I received a private message on Facebook. It began harmlessly enough: “Hey, girl. Want to invite you to join my next challenge group — we’ll be focusing on fitting in 30 minutes of exercise and balanced nutrition.”
It was all becoming too much. Facebook was running my life, not me.
But what killed Facebook for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “likes” it had got. His question was a wake-up call.
“Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval. I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly set him a bad example.
Before Facebook, surfing the Internet was an occasional distraction and I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines. I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls.
To recreate the simplicity of those days and set a healthier example to my son, I deactivated my Facebook account.
I’d been in the habit of checking Facebook many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits. I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me. I rediscovered knitting. I started taking yoga classes.
I started to remember a few things. My body is fine just the way it is. I have friends who will help me out when I’m in trouble, and I will help them out. I do my best to be a good mother, and our son is happy and healthy. We are very lucky to be able to afford two vacations a year.
I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone. I felt completely present in the moment.
The break left me feeling better about myself, my family, my home and my life.
After a few weeks, I returned to Facebook. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family far and wide. I look in on a daily basis, but no longer with the desire constantly to post updates.
It is not an addiction any more.

Your chair is your enemy.
It doesn’t matter if you go running every morning, or you’re a regular at the gym. If you spend most of the rest of the day sitting, you are putting yourself at increased chance of heart disease, cancers and an early death. In other words, even if you exercise energetically, sitting for long periods is bad for you.
So what’s wrong with sitting One is that sitting is one of the most passive things you can do. You burn more energy by chewing gum than you do sitting still in a pared to sitting, standing in one place is hard work. To stand, you have to tense your leg muscles, and the muscles of your back and shoulders. While standing, you often change from leg to leg. All of this burns energy.
For many people, weight gain is a matter of slow increase. Thus, a little more time on your feet today and tomorrow can easily make the difference between remaining thin and getting fat. So part of the problem with sitting a lot is that you don’t use as much energy as those who spend more time on their feet. This makes it easier to gain weight, and makes you more likely to suffer from the health problems that fatness often brings.
Some people have advanced solutions: replace your sit-down desk with a stand-up desk. Make sure that your television can only operate if you are practising on an exercise bike. Replace your office chair with a therapy ball: this too uses more muscles, and more energy, than a normal chair, because you have to support your back and work to keep balanced. But whatever you choose, know this. It is clear: be careful of your chair.
8. The main purpose of writing this passage is to _____.
A. suggest sitting less B. advise exercising often
C. avoid gaining weight D. escape standing more
9. From this passage, we know that _____.
A. standing burns nearly as much energy as sitting still does
B. taking exercise regularly but sitting more will do good
C. less exercise will reduce the chance of having disease
D. energy-burning activities will help you enjoy good health
10. The underlined word “This” in paragraph 4 refers to “_____”.
A. Gaining weight B. Burning energy
C. Sitting too much D. Standing more
11. A therapy ball is mentioned in the last paragraph to _____.
A. tell us to walk while working in the office
B. suggest a way to settle the sitting problem
C. support our back and keep us balanced
D. provide a better cure for our backache
D
Getting less than five hours of sleep in mid-to-late life could be linked to an increased risk of developing at least two chronic (慢性的) diseases, according to a new study. The research analyzed the effect of sleep time on the health of more than 7,000 men and women over 50. Researchers examined the relationship between how long each participant slept for and whether they had two or more chronic diseases over the course of 25 years.
People who were reported getting five hours of sleep or less at age 50 were 20% more likely to have two or more chronic diseases, as opposed to people who slept for up to seven hours. Additionally, sleeping for five hours or less was linked to a 30% to 40% increased risk of multimorbidity (多病症) when compared with those who slept for up to seven hours.
Lead author, Dr Sabia, said: “To ensure a better night’s sleep, it is important to promote good sleep, such as making sure the bedroom is quiet, dark and with a comfortable temperature before sleeping. It’s also advised to remove electronic devices and avoid large meals before bedtime. Physical activity and being exposed to light during the day might also promote good sleep.”
Dr Sabia said, “Short sleep increases the risk of chronic diseases that in turn increase the risk of death. However, if a participant has already suffered from a chronic condition, then long sleep time is associated with around a 35% increased risk of developing another illness. Researchers believe this could be due to unnoticed health conditions impacting sleep.” Dr. Sabia added, “This research adds to a growing body of research that highlights how important it is to get a good night’s sleep.”
12. How did the experts carry out the study in paragraph 2
A. By making contrasts.
B. By having interviews.
C. By conducting online surveys.

13. Which of the following will increase the quality of a night’s sleep
A. Being exposed to light at night.
B. Avoiding phone use before bedtime.
C. Limiting physical exercise in the day.
D. Finding a bright and peaceful bedroom.
14. What can we infer from what Dr Sabia said in paragraph 4
A. Short sleep may increase deaths by 35%.
B. Lack of sleep directly leads to more deaths.
C. The longer you sleep, the more diseases you will have.
D. The research further stresses the importance of good sleep.
15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Longer Sleep, Better Health
B. Shorter Sleep, Fewer Risks
C. Less Sleep, Poorer Health
D. More Exercise, Better Sleep

Habits of Highly Successful Students
Never Over-Study
When you spend too much time studying, you will quickly lose focus and the time spent in studying will become “junk time”. You think you’re studying, but you’re just sitting there re-reading the same sentence about 100 times and you’re not getting anywhere. Instead, take regular breaks. 1 Besides, it will give your mind some time to take in what you have been doing.
2
Top students don’t just randomly sit down and complete work. They actually plan what they are going to do. They actually plan the time they will study and they set goals for what will be achieved. If you want to be successful, do as successful people do. Set a plan, set a goal and stick to it, which will create a routine and a routine is the first step towards developing a habit. 3
Front Up to the Toughest Work First
Many of us like to do the easy things first to build our confidence. That’s fair enough. The only challenge with this approach is that you use up your primary energy at the start of any study period and so if you are dealing with the easy parts with your primary energy, your batteries will be low when it comes the time to deal with the hard parts. So what happens then 4 We all do it. We really shouldn’t, though. So develop the habit of giving your primary energy to the hard tasks and completing the easy stuff last.
5
Do we really have to explain this Just turn them off for an hour, we promise the world will still be there when you log back in. Don’t text your friends, don’t chat while doing memory activities, don’t make phone calls, just focus on what you’re doing. Even if you focus on work for 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes of chatting, it’s better than 30 minutes of work while also chatting! You get that right
A. Plan Your Study
B. Achieve Your Goal
C. Positive habits decide future success.
D. Taking breaks can make you get everywhere.
E. You get tired and impatient and just give up.
F. Get Off Social Networking Sites and Turn Off the Phone
G. Taking breaks will make you energetic again and refresh your mind.

结合句意可知,句子叙述的是客观事实,应用一般现在时;句子的主语“Sadness, feeling down and having a loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities”指三种不同的症状,故谓语动词要用复数形式。故填are。
故填which。
故填are affected。
start with“从……开始”,为固定用法。故填with。
这里考查it is important to do sth. 故填to seek。
故填an。

Dear Wang Qiang,
Hearing that you are addicted to playing computer games, I feel very worried. To begin with, it will waste too much of your valuable time which should be spent on your study. In addition, playing computer games for a long time will do harm to your health, especially to your eyes. Worse still, some games are full of violence, which will be harmful to your mental health.
Therefore, I strongly hope that you can get rid of it. The earlier, the better. You can read more good books, take more exercise and participate in some social activities to broaden your horizons.
I hope the advice above will be helpful to you. Looking forward to your good news.
Yours,
Li Hua
