五、阅读理解
A lot of kids have dreams they will never achieve due to the limitations of their little bodies. They want to fly, or to become a dinosaur, or to learn how to shoot webs out of their fingers like Spiderman.
Luka Tavcar, 12, has muscular dystrophy(萎缩) and is totally dependent on his wheelchair. Nevertheless, late last year, he had an inspired plan: to be photographed walking around and having fun.
He approached Matej Peljhan, an amateur photographer and a psychologist at CIRIUS rehabilitation(康复) center near Ljubljana, Slovenia, where Luka is a patient.
At first, Peljhan was perplexed. How could he photograph a boy who can not move or act in motion “Luka wanted to see himself playing and having fun, but it seemed impossible,” he says.
Then Peljhan had a brainstorm: Luka could lie down on a piece of cloth and, with the help of an assistant, Peljhan would pose the boy as if he were jumping, climbing stairs, moving downhill on a skateboard, and playing basketball. Then Peljhan would shoot these images from above. The photos took about a month to produce; all were shot early this year.
Peljhan, who lost his right arm and left eye as a child, says his disabilities motivated him to make the photographs. “I understand people with limitations,” he says.
He named the series the little Prince after the French story by Antoine de Saint-Exupery in which a boy teaches a man about trust, hope and friendship. Luka loves the photos.
Peljhan himself understands what it is like to live with limitations- he lost his right arm and left eye as a child. “He wants to stay positive,” the photographer explains. “Luka’s imagination helps him forget his phisical limitation”, says Peljhan. “He’s fragile, but he can see the world differently.”
29.What does the underlined word “perplexed” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Confused.
B.Annoyed.
C.Confident.
D.Disappointed.
30.What drove Peljhan to take pictures of Luka
A.The payment Luka offered.
B.Luka’s strong determination.
C.His own phisical limitations.
D.The friendship between the two.
31.According to the passage the pictures .
A.make Luka feel sad
B.make Luka stay positive
C.encourage Luka to do exercise
D.interest Luka in photographing
You may be surprised to learn that English gets 30 to 45 percent of its words from French. The reason goes back to the year 1066, when Norman forces invaded(入侵)what is now Britain. The Normans were from northern France and spoke French. During the Norman occupation, French became the language of England’s rulers and wealthy class. This lasted for more than 300 years. Other people in England continued to speak English during this period.
Over time, the two languages combined and shared words. Some researchers believe that about 10,000 French words eventually entered the English language. However, although English took many French words, their meanings have not always stayed the same. Sometimes the differences in meanings can be very important, and lead to funny or strange situations if the words are used in the wrong way.
Take, for example, the French word college. In English, college can often be used in place of the word university, or sometimes as a school within a university. However, in French, college actually means “middle school”, or the level of schooling for students in grades five or six through eight.
There are many other similar words in the two languages with completely different meanings. In English, the word chat is a verb which means “to talk casually”; but in French, the word chat is the word for an animal: a cat.
If an English speaker says someone is jolly, that means they are cheerful or friendly. But in French, jolie means someone is good-looking or pleasant to look at. In any case, both are nice things to say to someone.
32.What does the author stress about the French words in English
A.Their spelling forms. B.Their changes in history.
C.Their puzzles for English. D.Their different meanings.
33.What does a Frenchman mean if he says he likes a chat
A.He likes a kind of pet. B.He wants to have a talk.
C.He hates to speak English. D.He prefers to chat in French.
34.What is the French word “jolie” used to do
A.Replace “jolly” in English. B.Describe people's looks.
C.Refer to people’s happiness. D.Prove the change in French.
35.What is the text mainly about
A.Comparison between two languages. B.Difficulty in grasping English.
C.French words in English. D.Development of English.
America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness (礼貌) to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite (相反) of the practice in our country where we may be ___________ Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily activities. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!
36.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
A.Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.
B.Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.
C.Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.
D.Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.
37.From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______.
A.treated hospitably at his home
B.offered a ride to his home
C.warmly welcomed at the airport
D.treated to dinner in a restaurant
38.The underlined words “generous with our time” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ______.
A.strict with time B.serious with time
C.willing to spend time D.careful with time
39.A suitable title for this passage would probably be “______”.
A.Friendships between Chinese
B.Friendships between Americans
C.Americans’ hospitality
D.Americans’ and Chinese’s opinions of friendships
Vitamin B could help lessen the effects of the most dangerous type of air pollution, according to a new study published recently. In the first study of its kind,a team of international researchers looked at the damage caused by one of the pollutants that has the most severe impact on health: PM2.5.
Particulate matter,or PM,is a type of air pollutant consisting of small particles of different sizes. PM2.5 has a diameter of fewer than 2.5 micrometers, about 30 times smaller than a human hair. These particles are so small that they can go into our respiratory system (呼吸系统), resulting in lung and systemic inflammation (炎症) and stress.
The team found that something as simple as a daily vitamin B supplement could potentially reduce the impact of the tiny particles on the human body, although they stressed that the research was in its early stages and the sample size was small.
For this study,10 volunteers were initially exposed to clean air and given a placebo (安慰剂) to check their responses. The group then took another placebo for four weeks before being exposed to heavily polluted air from downtown Toronto, where an estimated 1,000 cars pass every hour. The bad air was delivered to the volunteers through an “oxygen-type” face mask. The experiment was then repeated, with each volunteer taking a vitamin B supplement daily made up of 2.5 mg of folic acid,50 mg of vitamin B6,and 1 mg of vitamin B12. B6 can be found in liver, chicken and nuts, and B12 in fish, meat, eggs, milk and some cereals.
The researchers found that four weeks of vitamin B supplements reduced the damage of PM2.5 exposure by 28%-76%. The results highlight how prevention at an individual level could be used to fight the harmful effects of PM2.5.
40.Why is PM2.5 harmful to our health
A.It pollutes and poisons the air. B.It is too much to be got rid of.
C.It carries viruses and diseases. D.It is easily breathed in and damages our body.
41.What can we infer from Paragraph 3
A.The process of the research was not scientific.
B.This kind of research has been done many times.
C.Further studies are needed to confirm their findings.
D.Vitamin B is hard to obtain in people’s daily life.
42.What is the text mainly about
A.International researchers have a new finding.
B.Vitamin B could reduce the damage of PM2.5.
C.Particulate matter does great harm to our health.
D.Emission control and regulation are badly needed.
43.The new study was probably published ________.
A.in a science journal B.on a government website
C.in a fashion magazine D.in a medical textbook

The United States is a vast country where there are four different time zones. In addition, many parts of the country observe daylight saving time (DST) as well. In areas that adopt DST, the clock is moved one hour forward for the summer. Thus, the local time varies across different areas of the country. ____44____ It has been changed many times over the years.
For decades, both the Eastern Time Zone and Central Time Zone have existed within the state. Many areas in the state have switched back and forth between Eastern Time and Central Time. Furthermore, until very recently, policy concerning DST differed from one place to another. ____45____ In 2006, however, the entire state started to observe DST.
Some have argued that the time system in Indiana harms local businesses working with companies outside of Indiana. For example,a company in Indiana once scheduled a phone conference with companies in other states. ____46____ This was because those who missed the conference did not know in which time zone the company was located.
____47____ Local businesses may benefit from being in the Eastern Time Zone where the financial center of the entire country, Wall Street in New York City, is located. Meanwhile, this may not be convenient for residents in the western parts of Indiana who commute (通勤) to major cities in the Central Time Zone, like Chicago, just across the state border.
The controversy over time in Indiana was partly resolved in 2006. ____48____ However, there is still disagreement about having two different time zones in the state. This debate may continue as long as people living in different parts of the state have different needs.
A.In other areas DST was adopted.
B.It is not easy to resolve this issue.
C.The entire state started to observe DST.
D.Only half of the participants were on line.
E.Most areas in the Eastern Time Zone did not adopt DST.
F.The state of Indiana is known for its complex time system.
G.It depends on which time zone the area is in and whether DST is adopted.

I hit the back window of a new car with a hammer. In a flash I was in. I started the car, just like my older brother had taught me. I was 12 then. It seems crazy now. Today, everyone knows me as Donald Driver, a famous football player. I've dedicated(致力于) my life after football to helping disadvantaged kids around the country.
Mom would have killed me if she'd known what I was up to. My dad had gone to prison while she was pregnant with me. Mom wanted a better life for me, my two brothers and two sisters. She worked long hours to support us. But she often fell behind on rent and then we'd have to move. Trouble really started when we moved next door to a man named J. R. Mom trusted him to care us while she was at work, and he did. What Mom didn't know was that J.R. and his friends were thieves.
My older brother Moses and I served as look-outs(放哨人).We knew it was wrong, but the money was too good- $ 100 a night. We broke it into smaller bills, and regularly slipped some into Mom's purse. Then Moses discovered we could bring in even more cash by stealing cars. We practiced giving the same smile, hug and kiss for my mom when we came home, no matter what we'd done on the streets.
Now, though, I was about to get caught. The police got closer. I turned into a back alley. Suddenly, up ahead, a car backed out of a driveway. I saw a little old lady sitting in the driver's seat. But it, was too late. I stopped and jumped out to see if the old lady was damaged. The woman, Evelyn Johnson, looked angry, but unhurt. “Go sit in my house right now,” she said. It was the tone of voice that no kid can disobey. The police arrived and began to question the old woman.
“The man who did this ran that way,” she said, pointing down the alley.

【原文】M: Do you know when and how bicycles began
Well, in the eighteenth century, cities became larger and larger. And people moved from the countryside and small towns to the cities because there was more work for them to do in the cities.
On Sundays and holidays, they liked to leave the cities and have a good time in the countryside. But not every family had a horse. So people needed a simpler means of transportation, and inventors in many countries tried to solve this problem. Therefore, the first bicycle, which was very simple, appeared in 1790 in France. People called it “the horse on wheels”, but it was difficult to ride and it also felt uncomfortable.
Then in 1861, after many improvements being made, bicycles became a practical means of transportation.
And people liked bicycles, because they were not as expensive as horses, and better still, they didn’t need to be fed. However, they could go anywhere and were easy to ride.

33.推理判断题。根据第三段中In English, the word chat is a verb which means “to talk casually”; but in French, the word chat is the word for an animal: a cat.可知,如果一个法国人说他喜欢a chat,他的意思是“他喜欢一种宠物。”,因为在法语里chat是cat的意思,故选A。
