Trust
“Settle down!” Mr. Taylor was trying to calm the boys with a loud voice. The moment they entered the gym and saw the climbing walls towering over them, the boys got excited and started making noises. But Stevie was an exception, who was standing aside looking at his thin arms silently. Stevie didn’t like climbing. It wasn’t his thing. Getting along with people wasn’t his thing, either. He just felt nobody liked or trusted him at school.
Then came the coach, who taught the boys some basic skills. He said everyone should have a climbing partner and showed them how to belay (保护) their partner. “If you are a climber, trust your belayer and challenge yourself. Belayers, please remember that your partner’s life depends on you.”
The moment he finished, the boys couldn’t wait to match themselves with a partner except Stevie, who was left alone wandering around the gym. Noticing his embarrassment, Mr. Taylor raised his voice and said, “I need someone I can really trust to team up with!” He looked around. Then his gaze fell upon Stevie. “How about you, Stevie Would you like to be my belayer ” “Me ” Stevie widened his eyes, surprised to hear Mr. Taylor even say his name. He had thought he was invisible. “I guess,” Stevie managed a weak smile.
Nervous as he was, he plucked up courage. “It doesn’t matter who gets to the top first. It’s about giving it a go.” Hearing Mr. Taylor’s words, Stevie gritted (咬紧牙关) his teeth and moved up slowly, his face pressed against the rough surface. “Done it!” Stevie finally called from the top with excitement. Then Mr. Taylor started to let him down through a perfect control of the rope.“Well done,” said Mr. Taylor when Stevie landed on the floor.
Now it’s Stevie’s turn to control the rope. Bearing in mind his responsibility, Stevie carefully watched as Mr. Taylor climbed up, pulling in the rope hand over hand. He felt his heart racing wildly. Finally, Mr. Taylor arrived at the top. “Ready to let me down now ” said Mr. Taylor. “Okay,” Stevie took a deep breath, his palms sweating uncontrollably.

Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus (圣诞老人). I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was at home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me. “No Santa Claus!” She shouted. “Ridiculous! Don’t believe it." That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad.
Realizing how I felt, Grandma turned to me and said sweetly, “My dear, however, you can be a Santa Claus, or a Santa’s helper. So now, put on your coat, and let’s go.”
“Go where, Grandma ” I asked. “Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. “Take this money.” she said, “and buy something for someone who needs it. I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.
I was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten—dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock’s grade—two class.
Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. I knew that because he never went outside to have breaks during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and that he didn’t have a coat. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
“Is this a Christmas present for someone ” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. “Yes.”
The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.

Christmas came, and Stewart gathered the children at the dinner table. He tried to prepare all of their favorite food because he had no extra money for individual gifts.
“Lucy, I baked your favorite apple pie. Sean, I made sure to get some baked spaghetti (意大利面条) from the store. And Gregory, I baked a whole chicken. Your favorites! Merry Christmas, my sweet children!” Stewart told them.
After eating dinner together, Stewart took his three kids outside to make a huge snowman and had a snowball fight. It was a family tradition that Stewart wanted to keep alive even though his wife was no longer with them.
Many years passed, and Stewart’s kids all had families of their own. And they were all too busy to visit Stewart, although they didn’t live far away. So Stewart spent most of the year alone.
Stewart would often sit in a wheelchair and look at old photos of his family. He came across one particular photo where he and his children were making a snowman outside the house. They were happy, and the lovely smiles on his children’s faces were priceless.
Stewart waited for his children to come on Christmas Eve, looking out of the window. “How I wish...” he said to himself as he watched others having fun together in their backyards.
Stewart was sure that each member of his family had forgotten his invitation once again until he heard a short knock on the door.
“Who is it ” Stewart asked.
“Hi, Grandpa,” a small boy said after he opened the door.
“Tim! What a surprise!” Stewart smiled. “Is it just you How did you get here alone !”
Tim nodded sadly, “Even on Christmas Eve, my parents don’t notice me. They’re too busy with work. I know how much you love Christmas, Grandpa, so I walked here.”
Stewart wanted to cheer his grandson up, so he went to get dressed. “Well, you and I will have a happy Christmas together,” Stewart told Tim. “Kids deserve to play in the snow every Christmas, ”he added.

My Best Teaching Experience
Tyler was only in my senior class for a semester. He had been suspended (使停学) many times in previous years because of his anger issues. When he entered my class, I thought the worst.
Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked to the class, I would ask students questions, calling them by name. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would respond with a joke. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.
About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get students involved in class discussions or at least have them sit quietly and attentively (专心地). By contrast, Tyler was often loud and sometimes rude.
He had been in so much trouble over the years. He expected his teachers to know about his past;about how many times he had been sent to the office or suspended from school. I had found that these sorts of referrals (移交) were not very effective and that students would return from the office behaving worse than before.
One day, Tyler was talking over me while I was teaching. I stopped my lesson and said, “Tyler, why don’t you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own ” With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can’t remember what he said other than that he included some impolite words. I sent Tyler straight to the office, and he received a week’s suspension.
To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler’s anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was suspended from school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as a class. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return.

5.Once upon a time the colors of the world started to quarrel. All claimed that they were the best. The most important. The most useful. The favorite.
Green said: “Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and of hope. I was chosen for grass, trees and leaves. Without me, all animals would die. Look over the countryside and you will see that I am in the majority.”
Blue interrupted: “You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is the water that is the basis of life and drawn up by the clouds from the deep sea. The sky gives space and peace and serenity. Without my peace, you would all be nothing.”
Yellow chuckled: “You are all so serious. I bring laughter, gaiety, and warmth into the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, the stars are yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower, the whole world starts to smile. Without me there would be no fun.”
Orange started next to blow her trumpet: “I am the color of health and strength. I may be scarce, but I am precious for I serve the needs of human life. I carry the most important vitamins. Think of carrots, pumpkins, oranges, mangoes, and papayas. I don’t hang around all the time, but when I fill the sky at sunrise or sunset, my beauty is so striking that no one gives another thought to any of you.”
Red could stand it no longer he shouted out: “I am the ruler of all of you. I am blood - life’s blood! I am the color of danger and of bravery. I am willing to fight for a cause. I bring fire into the blood. Without me, the earth would be as empty as the moon. I am the color of passion and of love, the red rose, the poinsettia and the poppy.”
And so the colors went on boasting,

My lucky bamboo
My wife Hannah, and I don’t usually keep houseplants. Anything in pots gets either overwatered or underwatered. But after my diagnosis (诊断) with a brain cancer, I loved the idea of havingsomething new and green around.
My friend Mitch gave me what he said was a lucky bamboo plant in a deep-green container. We placed the plant in the living room window across from the sofa where I spent much of the day.
I told Hannah I wanted to care for the plant myself. When it didn’t immediately turn yellow or brown or lose all its leaves, I was pleasantly surprised.
Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt useless. The cancer limited my ability to walk, and the treatment left me worn out, making it hard for me to accomplish everyday tasks. As a family physician, I was used to being the one who provided care, not the one who received it.
Since my diagnosis, it seemed that I had to rely on help from other people. The enormous change left me feeling unsettled. Watering the plant, as small an act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity and taught me I could still be a caregiver.
Over the next few months, I recovered from surgery and completed treatment afterwards. Even after I returned to work, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it had nearly doubled in height and its leaves were shiny. Both the tree and I were thriving(茁壮成长).
Then, surprisingly, it began to show signs of stress. I increased my watering. I fed it commercial plant food. No matter what I did, the leaves kept browning and dropping to the floor.
I grew more and more discouraged and uneasy. “I can’t even care for a simple plant!” I yelled. “I’m failing!”Hannah reminded me that we’d seen houseplants die before. She asked me why I was getting so worked up about this particular one.

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters. More often than not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach. Worse sill, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming consumed by waste. One weekend,Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up. Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water. Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ale silently. Noticing their low spirits, Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened ”Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice,“It’s those annoying plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.”Understanding the pair’s disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted,”Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.”“Just two of us.”complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other.Suddenly, an idea lashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes,that’s the point! We should make more people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus.

She jumped off my daughter’s arms and moved unsteadily across to me, waiting for me to pick her up. For the next three hours, she slept peacefully, while I sat on the floor — not daring to move, for fear that I woke her up. And, it was from that moment that Lizzy — our Cavalier King Charles, all of 8 weeks, took over my life.
Over the next six months, I learnt how to be a new mum again — this time to a non-verbal, four-legged child — cleaning poos and pees, cooking special meals, reading her every need and want, checking her breathing every hour, while she took over the household — and our hearts. She left her mark on every bit of furniture — chewing the edges of beds, tables, chairs and leather couches. Socks went missing and were found days later among the flower beds; expensive shoes were chewed on with meticulous(缜密的) precision — never to be worn again.
Like most eager parents, I wanted my child to shine and took her to every possible socializing class. Every weekend, as the clock struck 9 am, I was at the dog park where instructors taught other dogs how to walk on leads, listen to commands, jump through hoops and hurdles, and socialize with their hairy friends. Week after week, I watched in disappointment as Lizzy came last in every single exercise. Every week, the instructors comforted me that she would improve, but to no avail. While other dogs learnt new tricks, Lizzy chased birds and rolled in the mud. After six months I gave up, convinced Lizzy was bound for better things in life, and 10 years later I’m still waiting.
But not all was lost. Lizzy understands English, Bengali and Hindi with equal ease. Her head cocks(翘起) and ears perk up at the mere mention of the words ‘walk’ , ‘drive’ and ‘food’ .

Being Planted
“106!” The cry of disappointment breaks the silence of the peaceful night.
In darkness, he stands still there, with tears dropping continuously from his eyes.
He is a 5th-year Ph.D.student majoring in biology. This is his 106th attempt to cultivate strawberries which could bear extreme climates. In his 105th experiment, he did all the pre-processes that he knew which could lead him closer to his goal. Every generation of the strawberry seemed to bring him closer to success, but every time the result was alike — failure, failure, failure. He has literally got used to it. But this time, he can hardly help feeling frustrated and angry.
“Who stole my experimental strawberry!”
Last night, when he got to the field, he was thrilled. Although most of the plants were obviously dying, one plant stood vigorously in the middle of the experimental field. The plant was labeled “Plant No. 106” . What a coincidence! In his 106th attempt, the 106th plant was finally mutating (变异) in its ideal way — the spark of hope, to him.
Last night, Plant No. 106’s fruit started to turn red. He was never so close to success. What he needed to do was to wait for several days to harvest that pink, shiny, attractive fruit.
But this night, the fruit disappears. So does his hope.
“3 years’ effort! 1096 days’ struggling! 13152 hours’ DNA editing and experiment. ALL GONE!” he murmurs to himself. He regrets that he didn’t get a small sample of the stolen strawberry last night.
Now he is using his fingers to dig the ground. He doesn’t know why he is doing so. He is well aware that the results of the past 106 attempts are all wasted because of the incident and his not taking the sample in time. He has no seeds left. At the present, he seems to have only 2 choices: to start from the very beginning, or to give up.
要求:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

John, whose parents were addicted to alcohol, was always failing in exams. Although he had been failing every year, he was still passed on from grade to grade and now he was a student of the seventh grade. John was tall, but he went completely unnoticed by the school teachers until Miss Smith.
Miss Smith was smiling, young and beautiful. John liked her. Despite this, he still continued to fail. He never did his homework, and he was always in trouble with Miss Smith. When he was punished for failing to hand in his homework, he felt just sad! Still, he did not study.
In the middle of the first semester of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. John hurried through his test, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school. At home, no one checked on John to see if he was safe. No one knew whether he was even at home because no one cared. However, John never missed a day of school.
One day, Miss Smith’s impatient voice broke into his daydreams.
“John!” Shocked, he turned to look at her.
“Pay attention!”
John looked at his teacher, as she began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.
“You all did pretty well,” she told the class, “except for one boy. It breaks my heart to tell you this, but...”she hesitated, and started staring at John.
“...The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!”
She just stared at John and John dropped his eyes. However, John still wouldn’t do his homework. Even as the punishments became severe, he remained stubborn.
“Just try it! ONE WEEK!” He was unmoved.
“Give yourself a chance. Don’t give up!” Nothing changed him.
“John! Please! I care about you!”
Wow! Suddenly, John got it! Someone cared about him Unbelievable! John went home from school, thoughtful. Walking into the house, he found his parents drunk as expected. As Stevie loosened the grip, the rope slipped through his hand much faster than expected. Suddenly, Mr. Taylor dropped like a stone. Stevie let out a little scream. The picture of Mr. Taylor hitting the ground flashed over his mind. He quickly gripped the rope, bringing Mr. Taylor to a sudden stop. Regretful and cautious, Stevie looked up and saw Mr. Taylor wearing a smile and encouraging him with an inspiring gesture, which made him less nervous. Then he restarted loosening the grip slowly. Finally, Mr. Taylor dropped smoothly down to the bottom and signaled to Stevie with a thumb up. “You made it!”
Suddenly, the boys burst into wild applause and yelled encouragement at them. When Mr. Taylor stepped forward and gave Stevie a big hug, a ripple of excitement and pride ran through him. From that day on, Stevie opened his heart to the people around him. He made new friends at school. He even fell in love with climbing where he was regarded as a trustworthy teammate. Grateful to Mr. Taylor, he knew deep down in his heart that it was his teacher’s trust that allowed him to embrace his new self and others.

She wrote “To Bobby, From Santa Claus” on it, after which she drove me over to Bobby Decker’s house, explaining I was officially one of Santa’s helpers. Grandma parked down the street from Bobby’s house, and I took a deep breath, and dashed for his front door. Seeing no other people notice us, I put the Christmas present down, pounded his doorbell and Grandma and I hid in the car.
Grandma and I waited breathlessly for Bobby Decker’s front door to open in the bush and finally it opened. Out went Bobby Decker. Seeing the coat in the bag, he looked very astonished and then called his mother to go out. After hearing them say “Thanks” to Santa Claus, I felt very proud of what I had done. 4.One possible version:
On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him. At last he came, walking with his hands in his pockets. That image immediately brought back memories of the boy throwing a tantrum in class the other day. Yet I managed to restrain my anger this time. These past few days, I had been building a wall between us with blame and punishment, so I thought to myself that maybe I should try another way. “I want to apologize for the quarrel that we had in the middle of class, and I’m really sorry if it hurt your feelings,” I said, finally breaking the ice.
A spark of surprise flashed across his face. The naughty boy froze there, staring at me with wide eyes. It was clear that he had never heard an apology from a teacher before. “It is I who should say sorry,” he murmured, his face burning with shame, “I should have learned to control myself.” With a smile, I stepped forward and patted him on his shoulder, signaling to him to go back to his seat. In the days that followed, Tyler didn’t misbehave in class anymore and took an active part in class discussions. I had never expected “understanding” could make such a huge difference — it turned one of my worst teaching experiences into perhaps the best one.

Suddenly there was a startling flash of bright lightening thunder rolled and boomed. Rain started to pour down relentlessly. The colors crouched down in fear, drawing close to one another for comfort. In the midst of the clamor, rain began to speak: “You foolish colors, fighting amongst yourselves, each trying to dominate the rest. Don’t you know that you were each made for a special purpose, unique and different Join hands with one another and come to me.”
Doing as they were told, the colors united and joined hands. The rain continued: “From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch across the sky in a great bow of color as a reminder that you can all live in peace. The Rainbow is a sign of hope for tomorrow.” And so, whenever a good rain washes the world, and a Rainbow appears in the sky, let us remember to appreciate one another.

“If my lucky bamboo dies,” I said, “I might die too!” Unable to shake off the feeling that the plant had become a symbol of my own shaky health, I cried tears when I was alone. Now that the tree was struggling, increasing fear seized me, which in turn helped me regain calmness. Sunk into thought, I realized I had wrongly connected my care of the plant— something over which I had at least some control—with my own survival—something over which I had no control.
As my anxiety decreased, I began to dig into online tutorials to help me figure out how to care for my ailing (状况不佳的) plant. Following the instructions, I transplanted the bamboo to a larger pot to give it room to grow. When it was back in the sunny window, we both began to thrive again. On seeing the tree in its new pot, I couldn’t help thinking of Mitch and the other people who have cared for and supported me. So blessed and grateful were I that nothing in this world could beat me, even the cancer.

8.For me, Lizzy’s the perfect child unlike my other two-legged girls. When I am busy, she’d like to do an errand for me. For example, she will help me to fetch a book, drop the litter and so on just like a considerate girl. When I am in a low spirit, she will sit by me in silence, and I can obviously feel that she cares for me. When I am stuck in danger, she will come to me and ask for help when she cannot make it. In a word, she is so lovely that I want to always live with her.
Of course, this perfect child has shortcomings. To begin with, her waste ruins the neatness of my house and the germs it brings may leave me ill. Also, sometimes she makes such a lot of noise that my neighbors can’t bear and complain about it, which bothers me. Last but not least, it cost me much time and money to take care of her as she is picky about food and want to take a walk outside almost everyday. Taking her strengths and shortcomings into consideration, I attach more importance to the former. Therefore, I am willing to keep her my company and regard her as my baby.

He uses his finger to dig the soil of that inch of field which used to contain his hope. No matter what the result is, he wants to bring some soil back as a memory to his 3-year effort. Out of the blue, he touches something that feels different. It is a sprouting seed! It was accidentally planted too close to the mutated plant. It looks even more vigorous than No. 106 in this more rigid environment. It is obvious that this slowly-growing plant will bring out an even better experimental result than Plant No. 106. He names it Plant No. 106- 1.
He is so excited that he bursts into tears. If someone hadn’t stolen Plant N0. 106, if he hadn’t dug the soil after he thought he failed, he would miss this extraordinarily special seed. Everything is not only hopeful again, but becoming even better. Sometimes, we may find ourselves in darkness, feeling helpless and desperate, just like Plant No. 106- 1, just like “HE” . But never give in, for darkness may be temporary. Please be patient and hold your virtues of perseverance, for maybe “we” are just being planted.
