Unit 3 Environmental Protion
People feel good about recycling, maybe even more so when it comes to electronics. While electronics recycling isn't bad, making it a panacea(万能药) for the e-waste problem we currently have certainly is. Unfortunately, that's how we think of recycling — and companies to jump on that trend to appear more “green”.
A case in point: Apple. In 2016, there was lots of report on Liam, a robot able to dismantle(拆卸) an iPhone in just 11 seconds — a good way to recycle 1.2 million units a year. That sounds amazing until you take into account the fact that Apple had actually sold 231 million new iPhones the year before. Liam, actually, is the perfect symbol for recycling in the field of high-tech: a drop of green water in an ocean of pollution.
According to a recent UN report, the US produces about 6.3 million tons or 14% of the world's electronic waste. Worldwide, almost 45 million tons of electronic waste were produced in 2016. Among them, only 20% had been recycled in some shape or form. The remaining 80% made its way to a more environmentally damaging end at the landfill(垃圾填埋场).
Of course, we can say it's time to double our recycling efforts. However, the huge amount of e-waste is impossible to cope with. The UN report points out that while there is an increased focus on recycling today compared to the past, the effort to reuse used devices simply can't keep pace with the high consumption rates for new devices.
In their environmental responsibility report, Apple admits that 77% of the carbon footprint of their electronics comes from their manufacture, versus(相对于) 17% comes from its actual use. The environmental effect of replacing a device, even if it is recycled after, remains significant.
1.Which of the following can best describe Liam
A.It's useful but can't make a big difference.
B.It's energy-saving but too expensive.
C.It's well-made but won't become popular.
D.It's advanced but impractical.
2.What caused the e-waste recycling problem
A.Few high-tech companies.
B.Not enough recycling efforts.
C.High demand for new electronics.
D.Difficult recycling processes.
3.What does the author think of the electronics recycling
A.It is very effective.
B.It is quite good.
C.It is environmentally damaging.
D.It is far from “green” recycling.
4.What can be the best title for the text
A.A Recent UN Report on E-Waste Problem
B.The Limitation of Electronics Recycling
C.A Good Way to Cope With E-Waste
D.The Responsibility for Apple to Decrease E-Waste
To be clear, plastic bags are rightly thought of as a threat that's harmful to human health. According to the National Resources Defense Council, over a decade ago, the average American family took home almost 1,500 plastic shopping bags a year, filling our cabinets, kitchen drawers, and landfills Today the numbers are slightly better: According to National Geographic, as of 2018, shoppers in the United States use almost one plastic bag per resident per day.
This is not a story on the evil of plastics, but on whether the reusable bag can justify its existence. Although more environmentally friendly than traditional single-use plastic bags, reusable bags, depending on what they are made of, are more energy-intensive (耗能) to recycle.
According to a report by the United Nations Environment Program, “depending on what they are made of, reusable bags might have to be deconstructed in a costly recycling process to separate the different materials. As a result, in many cases, reusable bags are not recycled." That means despite the best intentions, millions of reusable bags designed to replace the need for traditional plastic shopping bags, will also end up in landfills.
Another point to consider, not all reusable bags are equal in terms of their recyclability. There are a wide range of reusable bag options on the market, and reusable bags tend to be made of more than one material to give the bag added reinforcement (耐用) and added street fashion. On a life cycle basis, stronger, heavier bags-no matter what material they are made of-will have a more severe environmental effect. That's because heavier bags use more resources to produce as well as distribute.
Just like plastic bags did, reusable bags multiply rapidly. Used for promotional (促销的)purposes and marketing of all kinds, reusable bags' growing popularity means bags that have been used very little (or not at all) can be found piled in streets, in garbage cans in city parks, and basically everywhere. Therefore, consumers have come to see them as disposable, defeating their very purpose.
In the end, the best practice for reusable bags is to have no half measures: Either use them all the time or don't use them at all. Using a reusable bag once or twice, and then throwing it away, doesn't do the environment any favors.
5.What can we learn from the passage
A.Plastic bags are refused by environmentalists.
B.Shops in America have limited the use of plastic bags.
C.The need of strong and fashionable reusable bags is more than the supply.
D.Reusable bags demand more resources to produce and recycle than expected.
6.The words “very purpose" in Paragraph 6 refer to the intention of __________.
A.being left in landfills
B.being used as much as possible
C.replacing plastic bags
D.promoting goods on the market
7.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.How to Recycle Reusable Bags
B.Disadvantages of Plastic Bags
C.Reusable Bags Think Twice!
D.Plastic Bags, Less Popular
8.Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage
I: Introduction CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point (次要点) C: Conclusion
A. B.
C. D.
Students at Huonville High School in Australia are riding bikes out of desire to fight climate change, carrying out a dizzyingly-thorough transformation of their school building into an energy efficient inspiration.
It’s paying off big time, as they’ve helped save $44, 000 in utility bills since they started their energy-saving project, but it’s also inspiring young people in the community. Recently the school won the Zayed Future Energy Prize of $133 ,000, some of which was used to turn a building into the Zayed Future Energy Hub, a clubhouse where 13 volunteers learn and teach about how renewable energy can be applied to our everyday lives.
Among all the efficiency adjustments, they set up solar panels on the roof, and replaced the old windows with double and triple glazed ones. They added improved insulation (隔热) and energy efficient curtains. They even have stationary bikes that create electricity to cook doughnuts.
The classroom was cold in the mornings, but the students wanted zero carbon emissions through their heating. So they went out and got a pellet stove, and then if that wasn’t enough, they went out and built a pellet mill (颗粒机) to make their fuel from waste sawdust.
Powering one small building on a high school campus or cooking doughnuts in renewable fat fryers is nice, but will do little on their own to slow global climate change. However, the Hub is much more about the big picture. Nel Smit, the volunteer teacher—head of the Hub, knows their biggest contribution is exciting the minds of the next generation.
“This little school in the Huon Valley is actually doing amazing things,” Smit said. “It’s raised awareness of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and opportunities in the community for engaging them around that sort of technology.”
9.What’s special about Huonville High School
A.It attaches importance to riding bikes. B.It promotes the idea of energy saving.
C.It encourages students to be creative. D.It is powered entirely by solar energy.
10.What can be learned about Zayed Future Energy Hub
A.It is a club center for volunteers. B.It is the place to produce energy.
C.It is built at the cost of $133,000. D.It is used to hold learning activities.
11.Why do students make fuel from waste sawdust
A.To save electricity bill. B.To keep low carbon emissions.
C.To get rid of waste sawdust. D.To test the pellet stove.
12.What is the greatest contribution of the project according to Smit
A.Saving a lot of energy. B.Creating more great minds.
C.Educating the next generation. D.Slowing global climate change.

As global fast-food chains and coffee shops begin phasing out(逐步淘汰) single-use plastic straws, McDonald’s China introduced a “strawless” lid(盖子) for cold beverages at 10 Beijing restaurants on Nov.1,2018.
Like many consumers, Wu Yanmei, a bank clerk in Beijing, had never thought about the impact a simple straw could have on the environment. “Actually, I don’t like using straws, but the cups at fast-food restaurants are all designed for use with a straw,” she said. “I don’t think straws are necessary, so the moves are a good way to raise people’s awareness of not using single-use plastic products.”
However, Jiang Jianguo, a professor of environmental studies at Tsinghua University, said he doubts such activities alone can have a major effect on the global pollution problem.“I don’t think the move by McDonald’s will be a success because previously there were lots of hotels calling for a ban on single-use plastics, but it ended in nothing because businesses compete by trying to make things convenient for consumers, ” he said.

1.A 2.C 3.D 4.B
Liam, actually, is the perfect symbol for recycling in the field of high-tech: a drop of green water in an ocean of pollution.
根据第四段the effort to reuse used devices simply can't keep pace with the high consumption rates for new devices.
Unfortunately, that's how we think of recycling — and companies to jump on that trend to appear more “green”. The environmental effect of replacing a device, even if it is recycled after, remains significant.
B. The Limitation of Electronics Recycling(电子产品回收的局限)为最佳标题。
推理判断题的题干特点:推断隐含意义的题干中常含infer(推断),suggest(暗示),imply(暗示),indicate(暗示),conclude(推断,得出结论)等词语。 We can know from the passage that...; We can infer from the (first/last) passage that... ;The passage/author implies/suggests that ...;It can be concluded from the passage that ... ;The underlined sentence indicates that ... Unfortunately, that's how we think of recycling — and companies to jump on that trend to appear more “green”. The environmental effect of replacing a device, even if it is recycled after, remains significant.
5.D 6.B 7.C 8.A
根据文章第二段末尾句内容“Although more environmentally friendly than traditional single-use plastic bags, reusable bags, depending on what they are made of, are more energy-intensive to recycle.( 虽然环保袋比传统的单次使用的塑胶袋更环保,但可再用的塑胶袋,视乎它们的成分而定,在循环使用上更耗能。)” According to a report by the United Nations Environment Program, “depending on what they are made of, reusable bags might have to be deconstructed in a costly recycling process to separate the different materials. As a result, in many cases, reusable bags are not recycled."( 根据联合国环境规划署(United Nations Environment Program)的一份报告,“可重复使用的袋子可能要经过成本高昂的回收过程才能被分解,以分离不同的材料,这取决于它们是由什么材料制成的。” D“Reusable bags demand more resources to produce and recycle than expected.( 可重复使用的袋子需要比预期更多的资源来生产和回收。)”
根据前文内容“Just like plastic bags did, reusable bags multiply rapidly. Used for promotional purposes and marketing of all kinds, reusable bags' growing popularity means bags that have been used very little (or not at all) can be found piled in streets, in garbage cans in city parks, and basically everywhere.( 就像塑料袋一样,可重复使用的袋子迅速繁殖。
文章末尾段落再次点明主旨“In the end, the best practice for reusable bags is to have no half measures: Either use them all the time or don't use them at all. Using a reusable bag once or twice, and then throwing it away, doesn't do the environment any favors.( 最后,使用环保袋的最佳做法是不要半途而废:要么一直使用,要么根本不使用。 Reusable Bags Think Twice!( 环保袋吗 三思而后行!)
Another point to consider, not all reusable bags are equal in terms of their recyclability(另一个需要考虑的问题是,并非所有可重复使用的袋子在可回收性方面都是平等的。) In the end, the best practice for reusable bags is to have no half measures: Either use them all the time or don't use them at all. 故选A项。
3.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.How to Recycle Reusable Bags
B.Disadvantages of Plastic Bags
C.Reusable Bags Think Twice!
D.Plastic Bags, Less Popular
A. Reusable Bags Think Twice!
根据文章第一段“Students at Huonville High School in Australia are riding bikes out of desire to fight climate change, carrying out a dizzyingly-thorough transformation of their school building into an energy efficient inspiration.(澳大利亚Huonville高中的学生们出于对抗气候变化的愿望而骑自行车,他们将学校建筑彻底改造成节能建筑。)”和文章第二段“It’s paying off big time, as they’ve helped save $44,000 in utility bills since they started their energy-saving project, but it’s also inspiring young people in the community.(这是一个巨大的回报,因为自从他们开始节能项目以来,他们已经帮助节省了44,000美元的水电费,但这也鼓舞了社区的年轻人。)”
根据文章第二段“Recently the school won the Zayed Future Energy Prize of $133,000, some of which was used to turn a building into the Zayed Future Energy Hub, a clubhouse where 13 volunteers learn and teach about how renewable energy can be applied to our everyday lives.(最近,这所学校赢得了13万3千美元的扎耶德未来能源奖,其中一部分被用于将一座建筑改造成扎耶德未来能源中心,这是一个俱乐部,13名志愿者在这里学习和教授如何将可再生能源应用到我们的日常生活中。)”
根据文章第四段“The classroom was cold in the mornings, but the students wanted zero carbon emissions through their heating. So they went out and got a pellet stove, and then if that wasn’t enough, they went out and built a pellet mill to make their fuel from waste sawdust.(早上的教室很冷,但学生们希望通过取暖实现零碳排放。
根据文章倒数第二段“Nel Smit, the volunteer teacher—head of the Hub, knows their biggest contribution is exciting the minds of the next generation.(中心的志愿教师负责人Nel Smit知道,他们最大的贡献是激发下一代的思维。)”

Though plastic straws can afford people great convenience, I think phasing them out in fast-food chains is advisable. First, plastics are a major source of pollution because they’re difficult to degrade. Therefore, phasing them out is greatly beneficial to the environment, such as reminding people of the urgency to protect the environment. Moreover, without straws, consumers can still have their drinks. So why must we equip each drink with a straw Why don’t we save such resources for other uses?Maybe, somewhere, the plastics saved can make a big difference to the society.
