More sections of the wall surrounding the Forbidden City in the heart of Beijing are now open to the public, reported the Beijing Daily on Thursday.
The Palace Museum in the Forbidden City has opened the southern, eastern and northern sections of the Wumen Gate (Meridian Gate) at the southern end to the southwest corner tower. Visitors can walk on the wall and overlook three-quarters of the palace.
Built in the 1400s, the Forbidden City’s wall is the largest and best preserved royal palace wall in China, with a length of 3,437.6 meters. It is 9.3 meters high and 8.55 meters wide at the base, 6.63 meters at the top.
The wall has a gate on each side. At the four corners of the wall sit towers, which are the most visible parts of the palace to people outside. Their splendid roof structure and shadows in the water surrounding the palace always draw crowds who photograph the beautiful scenery. The move was mainly to avoid overcrowding during China’s week-long Golden Week holiday and offers visitors more opportunities to see the cultural relics. Such an arrangement will remain in place after the National Day holiday.
In recent years, the Palace Museum has taken many measures to control the number of visitors, while unveiling more areas to the public.
In 2015, to celebrate its 90th anniversary, the museum made 65 percent off the royal complex, including a small section of the wall, accessible to the public. Blue whales are the largest creatures to live on Earth after the dinosaurs. These amazing creatures are not only the largest whale species but also the largest mammal (哺乳动物) species to have ever existed on Earth.
The average length of a blue whale is 23-27 meters and its weight is from 100 to 150 tons. In spite of their large size, blue whales can swim at a fast speed of 25 to 30 miles per hour. The blue whales are not really blue in color but are actually gray. Blue whales feed on krill (磷虾). They take in a lot of water. They have a very unique way of communicating with each other by sending low frequency sound waves, which is even higher than the sound produced by a plane.
Before the whale hunting time started, blue whales could be found in all major oceans. Once, there were more than 200,000 blue whales that swam in the oceans. The Seas of Canada, North Atlantic Ocean and the seas to the south of Madagascar are among the most popular regions where blue whales can be found nowadays. Other major parts are the Antarctic Ocean and the Davis Strait.
Early whaling was limited by simple tools and whaling skills. So the damage to whale populations was not great. But with the development of powerful guns and steam-powered boats, whaling advanced. More whales were hunted at a rapid rate. In 1931 alone, 29, 649 whales were killed. Humans competed to hunt the big animals. Besides, the number of blue whales is low due to more man’s deep-sea activities.
Fortunately, officials are doing something great about the blue whales. The International Whaling Commission has taken steps to protect these wonderful mittees of experts have been formed to work against whaling.
How do blue whales communicate
A. By swimming fast. B. By delivering food.
C. By touching each other. D. By sending sound signals.

B. The ways that blue whales are hunted.

British scientists are using two self-directed water vehicles to explore the animal and plant life of the Celtic Sea as part of their research on robots.
The Celtic Sea is a body of water off the southern coast of Ireland. The area is known for its unusual sea life. The scientists attempt to figure out why sea creatures are so attracted to this part of the Atlantic Ocean.
One of the research vehicles is powered by batteries. It collects data for the National Oceanography (海洋学) Centre in Southampton, England, and the World Wildlife Fund. The vehicle can stay floating on water for up to 30 days. Reports of what it finds in the Celtic Sea are sent by satellite.
Stephen Woodard is an engineer who helped design the vehicle. He says it has equipment that can discover small organisms (微生物) called zooplankton and fish. He adds that other sensing equipment measures water currents and other features of the sea life.
The vehicle also creates a 2-D map of the sea. Another vehicle that can stay floating on water for months sends information about the areas of an ocean that have a lot of plant and animal life activity.
Lavinia Suberg is one of the scientists studying the creatures of the Celtic Sea. She says productive ocean areas, like the Celtic Sea, attract small organisms, which then attract fish. She adds that areas with a large increase in fish often attract sea mammals(哺乳动物) and birds.
Using these robotic ocean vehicles greatly reduces the cost of exploring the seas with manned laboratories. Scientists can spend more time studying the collected information. They say the research will give them a better understanding of the needs of the Celtic Sea for management and protection.
Why do the British scientists explore the Celtic Sea
A. To learn why it is rich in sea life.
B To study its currents and geography.
C. To test their self-directed water vehicles.
D. To know what kinds of creatures live in it.
33. What do we know about the two water vehicles
A. They are controlled by humans in real time.
B. They work depending on the map of the sea.
C. They can directly send data back to scientists.
D. They can keep floating on water for a long time.
34. What can be inferred about the sea mammals and birds according to Lavinia Suberg
A. They are afraid of living alone.
B. They are especially interested in fish.
C. They mainly feed on small organisms.
D. They like to live in warm ocean areas.
35. What can be the test title for the text
A. Life in the Celtic Sea.
B. Puzzles in Ocean Creatures.
C. Water Robots Exploring the Celtic Sea.
D. Water Vehicles Being Developed in Britain.

M: Hello, welcome to our program “Today City”. I’m Larry. We’re going to Louisville Kentucky where our guest Michelle Ray comes from. She is proud of her middle-sized city with a small town feel and big city dreams. Now, Michelle, tell us about your city.

M: That all sounds very exciting. I’m sure some of our listeners will include Louisville in their travel plan for their next holiday. Thank you, Michelle.
Text 10
M: We are glad to have Dr. Garfield to talk to us today about dreams. Let me start by asking the first question. Does everyone dream
W: It appears that everyone does. Mostly when people say that they never dream, what they really mean is that they don’t remember their dreams or they don’t think their dreams are important. The reason behind is that they might have been made fun of with a child when they first reported their dreams or it was so frightening that they just turned off dreaming completely. The other day, someone named Davis came to me and said that he used to be a great dreamer, but suddenly he stopped having dreams. I asked him what it happened. It turned out that his brother died by heart attack and he never expected that such a terrible thing would happen to a young person. Generally, when there was some frightening event and dream about it was too terrible. People prefer not to dream about it.Actually the worst thing you can do is stop dreaming. Because it means that the bad experience would be too painful to even appear in dreams. As long as you dream about it and even the dream is frightening, your mind is working on it.My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal with our problems. We see certain patterns take place in dreams. When a person is hurt deep inside, when a person is seriously ill or when a person has been really sad, if people turn off their dreams totally, it means they don’t love themselves to even think about it
