Tom: Well, I know one. It's called The Emperor's New Clothes. This story is about an emperor who loved clothes. He loved buying and looking at his beautiful clothes.
Mei Ling: So what happened
Tom: Two brothers came to the city to make special clothes for the emperor. But the emperor had to give them silk and gold.
Mei Ling: Were the clothes nice
Tom: Well, the brothers kept everything for themselves and told the emperor that people couldn't see the clothes unless they were clever.
Mei Ling: Oh, so they were really trying to cheat the emperor!
Tom: Yes, you are right. When the emperor looked at himself, he only saw his underwear. But he didn't want people to think he was stupid, so he said his new clothes were very beautiful.

gold 还可作形容词,意为“金色的”,相当于 golden。其区别为 gold 只用于名词前作定语,golden 既可作定语,还可作表语。
eg:He is wearing a gold/golden jacket today.

Leaves turn golden in autumn.树叶在秋天变成金色。
2. Nobody wanted to sound stupid. (教材P45 1c)
eg:Nobody knows what will happen. 没人知道会发生什么。
nobody 在此处作不定代词,意为“没有人”,相当于 no one,作主语时谓语动词用第三人称单数形式。
nobody 还可作名词,表示“小人物”,指无足轻重的人。
eg:We shouldn’t look down on anybody, even if he is a nobody.
我们不应该瞧不起任何人,即使他是个无名小卒。
3. They were trying to cheat the emperor. (教材P45 1c)
cheat在此处作动词,意为“欺骗;蒙骗”。cheat sb. (out) of sth. (尤指用不诚实或不正当的手段)阻止某人得到某物“。
eg:Merchants should not cheat their customers. 商家不应该欺骗顾客。
He cheated his aged aunt out of her fortune.
他骗走了年迈的姑姑的财产。
cheat还可作名词,意为“骗子”。
eg:One day tow cheats came to see the emperor.
