(1) 引导词
when, while, as这三个词都是从属连词，引导时间状语从句。当意为“当.....时候”，并与延续性动词连用时，三者可以互换，但含义和用法上有所区别。when 意为“当....时候”(相当于at that time)，可与延续性动词或短暂性动词连用，既可指某一点时间，也可指某一段时间，主句动作和从句动作可同时发生或从句动作发生在主句动作之前。while 意为“当....时候”时，作从属连词，强调一段时间，只与延续性动词连用，侧重于表示主句和从句动作同时发生;意为“然而”时，为并列连词，连接两个并列句。as意为 “一边.....一边....”，与延续性动词连用，侧重于表示主句和从句动作同时发生，强调伴随状态。如:Tony was watching TV when someone knocked at the door. 当有人敲门时，托尼正在看电视。Don't talk while the teacher is writing on the blackboard. 当老师在黑板上写字时不要讲话。Jane was listening to music while Lily was dancing. 当莉莉在跳舞时，简在听音乐。John likes reading as he walks. 约翰喜欢一边走路边看书。when和while 有时可以互换。如:汤姆在玩电脑游戏时，他的父亲进来了。Tom was playing computer games when his father came in.While Tom was playing computer games, his father came in.
until, not until until 意为“直到...为止”，主句的谓语动词常用延续性动词。not ... until ... 意为“直到...才...”, 主句的谓语动词常用短暂性动词。如:Jenny won't go until all the other students leave the classroom. 直到其他学生都离开教室后，詹妮才会走。
after, before, as soon as after 意为“在....之后”，引导从句表示: 主句动作发生在从句动作之后。before 意为“在...之前”，引导的从句表示: 主句动作发生在从句动作之前。as soon as意为 “一....就....”， 引导的从句表示从句动作一发生， 主句动作随即就发生。如:Denny went back home after he finished cleaning the classroom. = Denny finished cleaning the classroom before he went back home. = Denny didn't go back home until he finished cleaning the classroom.丹尼打扫完教室后才回家。As soon as the heavy rain stops, the students will go home. 大雨一停，学生们就会回家。
时态
当主句为一般过去时的时候，从句常用过去的某种时态。如:While Tina was cleaning the room, Mr. Brown passed by. 当蒂娜在打扫房间时，布朗先生刚好经过。
② 当主句为一般将来时的时候，从句用一般现在时，即主将从现原则。如:Rose will visit her friend as soon as she arrives there. 罗斯一到那儿就要去看她的朋友。
