As my wife worked a late shift, my three small children looked at me expectantly. “What’s for dinner ” one of them said.
The last time I had made dinner was when I made ramen (拉面) in college. Now, I had three mouths to feed-aged two, six and nine-but I was crucially short on ideas. Like a deer in headlights, I searched for a possible answer.
“Where’s the Twister game ”
“Not Twister, ” Abby, my oldest, scolded. “Dinner. ”
I walked to the closet, pulled out the game, and tested the spinner (转盘). Then I slid a couple of sheets of paper between the plastic arrow and the cardboard base and sketched out four quadrants (90度圆弧). I looked at the kids. “Who wants chocolate ”
Alex, my youngest, screamed in delight.
Abby crossed her arms. “Dad, Mom wouldn’t let that happen. ”
“Mom’s not here. ”
I wrote in the upper right quadrant: chocolate.
Aiden, my middle child, asked, “Dad, what are you doing ”
“You’ll see in a second. ” I pointed at the second area. “How about ice cream ”
Alex started dancing around in a circle.
“When we get four options written on the spinner, we’ll spin to see what we do for dinner tonight. ”
My youngest said, “Dress up like superheroes. ”
“ Absolutely!” I wrote superheroes, with no idea how that would turn into a dinner idea. They debated the final section for a few seconds and then collectively decided on pizza. If they had suggested “Run around at the mall, ” I would have written it down.
I smoothed out the paper, tested the spinner, and then set it in the middle of the table.
We gathered around the spinner, and I held up my hands. “We are going to spin it once, and whatever we land on, that’s what we’ll do tonight. ”

LESSONS LEARNED OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Mr. Gray was my history teacher in tenth grade. I couldn’t tell what kind of history he taught for two reasons: one, I never liked history, and two, my body was in class, but my mind wasn’t. Mr. Gray wasn’t the teacher who offered retakes (补考) on tests; he did so much more for me than that. He offered me a pair of ears and a shoulder to cry on.
Before Mr. Gray came along, one major event was taking place in my life. My mom told me she wanted to divorce my dad. Why then I didn’t understand. I barricaded (筑起壁垒) myself in my basement bedroom, listening to angry music and sleeping. I fell into a depression and my grades were falling. Then there was Mr. Gray.
I sat against a brick wall outside the library, knees pulled into my chest, head down, surrounded by my noisy friends that I was slowly distancing myself from, when I heard his voice: “Ever feel like you’re a fire hydrant (消防栓) and every dog in the neighborhood is stopping by to visit you ” I picked my head up and then I saw Mr. Gray.
I had heard him use this line in the classroom a few times before, when it looked like a kid was having a bad day. It usually aroused a laugh and ended there. This time was different though — he was waiting for an answer. Next thing I knew I was following him into the library.
We sat amongst the shelves of the mostly empty library for the rest of lunchtime. I don’t remember much about that first conversation other than the unconditional promise he made me of lending a pair of ears and a shoulder to cry on. What made him such a special teacher was that he saw that I was struggling and reached out to me outside of the classroom.

“Did you ever obtain any scholarship in your school or college ”
”No,“ replied the young man. ”Then who paid for your education “
“My father passed away when I was three. It was my mother who paid for my tuition fees. She’s a farmer and works all day in the fields,”said the young man.
The director nodded and asked the young man to show his hands. Though confused, the young man held out his hands hesitantly, which were smooth and soft. Then the director asked if the young man had ever helped his mother with farm work. The young man said:"No, she always wanted me to focus on my academic work. Besides, she knows her work well and could do everything much faster than I could.”
Learning the reply, the director told the young man that when he returned to his home that day,he should clean his mother’s hands, and after that, he could come back and see him and report what he learned. A Real Hero
Mindy had a pet dog. She took him for a walk every day. Usually she took him to a park near her house. The park was next to a river. Many people took their dogs there. Almost all the dog owners knew each other. They often stopped and had a talk.
For Mindy, it had been a happy place until a homeless man moved into the park. He usually slept under a tree near the river. He was very dirty. He had no teeth, and his clothes were old. He even sometimes talked to himself. Mindy was a bit frightened. When she went to the park, she tried to stay close to other dog walkers. She was unwilling to meet the scary man.
Then winter came and it was cold and wet in the park. The homeless man didn’t have warm clothes and seemed as if he couldn’t bear to go through the winter.
One morning when Mindy was walking in the park, she encountered the homeless man again. To Mindy’s surprise, he was wearing a warm yellow hat that was quite new and clean. He walked towards her, smiling and pointing at his hat. Mindy was so scared that she ran as quickly as she could. “Mindy!” one of the dog walkers called out to her. It was Alison. Mindy ran towards her.
“Mindy! He is harmless! He won’t hurt you! He just wants to show you his new hat! He is so happy,” explained Alison. But Mindy still felt bad. “I’m sorry, but where did he get the hat ” Mindy asked. “I bought it for him. I saw it in the $2 shop. It is so cold and he is so poor. I wanted to do something for him,” answered Alison. “It’s very kind of you,” said Mindy with a smile.
Over the following few days the weather became even worse. It rained all day and all night, Mindy didn’t want to enter the park. Though she felt OK, she was still afraid of the homeless man. So she just took her dog for a walk along the streets outside the park instead.

Christmas was almost here. The snow was fresh and deep on the remote mountain path. Arriving home, Ben said, “I saw two horses trapped by the heavy snow.” Father looked at Jack, the older son. “Well, go take a look. Take the rifle and some hay. If they look as if they can survive, give them the hay. If not...”
The next morning, Ben and Jack set off in the cold, crisp snow. The snowmobile sank a bit in the deep snow, but they kept going. At last they reached the clearing where the horses stood.
“They’re starving!” said Ben. One of the horses had lost a lot of hair, and their tails were almost gone. Their eyes were lifeless and tired. Jack walked around the horses. “Well,” said Jack, sighing, picking up the rifle. “There’s no way to get them down through the snow. And they look pretty bad.”
“No! No!” cried Ben. “We should try,” he pleaded. “How do we know how bad they really are Dad can get the vet!”
“Well, I don’t know,“ said Jack slowly. He walked around the horses again. He patted the big brown one on the neck. It made a sad, small groaning sound. “Maybe you’re right.”
Ben quickly got the hay and spread it around. The horses ate hungrily and Ben poured water into a pail for them.
Back at home the family had a hurried meeting.
“What if we put them on a big sled ” Jack said.
“I don’t know how we could get a sled that big up there," Dad sighed. “I think the kindest thing to do is to put them out of their misery.”
“No!” said Ben. “Well just have to shovel(铲)a path or tunnel then.”
His parents raised their eyebrows.
“That’s a long way, and a lot of snow. I don’t know if it can be done,” Dad said, “unless we have an awful lot of people shoveling.” Ben could see he was warming to the idea.
“We’ll find some!” said Ben. He grabbed his coat and boots. “Come on, Jack, let’s go!”

Abby shook her head. “I don’t think this is a good idea. ”I gave her a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure we have something eat no matter what we land on. Trust me. “ She looked at me skeptically but nodded her head in agreement. Aiden, meanwhile, was already excitedly spinning the spinner. “It’ll be pizza!” he shouted. And Alex, my youngest, was bouncing up and down in his seat, his eyes fixed on the spinner. With the anticipation building, I picked up the spinner and gave it a spin, which whirred around for a few second before finally coming to a stop. We all leaned in to see where it had landed.
Everyone screamed, “Hurray! Pizza. ”I breathed a sigh of relief and jumped up from my seat. Bright kids, let’s get started with the pizza making. Who wants to help ” I asked. All of them raised then hands high up in the air, eagerly vying for my attention. Me! Me! Me! ‘ they shouted. In the end, the pizza turned out perfectly and we all sat down to enjoy a delicious meal together. The kids beamed with pride as they took their first bites, and I felt a warm fuzzy feelig in my chest, knowing that I had created a fun and memorable experience for my children.

However, that didn’t change our classroom relationship. Every time he noticed my mind was wandering, he would call on me, trying to draw my attention back. Unsurprisingly, I still distanced myself from classmates. I still didn’t know most of the answers. But I think he knew that I was at a crossroads. Apparently, my problem needed to be addressed first outside the classroom and then in class.
More lunchtime library conversations followed throughout the school year. They always made me feel freer and I didn’t feel trapped like before. Mr. Gray who was always there unconditionally, presented me with an outlet for my pain and frustration. His presence and life wisdom enabled me to become less defensive and open up more. Gradually, the hours spent amongst the library shelves became my favorite time to take his “class”. Little as I remembered about what he taught in the history class, the lessons learned outside the classroom would never fade away.

Now this young man started to clean his mother’s hand gently. For the first time, he noticed his mother’s hands were rough with cuts and calluses. Some of the cuts were so deep that she shivered with pain when they were cleaned. It was not until that moment that the young man started to understand the sacrifice his mother had made to ensure he could get a good education. Stroking his mother’s hands with both affection and guilt, he felt a lump in his throat, tears of admiration and sorrow streaming down his face.
The following day he went to the director’s office again. His face was calm, and the excitement and pride in his eyes were replaced by sincerity and gratitude. “Thank you for this valuable lesson,” said the young man with tears glittering in his eyes. Then he continued to tell the manager that he was regretful about being an insensitive son who had been obsessed with grades and career opportunities, neglecting how his mother had suffered all these years. The manager listened attentively and finally said with a smile curving his lips, “I’m glad you’ve gained the power of appreciation, which is an essential quality in a manager. You are hired. ”

One night when Mindy was watching the TV news, the words “Homeless hero saves a man and a child!” appeared. The newsreader explained how a car crashed into the river next to the park. Though people walking dogs in the park all ran to help, the homeless man ran faster than all of them. He swiftly jumped into the river without hesitation and helped the driver out of the car. Then he managed to pull the child on the back seat out of the car. He saved the little boy as well.
The car driver was moved to tears. He shook the homeless man’s hand tightly and said he could never have lived without his son. He then promised that he would give the homeless man a big sum of money in return to express his thankfulness. But the homeless man shook his head and refused. He said with a shy smile that he just did what anyone else would have done. After hearing the news, Mindy suddenly realized what a real hero the homeless man was. So Mindy decided to do something special as well.

The two brothers went from door to door asking everyone to come and help. They went to the hardware store and the gas station, putting notices up in the grocery store and the library. They went to the bank and the hotel. Then they took the snowmobile back up the mountain with more hay and water and some warm blankets. The horses seemed happy to see them. Ben and Jack started shoveling. They worked for hours but only made a small dent in the snow. “This is hopeless,” said Jack. He leaned on his shovel and wiped his dripping nose. “Let’s go home. No one is going to help.” Ben insisted, “We can’t give up.” But his fingers were frozen, his nose numb.
Suddenly, a group of snowmobilers arrived with shovels and hot chocolate. They had followed Ben and Jack’s tracks up the trail. “Boys, take a break,” they said. “There are more coming!” People came and shoveled every day, and a deep, narrow trench very slowly worked its way down the mountain. It was almost Christmas, but no one had time to even think about that. Jack and Ben constantly went to feed and water and talk to the horses. On the seventh day, hearing muffled voices and the sound of shovels, they knew they were almost there. In a few minutes there was a cheer, two men with shovels breaking through the snow at the bottom. Everyone was celebrating and hugging each other. “We did it, Jack!” said Ben, grinning from ear to ear. “We all did it together!”
