Today, I’ve been recording an audiobook. I am excited that I have realized my life-long dream.
I will never forget at primary school I used to wait with breathless anticipation to take my turn reading out a paragraph of great works in front. At my secondary school, when students were encouraged to select and present a reading at “morning talk”, I often added my name to the list.
This was all handy background for my career in broadcasting. But, much as I enjoy hosting shows and interviewing people, I often find myself missing the simple pleasures of reading out loud. I’d thought about putting myself forward as a narrator(朗读者) for audiobooks. But I’m not an actor. I can’t do regional accents or play female voice. Non-fiction, then, seemed the obvious target, but I felt that such books were best read by their authors. If it were authors’ own voice, their stories would touch me.
Recently, delivering my son’s nightly bedtime story has reawakened my love for reading out loud—highlights so far have included Charlotte’s Web. But I never thought I’d get the opportunity to do it professionally.
Then, last month, I was contacted by James Plunkett, author of End State, a forthcoming book about political ideas. He had no desire to read his book out loud, but as a fan of my program, he thought I might do a reasonable job.
So, I’ve spent this week in a studio, simply reading stuff out loud. And I’m LOVING IT!
Mind you, it’s an entirely unexpected experience. It’s disheartening when the recording needs to be stopped because I’ve just carelessly skipped over a ‘ the’, or had to clear my throat, or catch my breath. I’ve also learned how many words I’ve been mispronouncing my entire life: behavioral is BE-HAYVE-YOU-RAL, not BE-HAYVE-EE-AH-RUL.
Though tackling this 339-page book doesn’t turn out to be that easy, I’ve found the whole process awesome, and hope this becomes the first of many.;
4.What does the author want to show by mentioning his experiences at school
A.The purpose of schooling. B.His love for reading aloud.
C.The power of encouragement. D.His talent for silent reading.;
5.What can we learn about the author from paragraph 3
A.He regrets being a TV host. B.He doesn’t like non-fiction at all.
C.He lacks working experience. D.He is aware of his disadvantages.;
6.Why could the author get the job as a narrator
A.Because he was specifically invited. B.Because he applied for it in person.
C.Because he read many bedtime stories. D.Because he had a big crowd of fans.;
7.What does the author think of being a narrator
A.Frightening but profitable. B.Rewarding but unsafe.
C.Demanding but enjoyable. D.Promising but unstable.

Many animals and plants are endangered in the world today. These endangered species are threatened with becoming extinct, meaning they will no longer exist on Earth. Examples include the Cuban Macaw and the Sri Lankan Legume Tree. Illegal hunting, and collecting of the Macaw bird for pets, led to its extinction. While the main reason the native Sri Lankan Legume Tree went extinct was due to habitat loss from development in the 20th century. The main cause for animals and plants disappearing is often a damage to the food chain due to hunting, habitat loss or even the introduction of invasive species.
Every living thing from one-celled animals to a blue whale needs to eat. Nature is connected and controlled by many fragile food chains. A food chain describes who eats whom in a habitat. When one of the links in a food chain is no longer present —for example, a species goes extinct—the food chain breaks and sometimes this can cause other animals to disappear and the whole system can become imbalanced or even collapsed.
Humans can have disastrous effects on food chains. When people first explored the world, they took animal and plant species from their home countries to the places they explored and settled in. They did not realise the consequences of introducing invasive species. By doing so, they were damaging the natural food chains of the areas they explored.
Nowadays there are strict rules controlling the movement of animals and plants between countries. But some parts of the world are still experiencing problems with invasive species introduced hundreds of years ago.
With rising awareness of how we affect the natural environment, hopefully we can learn to protect these food chains and help them to thrive. Otherwise the continued loss of species will eventually mean our own extinction.;
8.Which is the main reason for Cuban Macaw’s extinction
A.Habitat loss. B.Illegal hunting.
C.Invasive species. D.Food chain damage.;
9.What do we know about a food chain in paragraph 2
A.It only affects one-celled animals.
B.It is always broken by invasive species.
C.It decides the balance of the whole system.
D.It breaks after nearly ten species disappear.;
10.How do humans seriously affect food chains
A.By exploring new places.
B.By hunting endangered animals.
C.By introducing invasive species.
D.By polluting natural environment.;
11.Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.Damage of Invasive Species
B.Effect of Illegal Hunting on a Habitat
C.Disappearance of Endangered Species
D.The Link between Food Chains and Extinction

When you’re working your way through one of life’s storms, it is human nature to focus on getting back to normal, to “bounce back” as quickly as possible to a place where things are calm, familiar and comfortable.
However, actually it is unrealistic to think we can ever truly return emotionally and intelligently to where we were before the storm because every experience changes us in some way. For example, when we experience a major health scare, possibly involving some hospital time, we can never go back to being the person we were before the event even if we fully recover because we have experienced firsthand the fragility(脆弱) of life, not to mention coming face to face with death.
So, now that we can never return, what should we do
Consider this …how is it that two people can be faced with the same hardship and while one becomes hopeless and feels anger and upset, the other is able to overcome their circumstances and grow stronger than ever as a result of the experience
At one extreme, we may choose to accept the role of unlucky victim, or become trapped in the “Why is it always me!” negative and frustrating(令人沮丧的) situations. Either way is the result of a fixed mindset(思维模式) that is resistant to growth and change. If this is your approach to life, you will be far less likely to be active in effectively managing change and recovering from bad situations.
But there is another choice. If you are honest enough, you may consider what was once “normal” for you was just the main cause of your storm. You can choose to hug change and uncertainty and learn to grow forward through all of your experiences. Of course, this means doing the work to develop the skills and habits that will enable you to handle life’s occasional storms.
In conclusion, it is up to each of us to choose the meaning we apply to our situations at all times. Different choices will lead to different lives. Of course you can grow forward if you are determined to choose live a positive life regardless of whatever hardships you are facing.
12.What does the author try to convey with the example in the second paragraph
A.We will understand life much better after an escape from death.
B.It usually takes a long time to recover from a health problem.
C.It’s unlikely to return to where we were after certain events.
D.We can recover from an emotional problem much more easily.
13.When faced with hardships, some people choose to be a victim because of .
A.their terrible experiences B.their negative thoughts
C.their poor health D.their bad luck
14.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To advise us to manage bad emotions.
B.To persuade us to get back to normal.
C.To offer us useful skills to work with.
D.To encourage us to overcome hardships.
15.If you’re determined to grow forward you have to .
A.experience life’s fragility B.welcome uncertainty and change
C.develop new skills and habits D.overcome the fear of death
