Police officers often receive calls that aren’t, well, emergencies (紧急的事情).
But something felt off to officer Tim Teneyck of Oregon, Ohio, when a woman called to order a pizza on November 13.He told her she had the wrong number, only to quickly realize this had been no mistake on her part.
In a recording of the call, we can hear them both on the line. “You called 911 to order a pizza ” Tim asked. “This is the wrong number to call for a pizza.”“No, no, no…you’re not understanding,” the woman said.
When the woman replied with her apartment information, everything became clear. She didn’t want a pizza at all. She needed help. But she couldn’t tell him that directly because she wasn’t in a safe place.
While Tim has never received a call like hers in his 14 years of service, he understood her message. After a few more questions, he said, “I’m getting you now.”
As it turned out, the woman was in an apartment with a man who was physically hurting her mother. She knew he would run away if he discovered she was calling 911, so she pretended to order a pizza instead. When Tim sent officers her way, he had them turn off their sirens (警报器) before they arrived.
The officers arrested (逮捕) 56-year-old Simon Lopez, who was charged with domestic violence (被控家暴).
Oregon Police Chief Michael Navarre said they couldn’t have saved this woman without Tim’s help. He added that it was important for people in danger to “another express to the police officer that they are in trouble, and this woman did that. She did that not with her words, but with the tone (语气) of her voice.”“Other officers…told me they wouldn’t have picked up on this,” Tim said.
Of course, the other hero is this clever woman who saved her mom by keeping a cool head. It couldn’t have been easy in such a stressful situation, which just makes her braver!

My brother and I were driving home together and started talking about something interesting.Without paying attention, my brother took a wrong turn.
Unfortunately, the wrong turn took us toward a bridge and, we had no way of turning back. My brother had to pay to cross. He was clearly frustrated by the mistake and the needless waste of $4.
As we drove forward, my brother noticed an old black Mustang (福特野马汽车) by the side of the road. A young guy was standing nearby trying to phone someone. I was busy trying to figure out which way we went next but my brother pulled over and asked the guy if he needed any help. And he did. He had a flat tire (瘪胎).
My brother helped him change the flat. We started getting to know the young man who was from a rough (危险的) neighborhood nearby. He said that this has been a bad week for him; earlier he had gotten into a minor (不严重的) car accident, and now this flat on his way home from work. But he called us “a breath of fresh air” and kept thanking us because he really would have been stuck if we hadn’t come along. After we had finished the job, he thanked us again and pulled out $20 to try to give it to us.“No,”I said.“We were never supposed to even get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did.It was to help you.Thank you for turning our mistake into an opportunity to serve.”
What I loved most was watching my brother throughout this process. He was able to turn his annoyance over the mistake into positive energy. He was able to see a chance to help (which I totally missed!) even in an otherwise negative situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.
