We were in our late 20s with a child when my husband, Ralph, finally graduated from college.
“OK, now I deserve a piano,” I blurted out when he sat down for lunch just before the graduation ceremony. A look of surprise crossed his face.
“We could never afford a piano. After so many years of hard work, we got you through school. Now I deserve a piano,” I repeated.
Several months later, Ralph, with help, moved the upright piano we bought for $ 100 into our cottage’s tiny arched dining room. It smelled a little musty, but had great tone.
Ralph started graduate school, leaving no money for private piano lessons. The first thing that came to my mind was Santa Monica City College—maybe it offered piano lessons. Skimming the catalog, I danced around the room when I found a class at the same time the boys were at preschool.
Practicing, however, was not so easy. Four-year old redheaded Denny crawled out of bed in the evening on a regular basis. That was my time to practice. He’d pad out of the bedroom in his sleeper and climb up on the bench with me. Soon he began plinking (发出叮铃声) on the high keys. I tried to ignore him. He listened to the echoes of the keys and plinked some more. Doing all I could do to keep focused on my own practicing, I continued to ignore him.
This practice pattern became an evening routine. After a while, I didn’t even hear him anymore. Ralph studied. Denny plinked on the high keys, and I focused on my piece for the end-of-the-term recital (独奏会).
That evening came. However, Ralph said he was busy preparing for the midterms and couldn’t watch Denny.
Pacing back and forth, I shook my head trying to figure out what to do. Time was running out. I bundled up Denny—with his sleeper on—and drove off to the recital with him.
“We’ll sit in the front row, Denny,” I whispered. “You have to be very quiet and listen when I am playing.” He nodded, said “Uh-huh,” and we sat down.

Julia always enjoyed running through The Dark Walk towards the light at the end of it. It was a dark, damp tunnel (隧道) made of smooth branches. This year she had the extra joy of showing it to her small brother, Stephen, and terrifying him as well as herself.
One day they found a hole on one side of the walk. Inside there was water, in which they perceived a panting trout(喘息的鳟鱼). They were both so excited that they were no longer afraid of the darkness as they bent down and peered at the fish panting in his tiny prison, his silver stomach going up and down like an engine; otherwise he was motionless. Julia wondered what he ate and thought of his hunger. She found him a worm. He ignored the food, and just went on panting. Bending over him, she thought how he had been in there. All the winter, in the dark tunnel, all day, all night, floating around alone.
Nobody knew how the fish got there. Her mother suggested that a bird had carried the egg. Her father thought that in the winter a small stream might have carried it down there as a baby, and it has been safe until summer came and the water began to dry up.
Before they went to bed, Stephen asked his mummy the whole story of the trout, not really interested in the actual trout, but in the story which his mum began to make up for him, and Julia, in her bed, presented her back to them and read her book. But she kept one ear cocked. "And so, in the end, this naughty fish got bigger and bigger, and the water got smaller and smaller..." Passionately, she turned around and cried, "Mummy, don't make it a horrible old moral story." Her mom even brought in a fairy(仙子),who had made it rain and filled the hole, so that the trout could float away down to the river below. Staring at the moon she knew there was no such thing as a fairy and that trout, down in the tunnel, was panting for his life.

My best friend Carla Hernandez called me on Thursday afternoon. "Daniel, meet me in the park near the playground in five minutes. I have a great idea!" This worried me because Carla's great ideas almost always meant big trouble for me!
I dashed outside and jogged to the park. When I saw Carla, my heart sank because her large dog Perro was with her. I liked everything about Carla except Perro. I had never had a pet in my house, and I felt uncomfortable and nervous around animals. But I was embarrassed to say I was afraid of Carla's dog.
Upon my arrival, Carla smiled in a joyful voice. "Isn't this the perfect location for a pet show " I was surprised at her words. Carla explained to me that all the kids in the neighborhood could show off their pets' talents and demonstrated the things they did well. Besides, there were plenty of comfortable benches for our parents and friend to sit on as audience. Carla added that I could be the announcer since I didn't have a pet for the show. What she said directly affected my mood because crowds always made me nervous and unsure. Looking into her eyes, I apologized, "I'm sorry, but that's impossible! Besides, I don't like animals, remember "
"That's nonsense, " said Carla. "There's nothing to be concerned about because you'll be great!" Just at that time, Perro leaped up, slobbered all over me, and almost knocked me down. "Yuck. Down, Perro! Stay!"l shouted. Perro sat as still as a statue. "Wow, you're good at that, " Carla raised her voice excitedly. "Now let's get started because we have a lot to do. "
With her encouragement, I decided to have a try. After going back home, I couldn't wait to practise announcing each pet's act. By Saturday morning I had practiced hundreds of times. However, my stomach was doing flip flops by the time the audience arrived at the park. The size of the crowd made me feel even more anxious.

I'm not going to say storms are good, because I know what they've stolen from people.
But my story is of a storm that gave me more than I'd thought to ask for.
The tornado(龙卷风) blew through on a Sunday. We were visiting grandparents in Raleigh then, unaware that seventy miles away the big tree in our front yard was tearing through our roof and destroying the kitchen.
When we returned, we saw Rosica's father and brothers in our yard, gathering debris(碎片) and using a chain saw to cut the thickest branches of the fallen tree, though we barely knew them then. They were covered in sweat and dirt.
My mom didn't seem to notice how happy they were to help us because the first thing she said was “Oh, you don't need to be doing all that work!”Mr. Flores laughed. “Claro! Of course, we don't. But more importantly, you cannot sleep in that house e and speak to my wife. She'll help you figure out what to do. ”My mom doesn't usually let people tell her what to do, but she sighed(叹气) deeply as she took in the sight of our home in the failing light, reached for my hand, and followed our neighbor to their house.
The Flores family lived across the street. Their home was the same size as ours but housed three generations. Rosica was my age. I knew her name and face, but since she was new to our school, and had a different teacher than I did, we had never spoken. It was she who answered the door. “Mama is changing the sheets on the bed for you, and there's some lemon cheesecake on the table. ”
“Please don't trouble yourself. I think I'd call a hotel and see about a room, ”my mom said, more uneasy than usual. Mrs. Flores came down the stairs and smiled at us warmly, “Your room is ready. I know it's more encouraged to give than receive, but allow yourself to receive a place to stay, and allow us the chance to give you something you need!”

When I adopted him, he had been rescued from death inside a tightly tied black trash bag abandoned right beside a garbage truck on the road. An alert garbage man noticed the bag moving and used a metal rake (耙子) to tear open the bag to look inside. There was my shaking puppy dog. The rake damaged the nerves in his back so he limped a little, but he could run as fast as lightning.
For my dog's first birthday, I entered him in a fun run sponsored by our local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Tm not much of a runner, but the run was only 3 kilometers, so I thought it would be fun for both of us.
We practiced for weeks. On our practice runs, he was always eager to go and usually dragged me along behind him. I worked on his leash (拴狗链) manners so that he wouldn't trip me on the big day. I felt we were ready for anything.
The fun run was downtown among the big buildings, so the noise of barking dogs all around us rose to a deafening pitch at the start of the race. My dog was frightened when the starting tone went off. He had trouble running in the right direction with all the confusion around us. Soon the runners began to thin out, and my dog was running straight and fast. We were passing people and making great time. I was dreaming of a gold-medal finish.
However, when we were six blocks from the finish, my dog suddenly stopped and dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes. 1 almost dislocated my shoulder from the sudden stop as I was pulled backward by the leash.
He was lying flat on his belly with his head down in the middle of the crossroads. At first I thought something bad had happened to him. He was shaking and sobbing. I did a quick check and couldn't see anything wrong. I tried to get him up, but he refused. The police officer doing traffic control impatiently signed me to move away so he could release the cars.

【答案】I told Danny it was my turn to play, be good, and be quiet when I play, and I'll come back to you when I'm done. He nodded and said I would be good, but I looked at Danny hesitantly and walked straight to the stage to begin my play. I want to give the audience my best. I was so absorbed in my performance that I forgot Danny was offstage.
I was playing to my heart's content, and I saw Danny climbing onto my piano stool, next to me. He was very quiet there. He didn't make a sound. He watched me play. My hanging heart calmed down and I focused more on my playing. Far from freaking me out, the arrival of the baby gave me a great deal of confidence, and I managed to complete my solo without a problem. When I finished, there was thunderous applause and I picked up my little Danni to thank the audience and waved off the stage.

She sat up in the silent night and Stephan was sound asleep. She tiptoed out, quietly lifted a large pot of water and ran to the opening of the tunnel. Inside was complete darkness! Scared but determined, she raced in, knelt down by the hole, and put he r hand into it. The trout lashed and they were both mad with fright. Still she managed to shove him into the pot and raced out of the tunnel and down the steep paths. All t he way his tail was lashing against the pot. Finally, she reached the riverbank. (85 w ords)
Julia poured the trout out of the pot into the river. For the first seconds the somewhat dizzy creature was still visible in the water. Then all she saw was the faint light of the moon in the silent-flowing river. In relief, she trotted back home, dropped down the pot, and flew through the air like a bird into bed. Soon she fell asleep, satisfied and peaceful. The next morning Stephen rushed to her, shouting that “he” was gone and as king "where" and "how". Lifting her nose in the air, she proudly laughed, “A fairy, I suppose "(87 words)

【答案】
When the show began, I took a deep breath and announced the first pet. It was a bird named Butter whose talent was walking back and forth on a wire. When Butter finished, everyone clapped and cheered. So far, everything was perfect. I was beginning to feel calmer and more relaxed. I realized that being an announcer was not so bad after all.
Then it was Carla and Perro's turn. Carla asked Perro to sit, but Perro didn't sit. Carla was at a loss what to do next. Perro was too interested in watching so many pet friends at the show. Suddenly, Perro broke free from the rope, leaped quickly and knocked over the bird cage.“Sit!”I shouted at Perro.“Stay!”I cried. Suddenly, everyone stopped and stared at me. Hearing my instructions, Perro sat immediately and looked at me."Wow, amazing!" said Carla. He smiled at me and gave me a thumb-up. I felt so happy and proud.

But I couldn’t get my seventy-five-pound dog to get up. The harder I tried to scoop him up from the pavement, the more he fought me. The officer yelling and cars honking, I pulled him with all my might, but in vain. Finally, I got my arm under him and lifted him up in a fireman’s carry, throwing him over my shoulder. As I staggered to the roadside, people around were taking my dog’s side, laughing I was running him too hard. I was fuming. My dog would run all day long and he wasn’t the least bit tired.
Another half-block of carrying him brought the answer — a moving garbage truck. Its sound must have hit my dog’s sensitive ears, so he cried louder and clawed at my back as we drew closer to it. I held on tighter and ran as fast as I could to get my sweet baby dog away from that scary garbage truck. I ran with him on my shoulder until I felt him relaxed, and then I set him down. He wagged his tail in gratitude for saving him from the garbage truck. Surely, we didn’t win any medals, but I won his trust forever.
