1816: “the Year Without a Summer"
The story of the "Year Without a Summer" began in 1812, when Mt Soufriere on St Vincent Island in the Caribbean erupted. Thunderous explosions filled the ait, the ground shook and a massive column of smoke rose from the volcano.
Two years later, in the Philippines, Mayon Volcano erupted. The earth trembled, and the sand and ash were shot high into the air. Then the sky darkened, and a fiery stream of lava poured down. The people living near the volcano screamed and tried to run away. This is the most deadly recorded eruption of Mt Mayon, in which over 1,200 people died. But the worst was yet to come.
Read & Writing
The year 1815 saw the eruption of Mt Tambora-the largest and most destructive volcanic event ever recorded. The disastrous event killed over 10,000 people and 61 destroyed at least 35,000 homes.
Together, these volcanoes threw huge amounts of dust into the atmosphere, and the sun was blocked out. It was cold, dark and stormy. It rained a lot. Temperatures dropped. In fact, the average global temperature dropped by as much as 3°C, and the year 1816 became known as the "Year Without a Summer" in that year, crops would not grow in many places, and some 80,000 people died of hunger.
