for toys and video games were not helping my mom, who was already a widow, deal with her feelings about our new crisis-our financial situation. But I wasn't used to hearing "no”. So for a year or two I kept asking.
Then something happened that would change my way of thinking forever. My mom had been working hard all year, just to pay for the necessities, like our water and power bills. When she asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I said I wanted a new video gaming system . I didn't know it was expensive. All knew was that my friends had them and that I wanted one, too.

Mr. Taylor checked again: water, food, bandage, medicines, a compass, and a map wrapped in plastic... Bingo! He put all that he prepared for the coming hiking into his backpack.
Mr. Taylor was fond of hiking, this time in particular, for it was the first time for him to hike with his two sons, Harry and Joel. Joel liked reading books about explorers and Harry joined the hiking club in his school this term. It will be an unforgettable experience, definitely, he whispered to himself unconsciously a smile spreading over his face.
Harry and Joel, however, argued for the first three miles of their hiking trip. Harry accused Joel of wearing smelly old shoes. Joel blamed Harry for using all of the bug spray(喷雾防虫剂).Harry told Joel he smelled terrible. Joel called Harry a coward(懦夫).
“Will the two of you just quiet down and enjoy our hike together ” their father said. "You’re missing all of the beautiful scenery!"
It was true. Neither Joel nor Harry had taken notice of the bear their father had spied at the start of their trip. They hadn’t looked up at the eagle he pointed out overhead. Worst of all, they hadn’t paid any attention to the turns and twists along the way while they continued their argument.
“Joel threw a stick at me!” Harry screamed. "That’s not true!” Joel shouted back.
Mr. Taylor could no longer contain his anger. "And both of you need to stop arguing!" he erupted. As he turned to face them, his left foot caught on a root. He slipped backward and down muddy bank, falling into the river that ran alongside the path,
Harry and Joel raced to their father’s assistance. They helped him up out of the water, and then dragged his wet backpack up onto land.
Fortunately, their wet-through father found himself just slightly injured.

My name is Adam and I'm a freshman at senior high school. Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big challenge. The first week was a little confusing.
Firstly I had to think very carefully about which courses I wanted to take, I turned to the school adviser for advice, He is very kind and patient He helped me choose the suitable ones: maths, English, chemistry, world history, and Chinese. I know that Chinese is a very difficult language, but I hope to have a very good command of it and' be fluent when I graduate. My adviser also recommended that I should sign up for advanced literature because I like English and I'm good at it
Secondly, I had to choose extra-curricular activities, too. I tried to join the school football team, but the coach told me that I didn't play well enough. Obviously, I was unhappy and in low spirits, but I won't quit. I'm determined to practice more and make improvements on my own so that I can make the team next year. When Ruth was sixty-eight years old, she visited her daughter Judy and teenage granddaughter Marcy in California. They headed for their cabin, moving forty miles up and down the mountains in their car, along a narrow one-lane road that wound terrifyingly close to cliffs (悬崖).
After dinner, Marcy announced the water tank was low and that she would drive the car down to the pump and get water. Ruth was nervous about her young granddaughter driving down the narrow road by herself, but Judy reminded her that Marcy had been driving vehicles up there roads for many years
“Just be careful, Marcy”, her mother warned. “They’ve had a drought up here and the road along the cliff is pretty shaky. Be sure to hug the mountain side.”
Ruth and Judy watched Marcy from the big window where they could see the road winding down the mountainside. Fifteen minutes later, Judy was still watching when suddenly she screamed,”Oh no! She went over the cliff, Momma! The car and Marcy--they went over! We have to help her!Come on!”
Judy took off running desperately. Grabbing a three-foot-long walking stick against the cabin door, Ruth ran behind her, but Judy was quickly out of sight after the first turn in the road. Breathing hard, Ruth ran on and on, trying to catch up with her daughter. It was getting harder and harder to see anything at dusk.
Suddenly she stopped, not knowing where she was.”Marcy!Judy!”she shouted.
A faint voice .”Momma!”It was Judy.
Ruth screamed into the darkness “Judy, where are you ” Off to her right and down the cliff she heard, “Down here,Mother!Don’t come near the edge! I slipped on loose rocks and fell over. I’m down about ten feet.”
“Oh dear! Judy, what can I do ”

10.To meet deadlines, people have to work with every fibre of their being, feeling stressed and pressured. However, deadlines can function positively and powerfully, proved by the 2015 example.
Deadlines have great influence on our work. For one thing, part of the motivating power of deadlines has to do with our goal. To realize our goal, we are willing to burn the midnight oil to get the work done more efficiently. For another, deadlines can help keep us in focus and advance our work. Without deadlines, we might find our targets and priorities postponed indefinitely, creating a feeling that we are simply drifting along, lacking in work enthusiasm.
Here are my suggestions on how best to tackle the problem. Firstly, draw up a schedule and ensure everything goes according to it. If not, adjust it in time. Secondly, stay focused on your schedule and pace your efforts.
Now, get down to your work today and you will surely complete it before the deadline and gain an unexpected harvest.
文章最后一句“we can learn ways that deadlines can be used to increase focus and boost perseverance(我们能够发现截止日期能被用来提高注意力,增强毅力。)” 例如范文中前半部分主要写part of the motivating power of deadlines has to do with our goal(截止日期的激发作用与目标有关),我们可以关注目标,提升战斗力。后半部分主要写deadlines can help keep us in focus and advance our work(截止日期能让我们集中于目标,继续保持前进)。
work with every fibre of their being(绷紧神经工作);have great influence on…(对……有重要影响);has to do with…(与……有关);are willing to…(愿意);burn the midnight oil to…(熬夜去做……);keep us in focus(让我们保持注意力);pace your effort(调整好你的努力)等。
此外本文还使用了一些高级词汇,如work with every fibre of their being;have great influence on…;has to do with…;are willing to…;burn the midnight oil to…;keep us in focus;pace your effort等。
11.The University of Cambridge announced that it had been accepting China's gaokao scores when admitting students for several years. Actually, more and more universities in Western countries have begun to accept the gaokao.
From where I stand, the gaokao's gaining more international acceptance conveys the messages that China is becoming much stronger and more influential on the world stage. First of all, China has created numerous economic miracles since its reform and opening up. It's known to all that China is the world's second largest economy and its GDP has been increasing rapidly in the past 40 years. Secondly, China has made great achievements in science and technology. Let's take " four new great inventions " for example. High-speed railways, electronic payments, shared bicycles and online shopping have completely changed the world. Last but not the least, China's soft power has been improved. As a country with a history of 5000 years, China has been spreading its culture throughout the world. More and more foreign countries begin to show interest in, and respect for China.

Because, As, So, Thus, Therefore, As a result
From where I stand, the gaokao's gaining more international acceptance conveys the messages that China is becoming much stronger and more influential on the world stage. First of all, China has created numerous economic miracles since its reform and opening up. it做形式主语It's known to all that China is the world's second largest economy and its GDP has been increasing rapidly in the past 40 years. Last but not the least, show interest in,show respect for等。
12.During the extended holiday, Su Hua completed various tasks on schedule while Li Jiang failed to fulfill the requirements with regret. The obvious difference shows the great importance of self-discipline.
Self-discipline is one of the essential qualities that contribute effectively to a person’s progress. To begin with, it is evident that students with self-discipline tend to stay focused for a longer time, which enables them to attain their goals. Moreover, self-disciplined students are liable to resist various temptations and develop a higher sense of control, thus shaping their characters.
To cultivate self-discipline, one first needs to divide a great goal into small plans, which will help direct his efforts on a regular basis. Secondly, it is beneficial to measure his current behavior against past performance to keep him motivated, enhancing his self-discipline. Last but not least, there is one thing to keep in mind: One discipline leads to another discipline.
To begin with,Moreover, first,Secondly和Last but not least等衔接词,使得文章结构紧凑,层次分明;文中也使用了大量的从句和短语,从句如第二段中的it is evident that students with self-discipline tend to stay focused for a longer time, which enables them to attain their goals这句话中,既用了主语从句(it做形式主语,真正主语是后面的句子),也用了which引导的非限制性定语从句,短语有on schedule, contribute …to…,enable sb. to do sth.,be liable to和keep in mind等,都为文章增色不少。

Approaching the doorway, Lucy was very nervous and took a deep breath. Standing in front of the door, she was afraid whether her mother would forgive her for her rudeness. But when She thought of her mother’s familiar face and the noodle seller’s kind advice, she decided to knock on the door bravely. Her mother opened the door but Lucy was so ashamed that she didn’t know what to say.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. Lucy couldn’t help crying and said “Sorry, mom, I know I have made a big mistake. I shouldn’t have quarreled with you. I shouldn’t have run away from home. Could you forgive me ” Lucy’s mother was moved, saying “Good girl, never mind, I also should make an apology to you for scolding at you angrily. Pisano, now in his sixties, hugged Louise and patted her gently. Amid hugs, tears and surprise, Louise’s dream of finding her rescuers came true and now that she’d reunited with them, she hoped to stay connected forever.
