Classmates’ laughter, parents’ nagging(唠叨), beautiful music—we can hear all kinds of sounds every day. However, that wasn’t the case with Jiang Mengnan.
At just 6 months old, Jiang lost her hearing after relatives gave her the wrong medicine. To understand others, Jiang learned to read lips and feel vocalization(发声) by putting her hands on her parents’ throats and feeling the vibration(振动) of their vocal cords(声带) when she was a kid. It was a slow, hard process, but Jiang never gave up.
As she got older, Jiang entered a standard primary school to study. She said it was difficult at first. During lessons, teachers would often turn their backs to students and walk around, so Jiang failed to catch much of what they said. What she could do was to copy down everything on the blackboard and study after class.
Her perseverance(毅力) made her a top student. In 2011, she was admitted to Jilin University in Changchun, Jilin province. After graduating in 2018 with a master’s degree(硕士学位), Jiang furthered her studies in Tsinghua University. Now, she is going to receive her doctorate(博士) at the end of this year.
Feeling grateful for the respect and help that she received from others, Jiang wants to continue scientific research in medicine and contribute to solving problems relating to life and health.
