本文是说明文。主要讲述了吸烟这一现象的变化。
8.
推理判断题。根据第一段中“Picture this:you’re switching channels and you come across an advertisement for a popular cigarette brand with doctors promoting its health benefits. Unbelievable (想象一下:你正在切换频道,看到一个流行香烟品牌的广告,医生在宣传它的健康益处。难以置信 )”可知,医生宣传香烟的健康益处,是让人难以置信的,可推断医生认为吸烟有害健康。故选A项。
9.
推理判断题。根据第三段中“There was pushback in the media against the overstatements of wealthy tobacco giants however, and it was the American issue of Reader’s Digest which regularly sounded the smoke alarm. The first story on the topic was published in its pages in 1924. “Does Tobacco Injure the Human Body ”,focused on a groundbreaking study that concluded smoking was “one of the very significant reasons fewer men than women attain old age. ”(然而,媒体反对富有的烟草巨头的夸大言论,美国的《读者文摘》定期拉响烟雾警报。关于这一主题的第一篇文章发表于1924年。“烟草对人体有害吗 ”,重点介绍了一项开创性的研究,该研究得出的结论是,吸烟是“男性比女性更少进入老年的重要原因之一”)”可知,《读者文摘》的故事揭示了吸烟导致男性的寿命比女性短。故选C项。
10.
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“In the past decade, the rate of smokers has dropped considerably. And it’s young people in particular who are turning away from smoking: 25.7 percent of 18-24 year olds smoked regularly in 2011 while in 2018 16.8 per cent did. 11.
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“A century ago, attitudes around smoking were strikingly different, and, shocking though it may now be , it was common to see health professionals give their approval to cigarette makers.(一个世纪前,人们对吸烟的态度是截然不同的,而且,尽管现在可能令人震惊,但经常能看到健康专业人士对香烟制造商表示认可)”,可知,一个世纪前,人们是认可吸烟的,在根据最后一段“In the past decade, the rate of smokers has dropped considerably. And it’s young people in particular who are turning away from smoking: 25.7 percent of 18-24 year olds smoked regularly in 2011 while in 2018 16.8 per cent did. 本文是说明文。主要介绍了可再生生物燃料目前存在的问题和好处,以及对它的展望。
12.
推理判断题。根据第一段中“Renewable biofuels could soon replace the harmful fossil fuels that we’re used to using. It’ s now well established that fossil fuels are incredibly harmful to our health and the environment and they’re not renewable, either. When so many people rely on petrol and diesel (柴油) to power vehicles, it makes sense to develop a renewable alternative that’s easy to use.(可再生生物燃料可能很快就会取代我们习惯使用的有害的化石燃料。众所周知,化石燃料对我们的健康和环境有害,而且它们也是不可再生的。当这么多人依赖汽油和柴油来驱动汽车时,开发一种易于使用的可再生替代品是有意义的)”可推知,化石燃料对我们的健康和环境有害,而且它们也是不可再生的,而生物燃料是环保和可持续的,所以要用生物燃料取代化石燃料。故选D项。
13.
主旨大意题。根据第二段中“However, first-generation biofuels like ethanol have got issues that need fixing before they can go mainstream. It curently takes more ethanol than gasoline to produce the same amount of energy, for instance. Production is expensive, and several parts of the process sometimes use fossil fuels, which means that some biofuels aren’t actually carbon-free.(然而,像乙醇这样的第一代生物燃料在成为主流之前还存在一些问题需要解决。例如,目前需要比汽油更多的乙醇才能产生同样的能量。生产成本很高,而且这个过程的几个部分有时会使用化石燃料,这意味着一些生物燃料实际上并不是零碳的)”可知,第二段主要讲述了第一代生物燃料的问题。故选D项。
14.
推理判断题。根据第四段中“ Some organisations are creating biofuels with algae (海藻) instead. This process uses water and land that often isn’t suitable for many other situations, so it doesn’t take up space that’s useful for food production, and it often has better yields (产量) than other types of biofuel components.(一些组织正在用藻类制造生物燃料。这一过程使用的水和土地通常不适合许多其他情况,因此它不会占用对粮食生产有用的空间,而且它通常比其他类型的生物燃料成分具有更好的产量)”可推知,用藻类制造生物燃料不会占用对粮食生产有用的空间,而且具有更好的产量,所以是效率更高。故选B项。
15.
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中划线单词前文“Scientists are also working on plans that will be able to abstract biofuels from household waste , wood chips and other junk-a move that could massively increase the material(科学家们还在研究从家庭垃圾、木屑和其他垃圾中提取生物燃料的计划这一举措可能会大量增加材料)”可推知,此处应该是增加可用于生物燃料生产的材料,所以viable应该是“可行的”之意,和C项“Workable”意思相近。故选C项。

King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table
By Roger Lancelyn Creen
I loved reading when I was little. I think that’s the reason I love writing for children. My parents were both English teachers, and our home was full of books. Dickens was a family favourite. But the book that really fired my imagination was King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green, which my father read to me at bedtime when I was around 12.
Diary of a Nobody
By George and Weedon Grossmith
I’m a fool for a classic, and I’m so glad I finally came across Diary of a Nobody by George and Weedon Grossmith. It began life as a serial in Punch, with text by Ceorge and illustrations by Weedon. Put simply, it’s the funniest book I’ve ever read, and the model for so many brilliant first-person narratives like Adrian Mole and Bridget Jones. The short pitch is that it follows the social climbing of a London clerk, Charles Pooter but of course it’s so much more than that, poking fun at all things from middle class.
Exhalation
By Ted Chiang
It’s never too late to have your life changed by a book, and it happened to me again recently when I read Ted Chiang’s Exhalation. Ted Chiang wrote Story of Your Life, which inspired the sci-fi alien-visitation classic Arrival. I love that too, but each and every piece in Exhalation is its match in writing skills. If there are super-intelligent aliens in the galaxy seeking to communicate important truths, Ted Chiang may well be one of them.

A.It describes a story of intelligent aliens.
B.It stimulates the author’s imagination of writing.
C.It helps the author to improve the writing skills.

2.Who has drawn pictures for the book Diary of a Nobody
A.Roger Lancelyn Green. B.George.
C.Weedon Grossmith. D.Ted Chiang.
3.Where is the text most likely from
A.A diary. B.A novel. C.A guidebook. D.A magazine.

On February 13, 2023, Wu Yibing made history, beating John Isner in a thrilling three-set final at the Dallas Open to become the first man from China to win an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) title.
Brought to a tennis court for the first time at just five, initially encouraged by his parents as an exercise to lose weight, Wu soon had his talent discovered by his provincial junior team, kicking off a journey that would change the face of men’s tennis in China. In 2017, Wu Yibing shot to prominence after winning the US Open boys’ tournament at 18 to become the first Chinese to win a major junior title, raising high hopes for the “Wonder Boy” to change the fortune of Chinese men in a sport long dominated by women’s success on the pro stage.
In 2018, Wu won his first ATP Challenger title in Shanghai. However, the brutally competitive nature of men’s pro tennis hit the rising Wu with a tough reminder after multiple injuries—to his elbow, lower back, shoulder and wrist — forced him to be away from the ATP Tour for close to three years.
He made his return last year and won three ATP Challenger titles before qualifying for the US Open. “Looking back, I feel like I wouldn’t have been here if not for the ups and downs over the past few years. I take all the setbacks and struggles as an asset that helps me mature mentally now.” said Wu. “Of course there were a lot of doubts because I had surgery and the recovery wasn’t going well The championship today was a payoff for all the hard work and everyone who’s supported me along the way.”
4.What do the underlined words “shot to prominence” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Lost weight. B.Discovered talent. C.Became famous. D.Felt uncertain.
5.Why was Wu absent from the ATP Tour for nearly three years
A.Because he feared possible failures. B.Because he refused fierce competitions.
C.Because he wanted to change his carcer.D.Because he suffered from serious physical injuries.
6.What can we learn from Wu Yibing’s statement
A.No cross, no crown. B.Well begun is half done.
C.Easy come, easy go. D.Time waits for no man.
7.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.The Development of Chinese Tennis. B.The Power of Difficulties for Athletes.
C.The Pioneer of Chinese Tennis Sport. D.The First Chinese Male Winner of ATP Title.

I know it may be hard to convince you, but let me try: Don’t kill the next spider you see in your home.
People like to think of their dwellings as safely separated from the outside world, but many types of spiders can be found inside. Some are accidentally trapped, while others are short-term visitors. Some species even enjoy the great indoors, where they happily live out their lives and make more spiders. These fellows are usually secretive, and almost all you meet are neither aggressive nor dangerous. And they may be providing services like eating pests—some even eat other spiders.
My colleagues and I conducted a visual survey of 50 North Carolina homes. Every single house we visited was home to spiders. The most common species we encountered were cobweb spiders and cellar spiders. Both build webs where they lie in wait for prey(猎物) to get caught. Cellar spiders sometimes leave their webs to hunt other spiders.
Although they are all-around predators(捕食性动物), tending to eat anything they can catch, spiders regularly capture harmful pests and even disease-carrying insects—for example, mosquitoes. There’s even a species of jumping spider that prefers to eat blood-filled mosquitoes in African homes. So killing a spider doesn’t just cost the insect its life; it may take an important predator out of your home.
It’s natural to fear spiders. They have lots of legs and almost all are venomous—though the majority of species have venom(毒液) too weak to cause issues in humans, if their fangs can pierce our skin at all. Even entomologists themselves can fall prey to arachnophobia(蜘蛛恐惧症). I know a few spider researchers who overcame their fear by observing and working with these fascinating creatures. If they can do it, so can you!
8.What is a common misunderstanding of spiders according to Paragraph 2
A.They can be trapped easily.
B.They often attack human beings.
C.They are friendly to human beings.
D.They live far away from human beings.
9.What will happen if you kill a spider in your home
A.Losing a great assistant. B.Catching more insects.
C.Developing rare diseases. D.Rescuing other insects.
10.How can people get over their fear of spiders
A.By discovering their habitats. B.By protecting their skin.
C.By getting along with them. D.By recognizing their venom.
11.What does the text suggest people do about spiders
A.Spare spiders. B.Monitor spiders. C.Defeat spiders. D.Control spiders.

If you ask something of ChatGPT, an artificial-intelligence(AI) tool, you may immediately get the responses, completely certain and often wrong. The questions raised by technologies like ChatGPT cause much more tentative answers. But they are ones that managers ought to start asking.
One issue is how to deal with employees’ concerns about job security. Worries are natural. An AI that makes it easier to process your expenses is one thing; an AI that people would prefer to sit next to at a dinner party quite another. Being clear about how workers would redirect time and energy that is freed up by an AI helps foster acceptance. So does creating a sense of agency: research conducted by MIT Sloan Management Review and the Boston Consulting Group found that an ability to override an AI makes employees more likely to use it.
Arthur Jago of the University of Washington and Glenn Carroll of the Stanford Graduate School of Business investigate how willing people are to give rather than earn credit—specifically for work that someone did not do on their own. They showed volunteers something attributed to a specific person — an artwork, say, or a business plan — and then revealed that it had been created either with the help of an algorithm or with the help of human assistants. Everyone gave less credit to producers when they were told they had been helped, but this effect was more pronounced for work that involved human assistants.
The picture that emerges from such research is messy. It is also dynamic: just as technologies evolve, so will attitudes. But it is crystal-clear on one thing. The impact of ChatGPT and other AIs will depend not just on what they can do, but also on how they make people feel.
12.What should managers take into consideration when using technologies like ChatGPT
A.Skills used for them. B.Issues caused by them.
C.Accuracy ensured in them. D.Alternatives discovered for them.
13.What can we learn about employees’ attitude towards AI from Paragraph 2
A.They find it can make their work more complicated.
B.They think it is a threat for AI to replace them at work.
C.They consider it’s normal for AI to finish all their work.
D.They feel it’s vital for them to acknowledge its abilities.
14.What did the volunteers think of a task accomplished with AI algorithm
A.They thought little of it. B.They were unaware of it.
C.They spoke highly of it. D.They felt envious about it.
15.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.The limitation of AI. B.The importance of Chat GPT
C.The relationship between AI and humans.D.The practical application of Chat GPT.
2023届安徽省马鞍山市高三4月第二次教学质量监测英语试卷
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Deserts are dry ecosystems that receive less than 250 millimetres of rainfall a year on average. Here are the world's several big deserts.
Antarctic Desert
Antarctica is, on average, the coldest, windiest and driest of all the world's continents. With an average annual rainfall of just 166 millimetres along the coastal regions and even less farther inland, it meets the standard of a desert. The continent has only plants that can live in a region so cold and dry.
Australian Desert
The Australian desert consists of ten interlinked smaller deserts. Together, they cover 18 percent of the mainland and contribute to making Australia the world's second driest continent. The deserts are far from deserted, populated by native animals like kangaroos.
Arabian Desert
The Arabian Desert covers the entire Arabian Peninsula and contains the Rub'al-Khali, one of the world's largest continuous bodies of sand. Bedouins, the native people, have crossed these sands for centuries, driving sheep, cattle, camels and goats into the desert during the rainy winter season and moving back toward farmland during the dry summer months.
Kalahari Desert
Strictly speaking, the Kalahari doesn't meet the standard of a desert as its wettest regions can receive more than 500 millimetres of rain in very wet years. However, it remains extremely dry. Rain filters(渗入)rapidly through the vast expanses of sand, leaving nothing on the surface. The evaporation (蒸发) rate is twice as great as the rainfall in the southwestern half of the Kalahari. The desert is home to several important national parks and reserves, providing
shelters for various species.
21. Which desert is made up of smaller deserts
A. Antarctic Desert. B. Australian Desert. C. Arabian Desert. D. Kalahari Desert.
22. What do we know about Bedouins
A. They are on the move. B. They are good at growing plants.
C. They come from Australia. D. They benefit from local tourism.
23. What is special about Kalahari Desert
A. It has enough rainfalls. B. It covers a big area C. It is poorly protected. D. It dries up quickly.
B
I have always had pets. My first animal friends were guinea pigs. And then I tried my best to persuade my parents to get a dog. For some reason they did not seem to believe I would walk the dog three times a day, no matter how hard I tried.
Then my mother said a friend's cat had had kittens and we could go and get one. At first I was disappointed, but with time I learned to love our cat so much I have had cats ever since.
I just have to remember to bolt everything into place. If I don't, things fly (they seem to get airborne when cats are around —— the more expensive an object is, the more it seems to enjoy flying).
Also, watering plants is no problem. During the years all the plants have disappeared except the cactuses (仙人掌). They don't seem to interest cats much. Nor do they need much water. It would be nice to get flowers, but I do advise against anyone bringing them to me. No matter what flower - it is considered a kitty snack.
Changing furniture is nice too. Cats help in letting us know when it is time to change the sofa. Either when the fabric starts to look like Einstein's hair that has been combed with cats' paws (爪子), or when no amount of vacuuming (用吸尘器打扫) helps in revealing the original color of the couch, thanks to the generous donation of cat hair. A soft sofa is nice, sure, but it sort of gets a bit embarrassing when, all our guests leave the house with fur-trousers.
I could go on and on to tell you more interesting stories between us next time!
24. Why did the author's parents turn him down when he wanted to have a dog
A. They didn't favour dogs. B. They didn't think he could attend dogs well.
C. They had already had a pet. D. They thought dogs might mess the house up.
25. Which of the following can explain “bolt everything into place” underlined in paragraph 3
A. Keep everything fastened. B. Keep everything organized.
C. Have everything prepared. D. Have everything repaired.
26. What can we infer about the plants from paragraph 4
A. They are replaced by new ones. B. They are sent to the guests.
C. They are mostly eaten by the cats. D. They are frequently watered.
27. What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A. To complain about his cats. B. To share fun experiences of petting cats.
C. To compare his different pets. D. To introduce his skills for keeping pets.

Accompanied by typical Jin opera music, a red-faced performer with a long beard showed up at the
hall of a high school in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. All the students in the hall stood up and craned (伸长)
their necks to get a better look. In their eyes, Jin opera was something from the past.
They are not alone. It goes without saying that kids nowadays are much more familiar with popular
music than traditional opera, which is why performing artist Wu Lingyun, together with his colleagues,
goes to campuses to promote the art.
Wu Lingyun is best known for his role as Guan Gong, a general during the late Han Dynasty period.
Wu began playing the role in 1985, at the age of 21, and has been associated with it ever since.
Wu was significantly influenced by his parents, both of whom are also famous Jin opera performers. With a natural talent for performing and great effort, Wu was soon recognized by audiences and later awarded the Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Award in 2000, the highest award for Chinese drama performing arts.
Given Wu's considerable fame, one might think he would now prefer to enjoy a life of leisure. However, this is far from the case. Deep down, Wu has a big dream. He pictures a growing future for Jin opera. Wu expected more chances for more people to get to know about the art, hoping Jin opera could become a worldwide art.
Wu has also made some changes to the traditional art to bring it up-to-date.“Jin opera should keep pace with the times if we want to bring it back to life and get the young generation to accept it," he says. “An art without life can never survive""
28. How did the students react to the performance at the hall
A. They became bored. B. They got disappointed. C. They felt curious. D. They looked casual
29. What do we know about Wu Lingyun
A. He got a top award in 2000. B. He started his performance in his teens.
C. He now enjoys a leisure life. D. He became famous because of his parents.
30. What does Wu Lingyun expect of Jin opera
A. It'll be studied as a college major. B. It'll be officially recognized.
C. It'll have an easier performing form. D. It'll be popular across the world.
31. Which of the following best describes Wu Lingyun
A. Humorous. B. kind-minded. C. Cautious. D. Devoted.
D
To give grasshoppers (蚱蜢) some credit一jumping across yards and between branches takes a lot more expertise than it might appear. There are incredibly tiny factors to consider, such as the resistance in launch surface, as well as desired distance, speed, and landing.
Most jumping robots can't compete with the insect, as their jumps are limited to starting atop extremely rigid surfaces. But a new bouncing robot developed by researchers in Carnegie Mellon's College of Engineering is crossing those barriers, and showing promise for how autonomous devices could operate in the future.
A team of scientists led by professor of mechanical engineering Sarah Bergbreiter recently optimized a robot's latch mechanisms (弹簧机制) used to boost it upward. Previously, these latches were primarily thought of as simple “on/off switches that enabled the release of stored energy. However, Bergbreiter and her team employed mathematical modeling to illustrate that these latches both were capable of controlling energy output, as well as controlling the transfer (传递) of energy between the jumper and the launch surface.
To test their work, the team positioned a small jumping robot atop a tree branch and recorded the precise
energy transfers in its jumps' first moments.“We found that the latch can not only mediate (调节)energy output
but can also mediate energy transfer between the jumper and the environment that it is jumping from," said
Bergbreiter.
Now that researchers better understand the interactions at play in the opening moments of jumping, they can
now begin working on ways to integrate this into future robotic designs. “It has been nearly impossible to design controlled insect-sized robots because they are launched in just milliseconds," explained Bergbreiter. “Now, we have more control over whether our robots are jumping up one foot or three... It's really fascinating that the latch一something that we already need in our robots— can be used to control outputs that we couldn't have controlled before.”
32. What does the author want to show about the new robot by mentioning grasshoppers
A. It comes with technical difficulties. B. It can beat the insect easily.
C. It is the first one designed for jumping. D. It is shaped like the tiny creature.
33. What advantage do latches designed by Bergbreiter have over the traditional ones

34. What does Bergbreiter think of their work
A. It has changed their research direction. B. It inspires new applications of robots.
C. It brings them a sense of achievement. D. It will make robots smaller and lighter.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. A new model for future robots. B. A step forward in robot design.

A few years ago I went shopping with a friend for a now motorcycle. He didn’t have a particular make or model in mind. His only two critteria A big engine—since too much horsepower is never enough—and since he’s tall, a relativety relaxed riding position.
I suggested a Hayabusa, which met his criteria. Or an XS-14R. Both were within his budget, especially the Hayabusa since the dealer was offering a $2.500 discount on a previous year’s model.
He rode them both and loved them both.
Then he became very interested in a ZX-6R KRT. Great motorcycle, sure. But a much smaller motor. And a riding position that made him look like a contorted mantis(变形的螳螂). It seemed like an odd choice.
Until it hit me. The purchase of any motorcycle 750cc and under came with a free helmet.
Since my friend also wanted a new helmet, getting one for free was extremely appealing.
After all the math didn’t work. We eventually negotiated $3,200 off the price of the Hayabusa. The free helmet was only worth $250.
A 2017 study published in Marketing Science found that people tend to significantly overvalue “free”. When faced with a choice of selecting one of several available products, people will choose the option with the highest cost-benefit difference, however, decisions about free (zero-price) products differ, in that people do not simply take away costs from benefits but instead consider the benefits associated with free products as
Two months later my fiend traded in his 6R for a 14R. But don’t think badly of him. We’ve all been blinded by the power of “free”.
So whenever something is free, stop and consider the intent, and see “free” as a reason to do even more math.
4.What kind of motorcycle did the author’s friend intend to buy
A.A good second-hand one.
B.A previous year’s Hayabusa.
C.A highly fashionable XS-14R
D.A powerful and comfortable one.
5.What aspect of the ZX-6R KRT deal attracted the author’s friend most
A.Its price. B.Its free gift.
C.Its 750cc engine. D.Its classical design.
6.Why does the author mention the 2017 study
A.To offer his friend a better purchase plan.
B.To stress the importance of negotiating skills.
C.To tell readers how to get more zero-price products.
D.To explain why his friend made such an unwise choice.
7.What would be the best title for the text
A.It’s time to stop doing the math
B.Getting something for free is so fun
C.“Free” is sometimes the worst deal
D.We all love to buy something on sale.

A team of researchers from the University of Groningen, the University of Tuscia, Roflight, Lemselobrink and the Royal Netherlands Air Force has designed, built and tested a robot named RobotFalcon fashioned to look and fly like a peregrine falcon(游隼)as a means of driving off flocks(群)of birds around airports.
Birds, whether alone or in flocks, are a menace to flying planes. When a plane strikes a bird, damage will be caused-occasionally with disastrous results. The plane that famously landed on the Hudson River in 2009, for example, was damaged by birds entering the plane’s engines accidentally, causing their failure.
Scientists have been working on ways to prevent birds from entering flight spaces but thus far have met with only partial success. Currently drones(无人机)are used to scare birds away, as are trained falcons arid systems that make sounds of birds in great pain.
In this how effort, the researchers took a new approach - they designed a remote-controlled flying robot just like a peregrine falcon that catches and kills other birds, which therefore try to avoid it.
The result is the RobotFalcon, which is painted to look like a real peregrine falcon and is powered by an internal engine. To capably copy the flying patterns of a falcon, the researchers studied the flying characteristics of real birds and then added features to their robot bird that would allow it to fly in similar ways.
During field tests, the robot bird scared away entire flocks of birds within five minutes of arrival: on half of these flights, it was able to clear the field within 70 seconds. The team conducted multiple tests with the same flock of birds over three months and found no habituation - they were afraid of it no matter how often they saw it.

As the year 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit in China, many brand have rolled out an array of rabbit-themed goods. Wang Chuchun, an 18-year-old freshman from Xiamen University in Fujian, bought a pair of shoes from the rabbit collection made by Holli, a domestic brand, during the Spring Festival holiday.
“I would like to see Chinese culture be more incorporated into consumer goods that carry a variety of beautiful connotations(内涵).” Wang told journalist.
Guochao, the combination of Chinese traditions with modern designs, has become a keyword for this year’s Spring Festival product consumption, according to statistics from Vipshop(also known as weipinhui in Chinese), an online retailer(零售商). The sales volume of 361 Degrees, a sports equipment company, saw a rise of 188 percent on a year-on-year basis during the Spring Festival with their rabbit collection.
Who is behind the surge of sales for guochao products According to a report released by data service provider Aurora, the proportion of young people interested in the guochao products accounted for more than 70 percent of consumers.
Thus the target market of the guochao products is China’s 400 million-strong army of young consumers, Tom Harper, a lecturer in international relations at the University of East London, said to The Conversation.
Like their peers in Western countries, China’s Gen Z consumers are enthusiastic users of social media; but that is where the similarities end.
This generation has grown up during China’s rapid economic development in the 2000s and 2010s, which is a marked contrast to their peers in the West, who came of age, in the shadow of the2008 financial crisis. As a result, they have been characterized as being more confident and better educated than previous generations.
“Complex and profound social and cultural factor have contributed to the rise of guochao. But it all comes down to decades of stable development in China. As our country enters an era of prosperity(繁荣), our cultural confidence gets boosted as well,” said Wang.
12.Why is Wang Chuchun’s experience mentioned at the beginning of the text
A.To illustrate what young people like to buy.
B.To lead up to the topic of the guochao trend.
C.To show the popularity of rabbit-themed goods.
D.To stress the rising influence of domestic brands.
13.What aspect of guochao products does paragraph 3 focus on
A.Their targets. B.Their features.
C.Their popularity. D.Their market potential
14.What can be inferred about China’s Gen Z consumers
A.Their shopping habits are mainly driven by social media.
B.They have benefited from rapid growth in economy
C.They’re more confident than their Western peers.
D.They’ve been deeply affected by the financial crisis.
15.What is the fundamental reason for the rise of guochao according to Wang
A.China’s stable development.
B.China’s social and cultural factors.
C.The popularity of social media.
D.Young people’s rising cultural confidence.

The day before we met, Juliette Binoche was in the French Alps. Today , she’s sitting in her room in Berlin’s Hotel Marriott.“We arrived last night at 12,”she says, casually brushing off her tight schedule. It ‘s been this way for four decades now , ever since she became a real hit at the Cannes FilmFestival as a 21-year-old , starring in 1985’s Rendez-vous. Picture this:you’re switching channels and you come across an advertisement for a popular cigarette brand with doctors promoting its health benefits. Unbelievable Think again. A century ago, attitudes around smoking were strikingly different, and, shocking though it may now be, it was common to see health professionals give their approval to cigarette makers.
In a jaw-dropping state of affairs , doctors weren’t the only ones to promote smoking —in fact , during the first run of the cartoon show The Flintstones in 1960, its official sponsor was Winston cigarettes, and in one advertising session, the characters Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble are seen smoking a pack together, with the latter remarking:“It tastes good, like a cigarette should.”
There was pushback in the media against the overstatements of wealthy tobacco giants (巨头) however, and it was the American issue of Reader’s Digest which regularly sounded the smoke alarm. The first story on the topic was published in its pages in 1924.“Does Tobacco Injure the Human Body ”, focused on a groundbreaking study that concluded smoking was “one of the very significant reasons fewer men than women attain old age. ”Another story published in 1952 called “Cancer by the Carton” was credited with contributing to the largest drop in cigarette smoking since the Great Depression.
Smoking has lost its cool factor in recent decades, and the number of smokers across the country continues to steadily decline. In 1922 over 65,000 tons of tobacco were sold in the UK , reaching a peak of 125,960 tons sold in 1961. Due to growing public awareness of smoking’ s harmful health effects, by 2014 that figure had dropped to 43,793 tons.
In the past decade, the rate of smokers has dropped considerably. And it’s young people in particular who are turning away from smoking: 25.7 percent of 18-24 year olds smoked regularly in 2011 while in 2018 16.8 per cent did. Hear that It’ s the collective sound of lungs breathing again.

Wheat and corn are used to make bread, pizza and other delicious foods, but in a few years they could also power your car. Renewable biofuels could soon replace the harmful fossil fuels that we’re used to using. It’s now well established that fossil fuels are incredibly harmful to our health and the environment and they’re not renewable, either. When so many people rely on petrol and diesel (柴油) to power vehicles, it makes sense to develop a renewable alternative that’s easy to use.
That’s where biofuel comes in. The most common biofuel produced globally is ethanol (乙醇), and it’s used frequently in Brazil and the US, while biodiesel is more popular in Europe. However, first-generation biofuels like ethanol have got issues that need fixing before they can go mainstream. It curently takes more ethanol than gasoline to produce the same amount of energy, for instance. Production is expensive, and several parts of the process sometimes use fossil fuels, which means that some biofuels aren’t actually carbon-free.
Some environmental campaigners also say that it would be more useful to grow crops for food rather than biofuel, and that growing crops for biofuel can cause problems with soil loss and deforestation. Using land for fuel rather than food can lead to an increase in food prices, too, and can affect natural habitats.
Crop and fat-based biofunels may not be perfect, but those aren’t the only biofuels available. Some organisations are creating biofuels with algae (海藻) instead. This process uses water and land that often isn’t suitable for many other situations, so it doesn’t take up space that’s useful for food production, and it often has better yields (产量) than other types of biofuel components.
There’s plenty of development beyond algae, too. Some companies even use seaweed. Scientists are also working on plans that will be able to abstract biofuels from household waste, wood chips and other junk — a move that could massively increase the material that’s viable for biofuel production. These second-generation biofuels could make biofuel far cheaper and more accessible, and help cut emissions down.
12.Why are biofuels supposed to replace fossil fuels
A.Fossil fuels are difcult to produce.
B.Fossil fuels are harmful to vehicles.
C.Biofuels are economical and attainable.
D.Biofuels are eco-friendly and sustainable.
13.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The potential of gasoline.
B.The advantages of biofuels.
C.The popularity of ethanol in Europe.
D.The problems with first-generation biofuels.
14.Why is algae used to create biofuels by some organisations
A.It can reduce soil loss.
B.It is often more productive.
C.It occupies no land to grow.
D.It helps to lower food prices.
15.What does the underlined word “viable” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Stable. B.Durable.
C.Workable. D.Flexible

Miss Baugh taught seventh-grade social studies. She was the kind of teacher that perhaps everyone has had at least once: scary. In class, she always taught us to take school seriously. She had been teaching for a long time and I was as afraid of her as anyone, including the boys who were typically naughty in the back row.
But I also had a life outside of school and had just discovered cheap objects for pranks. One such prop (道具) had two parts: an ink bottle painted to look as though it had overturned, and a piece of shiny black metal shaped like a pool.
Of all the people I could have tricked, unexpectedly I chose Miss Baugh. At the beginning of the class, I opened her book and placed the props on one of the pages. Then I waited for the fun. When Miss Baugh saw the bottle and the spilled ink", she let out a little cry and looked for something to wipe up the ink with. The trick had succeeded beyond my expectations. But then 1 suddenly knew I had no control over what would happen next. When Miss Baugh tried to remove the ink with a paper towel, she discovered it was just a piece of black metal. She picked it up, her eyes sweeping the classroom with a deadly gaze. Then came the question: “Who did this "
After some hesitation, I raised my hand. Miss Baugh fixed me with a stare that terrified me, and my classmates. And then, most unexpectedly, she laughed. “Well, it certainly fooled me!" she said. She returned the props to me, and for a few seconds a sweet little aged lady appeared right where Miss Baugh stood.
We got back to having a class. But something had changed for me. I began to realize that, if
someone like Miss Baugh had a warm heart beneath that crusty(冷峻的) surface, then other crusty people would probably do, too. That may have been the most valuable lesson I learned.
24. Which words best describe Miss Baugh according to paragraph 1
A. Serious and experienced. B. Easy-going and selfless.
C. Naughty and demanding. D. Scary and narrow-minded.
25. What does the underlined word “pranks" probably mean in paragraph 2
A. Bets. B. Experiments. C. Tricks. D. Strategies.
26. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A. Miss Baugh's stare wasn't as terrifying as before.
B. The author was given away and finally raised his hand.
C. Miss Baugh burst into laughter and gave the props back.
D. A little aged lady entered the classroom to give a lecture.
27. What valuable lesson did the author learn
A. Crusty people can be easily changed.
B. Crusty people may be friendly to others.
C. Crusty people are difficult to get along with.
D. Crusty people are sensitive to others' feelings.
C
People say “a picture is worth a thousand words", but if you look at books and movies based on them, you may question this common saying. Many times great words end up being turned into unsuccessful movies.
Good movies need good stories. If so, why has one of the earliest and greatest works in Western storytelling, The Odyssey, never had an equally great movie based on it Movies need strong characters. So why have the movies based on The Great Gatsby never been praised as “great" Movies of course need impressive images, so why has Alice in Wonderland only resulted in movies best described as“interesting
One of the key reasons behind this is that while a book usually takes a few days to read, a movie typically lasts under two hours. This means that great books can lose plot details and characters when they move to the big screen. Even the highly successful Harry Potter movies can't escape from it, with fans of the books disappointed not to see some of their favorite characters in the movie versions.
Movies also disappoint us when things don't look the way we imagined them in the books. Take, for example, the epic movie Troy, which is in part based on The Iliad and was met with mixed reviews from the audience. The most questionable issue was the actress chosen to play the part of Helen. Many people thought she didn't live up to Helen's title of “the most beautiful woman in the world", influencing opinions of the movie to some extent.
There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes. Furthermore, books and movies are two different forms of media and therefore have different rules. With this in mind, perhaps we should judge a movie in its own right, and not against its original source.
28. What is the function of paragraph 1
A. To explain a concept. B. To quote a saying.
C. To support an argument. D. To introduce the topic. .
29. Why are some fans disappointed with the Harry Potter movies
A. They cannot afford the tickets.
B. The movies are dull and boring.
C. Their favorite characters are not included.
D. Their parents prevent them watching movies.
30. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Great books mean successful movies. B. We judge a movie in a similar way.
C. Great movies have their own rules. D. We judge a movie by its original source.
31. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. Good books, bad movies B. Good books, good movies!
C. How to make good movies D. How to adapt good books
D
AI is currently being used in various ways. So what does that mean Does it mean the world will soon be overrun by robots However, when it comes to customer service, AI cannot completely replace human interaction, for now at least.
Actually, all customer service interactions have two aspects: emotion and urgency. New AI tools can handle high-urgency situations quickly, but as to high-emotion situations, no AI can deal with them successfully. A robot might be able to recognize you're trying to check in for a flight recently canceled, but the emotional aspect is entirely un-programmable. Perhaps the passenger has increasingly high emotions about the flight being canceled because he is flying to an important business meeting. Cases like this can create high-stress moments for the customer. Only a person can understand the difference.
High-stress moments tend to stay with customers forever, so it's important to have a plan in place. Good companies are better at determining which cases AI can handle on its own and which cases need to be handled by a human with AI assistance. In high-emotion cases, there's no substitute (替补) for the personal touch of a human. Passengers whose luggage is lost are going to seek out an employee to help them locate their bags. Although AI can be used to locate their bags, it can hardly deal with passengers' high emotions.
The conversation around AI now is too focused on the question of how AI can replace human interaction, which is missing the point. The aim of AI shouldn't be to replace human interaction, but to improve it. The question here won't be how far we can push Al, but how we can use our imagination to continue reinventing (改良) the problem-solving process.
