六、阅读理解
Good manners are the first mark of good breeding (教养) and reflect directly a person's upbringing.I have been given a very simple standard for judging manners﹣good manners are based on consideration for other people.Tact, diplomacy and hospitality﹣all these are based on good manners.
For instance,take table manners.
You are not supposed to put your elbows on the table while eating because it doesn't allow enough space for the person who is sitting next to you.
Similarly,it is important for you to respond to someone who wishes you‘good morning'or says‘namaste',even if it is a stranger. If you do not return the greeting, the stranger will feel insulted (被侮辱的) and will not greet others easily again. For parents and teachers, there is one simple rule﹣do not tolerate bad manners.Give rewards and affection in return for good manners. But do not expect too much too soon.Children will learn by and by,but it is no point expecting a three﹣year﹣old to know about butter knives and a finger bowl.
There are some simple guidelines to follow actually, though there are cultural differences to take into consideration. What is rude in Japan may be perfectly acceptable in Latin America. However, you will be forgiven for not knowing the rules of an alien culture. You will not be excused for being careless in your own country. In any case, always remember the principle of not making others uncomfortable.
1.According to the passage,good manners .
A.show where a person is brought up B.indicate a person's good upbringing
C.mean consideration for oneself D.have nothing to do with hospitality
2.We learn from the passage that .
A.putting your elbows on the table while eating is polite to others
B.you shouldn't talk with the person sitting next to you while eating
C.you should respond to others by saying"good morning"and so on
D.you needn't greet the strangers with"good morning"
3.It is implied in the passage that .
A.everyone shouldn't have enough space while eating
B.even if a stranger will feel embarrassed without your returned greetings
C.parents and teachers can't tolerate bad manners of the youth
D.children can't learn to greet others without parents' help
4.The author advises us .
A.to give much in return but not to expect too much
B.to pay attention to cultural differences only
C.to excuse for our carelessness in our own country
D.to remember the simple principle of not making others uncomfortable.
七、任务型阅读
Some people succeed, while others may not. This is because some people have certain qualities, which others do not.
The first thing you must remember is that in order to succeed, you must be optimistic(乐观). If you do not expect to win, you will not try as hard as people who do expect to win. You also need to have a clear aim and a reason for doing something because motivation(动机)is a key to getting success. If you do not have an aim, then you won’t work hard and put your performance under the microscope(显微镜)to make sure that every detail is right.
Another quality that helps people succeed is creativity---thinking about things in a different way and wondering how others would do the same thing. Think about some successful people you know. They might be successful with a little creativity, but the most successful people are the most creative ones.
Reading is another to success, as it will help you learn about how other people have got success. If you want to learn how to set up a successful business, you should read books about people like Bill Gates and Jerry Yang, who have got amazing success in their areas of business.
Practicing is equally important if you want to be successful because practice makes perfect. Practise every day at whatever career you are in, and by doing so, you will see yourself, your business and your self-confidence begin to grow. If you feel confident about what you do, this confidence will make other people believe in you as well. Your workmates will be happy to work with you, and your boss will give you more responsibility(责任). Finally if you are a successful person, you will be able to look people in the eye and smile confidently.
Success is yours for the taking! Cheers!
