The scientific study of earthquakes is comparatively new. Until the 18th century, few factual descriptions of earthquakes were recorded, and the natural causes of earthquakes were not well understood.
The earliest earthquake for which we have descriptive information occurred in China in 1177 BC. The Chinese earthquake catalog (目录) describes several dozen large earthquakes in China during the next few thousand years. Earthquakes in Europe were mentioned as early as 580 BC, but the earliest for which we have some descriptive information occurred in the mid-16th century. The earliest known earthquakes in the Americas were in Mexico in the late 14th century and in Peru in 1471, but descriptions of the effects were not well recorded. By the 17th century, descriptions of the effects of earthquakes were being published around the world.
The most widely felt earthquakes in the recorded history of North America were a series that occurred in 1811-1812 near New Madrid, Missouri. A great earthquake, whose magnitude is reported to have been about 8, occurred on the morning of December 16, 1811. Another great earthquake occurred on January 23, 1812, and a third, the strongest yet, on February 7, 1812. Aftershocks (余震) were nearly continuous between these great earthquakes and continued for months afterwards. These earthquakes were felt by people as far away as Boston and Denver. Because the population in these regions was small, the destruction of human life and property was slight.
The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was one of the most destructive in the recorded history of North America——the earthquake and the fire that followed killed nearly 700 people and left the city in ruins.
1. When did published descriptions of the effects of earthquakes become popular in the world
A. In the 1300s.
B. In the 1400s.
C. In the 1500s.
D. In the 1600s.

A. They killed a large number of people.
B. They occurred in San Francisco.
C. They could be felt very far away.
D. They almost destroyed entire cities.
3. What can we infer from the passage
A. Few earthquakes were scientifically studied before the 18th century.
B. Earthquakes can be avoided with the development of technology.
C. Most of the early earthquakes caused little damage.
D. People haven't found the causes of earthquakes so far.
4. What's the best title for this passage
A. The scientific study of earthquakes
B. Earthquakes in history
C. The effects of earthquakes on humans
D. Why earthquakes occur
The Science of Earthquakes
①__________
The surface of the earth is divided into different pieces. These are called tectonic plates When two plates suddenly slip past one another, an earthquake happens. This shakes the ground and everything on it.
What cause earthquakes and where do they happen
②__________They are inner core, outer core, mantle (地幔) and the earth's crust (地壳). The crust and the top of the mantle make up a think skin on the surface of the planet. But this skin is not all in one piece. It is actually made up of many tectonic plate. They are like puzzle pieces. These pieces are always sliding around and bumping into each other. Sometimes their edges get stuck together. When this happens, the rest of the plate keeps moving. Eventually the edges come unstuck.③__________.
Why does the earth shake when there is an earthquake
Earthquakes send out waves in all directions. When they reach the earth's surface, they shake the ground. ④__________The P wave squeezes and stretches the earth. The S wave shake it up and down.
⑤__________.
Scientists use special tools to record and measure earthquakes. These tools are called seismographs. Recordings from seismographs tell scientists when and where an earthquake took place. They can also tell scientists the size of an earthquake.
A. How are earthquakes recorded
B. That is when an earthquake happens.
C. There are different types of earthquake waves.
D. What is an earthquake
E. The earth has four main layers (层).
F. Can scientists predict earthquakes
G. Scientists can tell where an earthquake took place by studying the P and S waves.
2.答案:Compared

二、
答案:1-4 DCAB
D 根据第二段最后一句 "By the 17th century, descriptions of the effects of earthquakes were being published around the world."
2. C 根据第三段中的 "These earthquakes were felt by people as far away as Boston and Denver."
Until the 18th century, few factual descriptions of earthquakes were recorded..."
The surface of the earth is divided into different pieces. They are called tectonic plates (构造板块). When two plates suddenly slip past one another, an earthquake happens. This shakes the ground and everything on it."
They are the inner core, outer core, mantle (地幔) and the earth's crust (地壳)."
These pieces are always sliding around and bumping into each other. Sometimes their edges get stuck together. When this happens, the rest of the plate keeps moving. Eventually the edges come unstuck."
The P wave squeezes and stretches the earth. The S wave shakes it up and down."
Scientists use special tools to record and measure earthquakes. These tools are called seismographs. Recording from seismographs tells scientists when and where an earthquake took place. It can also tell scientists the size of an earthquake."
