VI. Reading comprehension (阅读理解)(共50分)
Choose the best answer (根据下列内容,选择恰当的答案) (共12分)
You wrote to me about your problems. You dream of travelling, and you wonder how, as a teenager, you can make it despite little support from your parents.
I understand that you are not very happy about taking the subjects that don't interest you. You don't think you will ever need much of what you are studying right now. While some of your lessons may not seem directly relevant to(相关) your needs at the moment, you are learning valuable study skills. You do need these skills to analyse the world around you,to process information, and above all, to think for yourself. These exact skills will help you overcome obstacles that stand between you and your travel dreams.
I say dream big but stay practical. However, it's the practical part that most people miss. Even the most pleasant life has its obstacles, but a setback won't prevent you from reaching your dreams if you stay rooted in the practical. The road in front of you will never be easy. Be prepared, chart a route ahead and then actually stick to it.
Of course, as a teen, you have some limitations when making your travel plans. Your parents have a say in where and how you travel. The amount of money they can spend on your travel is also a factor. Cost will determine your experience—whether you visit Europe, participate in a student exchange programme, or stay and work to help with family finances.
Given the limitations that have shaped your life until now, I hope you will maintain your travel dreams. A plan for travel acts like a silent ship running alongside your life as you take your first solo steps into the world. It is there waiting for you, always inviting you to step on board. Travel was a goal I believed would finally signal that I had made it through to the next chapter of my life. I made it there. You can, too.

My summer hols wr CWOT. B4, WE USED 2go 2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3:-@KIDS FTF. ILNY, its gr8.
)Can you understand this sentence If you can’t, don’t feel too bad: neither could the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Netspeak: the language of computerized communication found on Internet or cellphones. If you read Netspeak for the first time, it looks like an unrecognizable foreign language. So, what is the “translation” of the sentence above My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York; it’s great.
School teachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming the English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes can be seen in students’ writing. They fear the language could become corrupted(面目全非的).
Everyone should just relax, say linguists. They believe Netspeak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the University of Wales, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing has been picked up again. Geoffrey Nunberg, from Stanford University, agrees. “People get better at writing by writing,” he says. “Kids who are now doing text messaging, e-mail, and instant messages will write at least as well as, and possibly better than their parents.”
Linguist James Milroy says, for centuries, it is believed without exception that young people are harming the language. And you can be sure that when today’s teenagers become tomorrow’s parents, they will think this way, too. Milroy argues that languages do not and cannot become “corrupted”; they simply change to meet the new needs.
However, Netspeakers do agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write standard English Cynthia McVey says, “I can understand Netspeak worries teachers and it’s important to make their pupils understand that text messaging is for fun, but that to learn to write proper English is necessary for their future.”
Perhaps, we should give teenagers a little more trust anyway. Erin, age 12, says, “I wouldn’t use text language in my homework. Text is just for fun.”
78. School teachers and parents are in favor of the new form of writing, aren’t they

80. Why do languages change, according to James Milroy

Listen to the passage and complete the following sentences (听短文,完成下列内容。每
空格限填一词) (10 分)
Hello, everyone. I’m going to introduce some strange races in the United Kingdom.
Shrove Tuesday is commonly known as Pancake Tuesday. It is a time for people to eat pancakes or join in pancake races. When a special bell is rung in Scarborough, a town in northern England, everyone goes down to the road next to the beach. They jump over long ropes, about fifteen people to one rope. When people have pancake races, they usually run with a frying pan and tossing a pancake at the same time.
In the south-west of England, cheese rolling often takes place in spring. Cheeses in round boxes roll down a hill and people run after them and try to catch them. The hill is very steep, so people often fall over – if you take part in this, you need to be very fit and wear your oldest jeans. Snail racing takes place in a village in Norfolk. It began in the 1960s. Every year, over 200 snail owners take part in the race. The snails have to cover a distance of 30 centimeters. The fastest snail wins and its owner gets many vegetables. Usually there’s a big party for the owners
and on-lookers after the race.
So, that’s just a taste of a few traditions. Would you like to take part in any of them
