It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.
—Henry David Thoreau
Slow Art Day is a global event with a simple mission: help more people discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art.
Why slow
When people look slowly at a piece of art, they make discoveries. The most important discovery they make is that they can see and experience art without an expert. And that’s an exciting discovery. It unlocks passion and creativity and helps to create more art lovers.
How does it work
One day each year, people all over the world visit local museums and galleries to look at art slowly. Participants look at five works of art for 10 minutes each and then meet together over lunch to talk about their experience. That’s it. Simple by design, the goal is to focus on the art. In fact, Slow Art Day works quite well this way.
By the numbers
Over 1200 individual Slow Art Day events have taken place since its official launch in 2010. Slow Art Day events have taken place on all seven continents.
700 venues (museums, galleries, artist studios, sculpture parks, public art sites, etc.) have hosted Slow Art Day events.
Participants love Slow Art Day
Feedback on this simple event has been overwhelmingly positive. Here’s a sample:
“I loved taking the time to just ‘be’ with the works, particularly pieces I might otherwise walk by. It’s a much better way of visiting the art museum than the usual idle ramble. Discussion afterwards was fun, interesting, informative and eye-opening. I look forward to doing it again.”
Slow Art Day 2023 is Saturday, April 15, in museums and galleries worldwide. Join us and experience art differently.

A. arouse readers’ interest in art B. introduce the topic of the text

2. A typical slow art activity .
A. lasts about fifty minutes when people look at art works critically
B. encourages people to see art for themselves and discuss with experts
C. organizes people to look at art on their own and talk about their experience
D. inspires people to make discoveries about art works and create their own works
3. What can we learn about Slow Art Day from the text
A. The year of 2023 will see the fourteenth Slow Art Day.
B. It happens once a year in all museums and galleries worldwide.
C. It has become an art festival celebrated on all seven continents.
D. Slow Art Day events have been held in over 1,200 different places.

You can deal with winter in two ways: Escape it or embrace it. Watching people dive into snow — in nothing but bathing suits and boots — I’m guessing these people choose to do the latter.
The seasonal madness is part of the Quebec Winter Carnival, said to be the world’s largest winter festival. About a half-million people each year come to Quebec City to delight in frigid (寒冷的) fashion.
“We embrace winter,” said Paule Bergeron of Quebec City Tourism. “It’s time to play.” The carnival runs with dozens of events. I went there last year for a few frigid days, staying at the Hilton Quebec, in the thick of the downtown action. Families are a big part of the carnival. What attract kids are things like ice fishing at a man made pond stocked with fish, where if you catch something, you can pay to have it smoked and eat it, or donate it to a food bank.
It’s a good chance to experience the culture of this European-feeling city, and nowhere is more evident than in Bonhomme, the carnival’s goodwill ambassador, a living avatar (化身) in the form of a giant snowman with a human inside gliding (滑行) around the festivities.
There are two night parades at the carnival. I attended the second one last year, the night before the carnival’s close. The streets were lined with thousands of people in a gentle snow and bitter cold, watching local dancers and school groups glide by. In the end, Bonhomme’s float came into view, and kids in the crowd went crazy. As the parade ended, thousands followed behind it, becoming part of the Quebec Winter Carnival’s magic and madness. And with a cup of milk in my hand, I realized that for once, not only did I not mind winter, I embraced it.
4. Which of the following is TRUE about the Quebec Winter Carnival

A. kids love to see Bonhomme

India is known for many colorful and fun festivals. But none is as popular as the festival of lights, Diwali, which is also called Deepavali.
The celebration begins on October 21st, with Dhanteras. For those who love shopping, this is the best day of the celebration. That’s because in addition to honouring Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, the day is also considered lucky to buy everything — from gold and silver ornaments (装饰品) to new clothes.
The following day is Kali Chaudas, or Narak Chaturdashi. For some Indians it is celebrated with good food and fireworks. For others, it is the time to drive out bad spirits from homes. No matter how it is celebrated, everyone’s mind is already focused on the big day that comes after — Diwali!
Diwali begins with a visit to temples where prayers (祷告) will be given. Then families and friends get together and celebrate by exchanging gifts and sweets. Those who missed the opportunity to buy gold on Dhanteras can make up for it on this equally lucky day. In the evening, households light up their homes with oil lamps and prepare delicious Indian food. Then starts the real fun — fireworks! What makes the displays exciting is that everyone gets to create his or her own show by lighting up their favorite fireworks.
For Indians, Diwali also marks the end of the year. They will celebrate the first day of the New Year the following day.
The final day of the festival honours the relationships between brothers and sisters and is celebrated with more special food and prayers.
For kids, Diwali is like Christmas, except earlier. They get a week’s vacation from school! It is no wonder that most kids consider Diwali the best festival of all.

A. eat great food B. play with fireworks
C. honour Lakshmi D. drive out bad spirits
9. The underlined part “make up for it” in paragraph 4 probably refers to “ ”.

I went to my first music festival with my friend this summer. Unlike the majority of festival-goers we did not buy tickets. Instead, we volunteered as festival servers for Oxfam. We each worked in exchange for a free ticket to the festival.
Leeds Festival is a large music festival which takes place at Branham Park. It takes place towards the end of August, and thousands of people attend each year. There are several different stages, each suitable for a different music taste. As well as the great music on offer, there are also funfair rides, food outlets and a silent disco. Among these things, I love silent discos: everyone has a set of headphones with two channels and music is played through the headphones. As a result, people can be dancing and singing along to completely different songs!
When we were not working, we were free to enjoy the festival. We saw a wide variety of artists across the weekend. My favorite day was the Sunday — in my opinion this had, by far, the best lineup (阵容). I really enjoyed seeing Imagine Dragons, Vampire Weekend and, of course, Arctic Monkeys, which are popular bands attracting thousands of people.
Although it was August, I could not believe how cold it was at night! We camped for five nights — a bit longer than the general public — and it was freezing every night! However, we had a really fantastic campsite. People who work at festivals stay in a different campsite to the general public. Our campsite was smaller, quieter and a lot cleaner! I had a great time and will definitely return next year!
12. How did the author attend the music festival
A. By buying a ticket. B. By accompanying her sister.
C. By acting as a waiter. D. By slipping there secretly.
13. Why did the author love the Sunday most
A. Because she was free. B. Because she got more tips.
C. Because there were many bands. D. Because there were fewer customers.
14. What does the author think of her campsite
A. Remote. B. Wonderful.
C. Dirty. D. Cold.
15. What can be the best title for the passage
A. Volunteers at a Music Festival
B. My First Music Festival

D. Music Festivals Are Popular

Dear Tom,
I’m delighted to share something about the Spring Festival in reply to your last e-mail.
The Spring Festival was really full of fun. First on the Lunar New Year Eve, we all gathered around having a big dinner. Then followed the Spring Festival Gala. As was reported, the Spring Festival Gala was really a hit. Many a star turned up on the stage, bringing us so much pleasure that we were all drowned in admiring their performances. The midnight saw us setting off the fireworks to celebrate the beginning of a new year. Then we ate dumplings. At dawn, we all dressed up and visit relatives and friends. We do hope we will have good luck in the following new year and we also do look forward to realizing all our dreams.
Now you’ve probably got a general picture of the Spring Festival. How about coming to China to experience it by yourself
