1. Inspired by a 9-year-old cyclist, Lauren Turner, who can only use one hand, a group of University of Guelph students has won an international award for their invention— a bike brake lever(刹车手柄) that pulls both the front brake and the back brake at the same time.
Lauren Turner was able to ride her bike, but not as confidently and quickly as her friends.
"She couldn't use the front brake. She only used the back brake, but the front brake makes you stop twice as fast," says Micha Wallace, who, with Katie Bell, Anina Sakaguchi and Andrew Monies won second prize in the James Dyson Award for their single-handed bike brake lever."
Lauren Turner tried the device(装置) first and she used it all last summer. She had no problems. It helped her go faster because she felt more confident in her braking abilities. She felt safer." says Wallace.
The invention was the fourth-year design project for the four students. They designed, tested and created a prototype(原型) within a four-month period.
When Wallace heard about the James Dyson Award on the news, she and her co-inventors entered their project in the U.K.-based contest, which rewards students designers who create products that improve the way we live. The students collected the runner-up prize— 2, 000 for them and 500 for their school.
As well, they had a chance to meet James Dyson, a U.K. famous inventor. Praising the students for their invention, Dyson says the single-handed bike brake lever could improve safety for all cyclists. By using both brakes at once, you could prevent the possibility of flying over the handlebars and ending up with an injury.
The students hope to sell it to a major company. It may be used in other devices that require two hands for operation.
1. According to the passage, the James Dyson Award was named after _____.
A. a well-known place B. a famous inventor
C. a famous university D. a government leader
2. The underlined part "the runner-up prize" in Paragraph 6 means _____.
A. the second prize B. the rich prize
C. the top prize D. the prize for runners
3. According to the passage, we know that the bike brake lever _____.
A. has already been widely used
B. can only serve the disabled cyclists
C. can protect you from any injuries
D. may have a wide market in the future
2. As data and identity theft becomes more and more common, the market is growing for biometric(生物测量) technologies—like fingerprint scans—to keep others out of private e-spaces. At present, these technologies are still expensive, though.
Researchers from Georgia Tech say that they have come up with a low-cost device(装置)that gets around this problem: a smart keyboard. This smart keyboard precisely measures the cadence(节奏)with which one types and the pressure fingers apply to each key. The keyboard could offer a strong layer of security by analyzing things like the force of a user's typing and the time between key presses. These patterns are unique to each person. Thus, the keyboard can determine peopled identities, and by extension, whether they should be given access to the computer it's connected to—regardless of whether someone gets the password right.
It also doesn't require a new type of technology that people aren't already familiar with. Everybody uses a keyboard and everybody types differently.
In a study describing the technology, the researchers had 100 volunteers type the word "touch" four times using the smart keyboard. Data collected from the device could be used to recognize different participants based on how they typed, with very low error rates. The researchers say that the keyboard should be pretty straightforward to commercialize and is mostly made of inexpensive, plastic-like parts. The team hopes to make it to market in the near future.
1.Why do the researchers develop the smart keyboard
A.To reduce pressure on keys. B.To improve accuracy in typing.
C.To replace the password system. D.To cut the cost of e-space protection.
2.What makes the invention of the smart keyboard possible
A.Computers are much easier to operate. B.Fingerprint scanning techniques develop fast.
C.Typing patterns vary from person to person. D.Data security measures are guaranteed.
3.What do the researchers expect of the smart keyboard
A.It'll be environment-friendly. B.It'll reach consumers soon.
C.It'll be made of plastics. D.It'll help speed up typing.
4.Where is this text most likely from
A.A diary. B.A guidebook. C.A novel. D.A magazine.
3. Charles Darwin lived an unusually quiet life. In 1842, Darwin and his wife Emma moved from London to Kent in southern England to have as little disturbance(烦扰) as possible. They already had two children then, and would go on to have eight more in the country.
Darwin, had very regular habits. He rose early and went for a walk. After breakfast he worked in his study until 9:30 am, his most productive time of the day, and then read his letters lying on the sofa before returning to work.
At midday he would go for another walk with his dog, stopping at his greenhouse to check his experiments. Then he would go for another walk around an area of woodland. While walking on his "thinking path", Darwin would consider his unsolved scientific problems.
After lunch he read the newspaper and wrote letters. His network of friends provided information from all comers of the world.
The Darwins were not very strict parents and the children were always seen running wild. Their father worked patiently with a background of happy shouts and little footsteps walking past his study door.
After dinner Darwin played backgammon (a game for two people to play) with his wife. He once wrote, "Now the result with my wife in backgammon stands like this: she has won only 2,490 games, while I have won, hurrah(a cheer of joy or victory), hurrah, 2,795 games!"
Although he had poor health, Darwin continued to publish a lot of creative works until his final book in 1881. He died the following year, aged 73.
Rather than a quiet space in the local churchyard, which he called "the sweetest place on Earth", Darwin was given a state funeral(国葬) in London's Westminster Abbey.
1. Why did the Darwins move to Kent
A. To do more experiments. B. To cut their cost of living.
C. To enjoy more peacefulness. D. To be together with their children.
2. What did Darwin do every day
A. He studied in the forest. B. He started to work at 9:30 am.
C. He wrote letters in the morning. D. He examined his experiments.
3. What did Darwin's children probably think of him
A. Strict. B. Kind. C. Cold. D. Brave.
4. What is this text mainly about
A. Darwin's scientific achievements. B. Darwin's unusual state funeral.
C. Darwin's personal life. D. Darwin's large family.
4. Dogs are our best friends. That's especially true after a disaster, such as an earthquake. When buildings fall down, search-and-rescue dogs help find trapped people. Dogs' amazing noses can pick up the smell of survivors. Now scientists have developed an electronic tool that does the same thing. It's taking smell detection (探测) to a whole new level.
The new invention is a sort of electronic nose, which can detect extremely low levels of many compounds (化合物) from people's skin. This isn't the first time engineers have developed such an object. Earlier models, however, have been bulky and expensive. They could not detect low levels of target compounds either. The new one is inexpensive and small enough to fit inside hand-held equipment.
The electronic nose can detect extremely slight smell of more than one compound at the same time. "Being able to do this, in such a small object, is the significant discovery," says Sotiris E. Pratsinis, Professor of Process Engineering & Materials Science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. His team tested it in special spaces. They were like the small spaces where people might be trapped. Chemicals given off by the volunteers built up inside. The electronic equipment detected those compounds at unbelievably low levels.
The results were good news for the research team. But they may be not for our four-legged friends, who could soon be out of a job. "Ideally, this technology could replace search-and-rescue dogs," Pratsinis says.
Stephen Taylor, an electrical engineer, agrees that the new technology has some benefits over dogs. Still, he thinks it may be too soon to have our trusty friends retire. He suspects, "I foresee that such an object could add to the fine work done by the dogs." Taylor also pointed out some potential limitations of the new invention. "E-noses are useful, but can be very likely to be affected by unstable readings and interruption," he says.
1.Why does the author talk about dogs at the beginning
A.To catch the readers' attention. B.To introduce the topic about e-noses.
C.To show what search-and-rescue dogs do. D.To add background information for discussion.
2.Which of the following best explains "bulky" underlined in Paragraph 2
A.Complex. B.Fragile. C.Handy. D.Large.
3.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A.What e-noses' working principle is.
B.How e-noses are made.
C.What differences between dogs and e-noses are.
D.How powerful e-noses are.
4.What does Stephen Taylor mean
A.Dogs and e-noses could work together. B.Search-and-rescue dogs will retire soon.
C.E-noses are more reliable than noses of dogs. D.Dogs are better at finding out trapped people.
How can I fight laziness
Lazy people will never amount to anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.
①_____ Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.
Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more proactive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. ②_____
Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(诱惑) that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child to promote responsibility. ③_____
④_____ Spouses(配偶) and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. To fight household laziness, lead by example. Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when your are surrounded by motivated people.
Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness. Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle. ⑤_____
A. Knowing how to fight laziness is important.
B. One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.
C. Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home.
D. Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner.
E. It can enable you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.
F. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal.
G. Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own life.

It was late spring, when my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom. However, little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose pleasant smell filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. "What are you doing " I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we'd be stuck here, so far from home. Fortunately, that wasn't the case. My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. "It'll just be a minute," she called back through the open windows.
Impatiently, I cast my eyes towards the edge of the road before they settled on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, "Do you know someone there " She shook her head. "Then what did you do with the flowers " She smiled slightly, "I gave them to the receptionist(接待员) What " She laughed at my confusion. "I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven‘t received any in a while."
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we went on with our driving, I spoke again, "Did you leave your name " To this she answered instantly, "No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of thanks for me."
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deed, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn‘t know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passerby, since there had seen so few along the way.
Paragraph 1:
I let out a sigh while my mom rooted herself against the car worrying what could be done.

Paragraph 2:
As we drove along, a flower shop came into sight on the road.

根据首段第一句即文章主旨句“Charles Darwin lived an unusually quiet life.”
Earlier models, however, have been bulky and expensive... The new one is inexpensive and small enough to fit inside hand-held equipment.
根据最后一段中的“I foresee that such an object could add to the fine work done by the dogs.”
解析:①由第二段的内容“By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.”
③由上文内容“Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child to promote responsibility.”
④由第五段的内容“To fight household laziness, lead by example. Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task.”
⑤由上文中的“Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle.”

My Unforgettable Experience
Last summer holiday, in order to do something meaningful instead of staying at home, I got a job at a fast food restaurant as a cleaner. I worked eight hours a day for four weeks.
Every day I started off for work early in the morning and got home late in the evening. The job was hard and boring and seemed endless, which made me so tired that I nearly gave it up halfway. However, I finished it with determination. Although I met with a lot of difficulties in the work, it helped me understand better what labor means. I think it was really an unforgettable experience.
2.答案:
Paragraph 1:
I let out a sigh while my mom rooted herself against the car worrying what could be done. But after waiting in vain for a considerable time, Mom and I decided to walk back the road to the nursing home and seek help. God knows how far we had driven! When we arrived, the receptionist was surprised, but warmly helped us contact the garage. There, the old men who had received the flowers were excited to meet us, talking about how great that day was. What random actions of kindness could mean to the people who received them amazed us. While we were laughing and talking merrily, we received the news that the garage had got our car repaired.
Paragraph 2:
As we drove alone, a flower shop came into sight on the road. I asked Mom to pull up and paced quickly into the flower shop, where a bunch of flowers glowing red in full bloom caught my eye. Having witnessed the effect of kindness, I decided to send Mom the sweet flowers. Soon, the pleasant scent filled the car again. Mom tried to conceal her excitement, but the glittering tears failed her. Through this trip, I discovered that, despite my occasional anger towards her, I actually felt proud of her. This was a trip of my life.
