Anyone interested in easy ways to make a positive impact on their communities need look no further than 12-year-old Danykah Muck, a Michigan middle-schooler whose simple learning project is an inspiration to positive thinkers of any age. It all started with her way to school every school day. Every morning she would greet an old man in her neighborhood, who she still doesn't know his name, smiling or even simply offering a friendly word "hello". And he would always nod and smile back. "It seems to considerably change the emotional energy around me in the community," She noticed this in both directions, "That simple act can both change our entire day with how they greet me."
Last spring, Muck brought an idea to her teachers. She provided them with a pile of sticky notes she had filled with brief—sometimes one-word—positive messages. She then asked the teachers to place the notes on students' desks before they arrived at school the next day. She also gave pre-filled sticky notes to the lunch staff and to school administrators including the principal. The idea was to make it easy for teachers, staff and students to regularly encounter reminders that they matter and are valued. "You are enough just being you," reads one favorite note. Muck's idea could be just the thing in an office, assisted living facility or even at home for a small family.
"Low-cost" positive interactions, like a friendly word offered to the postal worker or coffee shop servant, are shown by psychology researchers to build sympathy and abate loneliness. An anonymous note sent into someone's inbox or stuck to their front door is perhaps the lowest-cost connection there is, with potential benefits beyond our imagination. Sometimes the smallest encouragements have the biggest impact. What would you say on a sticky note to share with someone in your community
4.What message does paragraph 1 convey
A.Middle-schoolers are friendly to the elderly.
B.A simple act of kindness makes a difference.
C.A community can be easily shaped by interest.
D.Learning projects can inspire positive thinkers.
5.How did Muck help people in her school
A. By writing thank-you letters. B.By means of sticking notices.
C.By talking with school leaders. D.By writing encouraging words.
6.What does the underlined word "abate" probably mean
A.Measure. B.Monitor. C.Ease. D.Stand.
7.The best title for the text is probably ______.
A.What a friendly word means to a stranger
B.Never be bothered by negative thoughts
C.Brighten the community with positivity
D.How to build a harmonious community
【答案】4.B
5.D
6.C
7.C
It seems to considerably change the emotional energy around me in the community”这似乎在很大程度上改变了我在社区里的情绪能量;以及"That simple act can both change our entire day with how they greet me”这个简单的举动可以通过他们问候我的方式改变我们的一整天。
She provided them with a pile of sticky notes she had filled with brief—sometimes one-word—positive messages.”
Low-cost' positive interactions, like a friendly word offered to the postal worker or coffee shop servant, are shown by psychology researchers to build sympathy”心理学研究人员发现,"低成本"的积极互动,比如对邮政工作人员或咖啡店服务员说一句友好的话,可以建立同情心。
It seems to considerably change the emotional energy around me in the community,' She noticed this in both directions, 'That simple act can both change our entire day with how they greet me.'”
Some time ago, in my class I was about to fail a student for his answer to a physics question when the student claimed he deserved a better score. The examination question sounded "safe".
"Show how it is possible to determine the height of a tall building with the aid of a barometer (压表)." The student had answered: "Take the barometer to the top of the building, attach a long rope to it, lower the barometer to the street, and then bring it up, measuring the length of the rope. The length of the rope is the height of the building."
I argued that a high grade should prove his competence in physics, but the answer did not confirm this. I suggested that the student have another try. Immediately, he worked out his answer: A second best way is to take the barometer to the top of the building. Drop the barometer, timing its fall with a stopwatch. Then, using the formula to calculate the height of the building.
I was shocked by his answer. His method gave me not only a broken barometer but a U-turn in my teaching philosophy. I gave him full marks.
On his leaving my office, I recalled that he suggested there could be a better answer. So I asked him what it was. "Oh, yes," said the student, "There are many ways. Probably the best," he said, "is to take the barometer to the basement and ask the superintendent (楼管). You speak to him as follows: Mr. Superintendent, here I have a fine barometer. If you tell me the height of this building, I will give it to you.
At this point, I asked the student if he really did not know the conventional answer to this question. He admitted that he did, but said that he was fed up with high school instructors' trying to teach him how to think, and to use the so-called "scientific method". He just wanted to solve the problem in a practical manner, not just answer the question in an expected way. Hearing this, I really had nothing to do but give the boy a firm handshake, feeling thankful that I hadn't failed him in the first place and even more thankful, neither had he.
8.Why did the author want to fail the student in the first place
A.The student challenged his authority.
B.The student's answer was not practical.
C.The student didn't show his academic ability.
D.The student had a poor performance in physics class.
9.Which of the following can best describe the author's new teaching philosophy
A.Without love there is no education.
B.A man becomes learned by asking questions.
C.Teaching is to make two ideas grow where only one grew before.
D.You can lead your horse to the river, but you can't make it drink.
10.What made the student abandon the conventional answer
A.Lack of physics-related knowledge.
B.Ignorance of the teacher's expectation.
C.Intention to deeply impress his teacher.
D.Disapproval of existing teaching concepts.
11.What can we infer from the text
A.The superintendent was a greedy person.
B.School education restricted this student's thinking.
C.The teacher appreciated the student's answers finally.
D.The examination question is a lough physics problem.
【答案】8.C
9.C
10.D
11.C
Some time ago, in my class I was about to fail a student for his answer to a physics question when the student claimed he deserved a better score.
根据第三段中的“I suggested that the student have another try. Immediately, he worked out his answer: A second best way is to take the barometer to the top of the building. Drop the barometer, timing its fall with a stopwatch. Then, using the formula to calculate the height of the building ”我建议这个学生再试一次。 然后使用公式去计算这个房屋的高度;以及第四段中的“I was shocked by his answer. His method gave me not only a broken barometer but a U-turn in my teaching philosophy.”
根据最后一段中的“ He admitted that he did, but said that he was fed up with high school instructors' trying to teach him how to think, and to use the so-called‘scientific method’. He just wanted to solve the problem in a practical manner, not just answer the question in an expected way.
Hearing this, I really had nothing to do but give the boy a firm handshake, feeling thankful that I hadn't failed him in the first place and even more thankful, neither had he."

Meat is crucial for feeding the planet, leading scientists have said, as they warned it is not more environmentally-friendly to go vegan (素食).
Prof. Geoff Simm, Director of Global Academy Agriculture and Food Security at the University of Edinburgh, said, "I think livestock (家畜) farmers do feel they are being demonized (妖魔化)." Often the argument is made that going vegan would minimize land use, but the modelling studies that have been done demonstrate that's not the case. We feel that while livestock production has a range of economic, social and environmental costs and benefits, the costs have perhaps been receiving far more attention recently than some of the benefits. Meat has massive social benefits. It's an important source of dietary protein, energy, highly bioavailable micronutrients (微量营养素), even small amounts of animal-sourced food have a really important effect on the development of children, in the developing world on their cognitive and physical development and they are really important.
Prof. Mike Coffey, from Scotland's Rural College, added, "It's completely unnecessary to go vegan. If everybody went vegan it would be devastating for the UK environment. Animals bred for food help boost biodiversity."
Researchers are currently attempting to breed more environmentally friendly cattle which grow faster and eat less, which could further reduce the sector's carbon footprint by reducing the amount of methane (甲烷) released by cows.
Prof. Coffey said that the difference in methane emissions from best and worst cattle was about 30 percent and that if all UK farmers used the most efficient animals this could reduce carbon emissions by nearly a third. But Prof. Coffey said the next stage will be trying to measure the methane given off by different breeds of cattle to find which are the lowest emitters. Prof. Coffey said that soon shoppers could be able to check meat labels to find out how much environmental impact their food has had. He added, "My expectation is that at some point in the near future there will be product labels that relates to the efficiency or carbon impact of the food."
Professor Andrea Wilson, also of Edinburgh University, said more research was needed into the impact of veganism She added, "We know a lot about the livestock sector because people have looked at it. We actually know very little about the vegan sector. The danger is we demonize one and jump too quickly to the other."
12.Why are livestock farmers being demonized
A.Because livestock production has huge costs.
B.Because livestock meat contains harmful protein.
C.Because livestock need more land and emit polluting gases.
D.Because livestock meat negatively affect children's development.
13.What's the writer's purpose of mentioning labeling different breeds of cow
A.To state a fact. B.To make a prediction.
C.To present a solution. D.To explain a phenomenon.
14.What is the author's attitude towards veganism
A.Supportive. B.Intolerant. C.Indifferent. D.Doubtful.
15.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Going vegan is not greener.
B.Consuming meat is harmful.
C.Raising cows is environmentally friendly.
D.Criticizing livestock farmers is not wise.
【答案】12.C
13.C
14.D
15.A
Often the argument is made that going vegan would minimize land use, but the modelling studies that have been done demonstrate that's not the case.“通常,人们认为素食主义会减少土地使用,但已经完成的建模研究表明,事实并非如此;以及倒数第三段"Researchers are currently attempting to breed more environmentally friendly cattle, which grow faster and eat less, which could further reduce the sector's carbon footprint by reducing the amount of methane (甲烷) released by cows.”
Prof. Coffey said that soon shoppers could be able to check meat labels to find out how much environmental impact their food has had. He added,‘My expectation is that at some point in the near future there will be product labels that relates to the efficiency or carbon impact of the food.’"
Prof. Mike Coffey, from Scotland's Rural College, added, "It's completely unnecessary to go vegan. If everybody went vegan it would be devastating for the UK environment. Animals bred for food help boost biodiversity." Professor Andrea Wilson, also of Edinburgh University, said more research was needed into the impact of veganism She added, ‘We know a lot about the livestock sector because people have looked at it. We actually know very little about the vegan sector. The danger is we demonize one and jump too quickly to the other.’"
Meat is crucial for feeding the planet, leading scientists have said, as they warned it is not more environmentally-friendly to go vegan (素食).” 故选A。

Keeping curious kids from disrupting wildlife
Interacting with the wild, naturally curious kids tend to collect seashells at the beach or keep small wildlife as pets. 16. So how to help kids protect the wild while enjoying spending time outsides Here are alternatives for some of the most common outdoor behavior no-nos.
Take an interest, not things. Kids show interest in picking flowers, rocks, or shells outdoors. They're part of wildlife's habitat and play an important role. 17. Let kids explore with a magnifying glass (放大镜)instead of their curious fingers. Let whatever they find outside stay outside.
 18. It seems a fun idea to throw pieces of bread to ducks. Animals have unique dietary needs that are different from humans. Eating human food can make them sick or become dependent on human food. Bears are an example of animals that often have to be killed after developing a taste for human food.
Admire animal afar, not disrupt nearby. The urge to take a photo with a squirrel, bird, or slow-moving turtle can be strong for kids. 19. Instead, remind kids to stay away and show them how to use a camera's zoom button, or just admire with their eyes.
Take well-worn paths, not off-road romps (嬉戏). Kicking piles of leaves, stepping on bushes, and walking through forested areas can unintentionally scare wildlife. If surprised animals defend their homes, everyone could get hurt. Nobody likes having a guest come in and destroy their home and act rudely. 20.
A. Keep snacks away from animals.
B. Share food if animals are hungry.
C. Exposure to them develops kids' love and curiosity.
D. The same rule applies to visiting wildlife in their homes.
E. Animals rely on plants for hiding; rocks and shells, for homes.
F. Approaching animals disrupts what they do for survival, such as eating.
G. Despite innocent purposes, kids' curiosity accidentally damages the wild.

ALEX pedaled his bike along the country lane that led to his house. As he rounded a bend, the tips of the cattails that grew around Johnson's Pond came into view. His dad took him canoeing there sometimes, and Alex loved it. The pond was always so alive with activity. Frogs croaked along the shore, dragonflies hunted among the cattails, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles(乌龟) basking(晒太阳) on sunny rocks.
Alex was curious about the turtles he saw. One week, when it was too rainy to go canoeing, he and his dad went to the library to check out books on turtles. Alex learned that turtles don't have warm blood like people do. That's why they have to sit in the sun to warm themselves. Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day. He decided he would ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again.
Just then Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be.
And then, as Alex watched, the rock started to move.
When he rode his bike up to get a closer look, he saw that it wasn't a rock at all. It was a large turtle crawled its way across the road. It had a bony, beak-shaped mouth and a long, jagged tail. Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle.
He also knew not to get too close. He had read that a snapping turtle has a powerful bite even though it doesn't have teeth. It could even bite off someone's finger. He stood at a distance and watched the turtle move slowly over the road.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching. The turtle was still only halfway across the road. Alex knew he couldn't pick it up to move it safely to the grass. What could he do
注意:
1)续写词数应为150词左右;
Thinking fast, he started jumping up and down and waving both hands wildly.
……
To make the warning sign, Alex hurried back home and started his work with some leftover wood and paint.
One possible version:
Thinking fast, he started jumping up and down and waving both hands wildly. "Stop! Stop!" he cried. The car slowed to a stop, and the driver stuck his head out of the window with a puzzled look. Alex darted forward and pointed at the moving turtle. "I'm just trying to save it." he explained. With an understanding smile, the driver applauded his efforts. Seeing the car pulling away, Alex was lost in deep thoughts. "Maybe I could put up a sign to warn people there were turtles crossing the road," he said to himself.
To make the sign, Alex hurried back home and found some leftover wood and paint. He hammered nails into the wood to make a flat board, after which he painted a vivid picture of a turtle in the middle and added "Slow! Turtles Crossing" at the bottom. He had completed all his work when Dad arrived home, who offered to carry the sign to the spot. Together they fixed the sign into the ground by the side of the road. With their work done, they both breathed a sigh of relief and headed home with great satisfaction.
