Many large cities in the United States have an area called Chinatown. Each of them was set up by people who came from China. For example, Chinatown in San Francisco, California, began in the 1840s. The Chinese immigrants came to America to look for gold. Then the area they lived in later became known as Chinatown.
Chinatowns were also set up in cities in the western states of Oregon and Washington during the middle of the 19th century. Many Chinese immigrants in these areas helped build the first railroad system across the United States. However, after the work ended in 1869, many Chinese moved to the eastern and middle parts of the United States.
Chinatowns can also be found in cities outside the United States. For example, the first Chinese immigrants in London arrived in the late 18th century. They were men who worked for the East India Company. Later, the Chinese immigrants opened small stores and restaurants there.

Thirty years ago, I began my first year of teaching in Grade Two. One of my students was a little boy who had a serious ADHD (多动症). I had no training in dealing with such a child, so I spent the year learning how to help him.
At the end of the school year came near, I heard that the teachers in Grade Three were worried that they would have Stephen the next year. I thought for a long time and found that I would be the best person to follow Stephen into Grade Three. My headmaster looked at me in surprise, but he agreed to my plan.
I will never forget that day when Stephen came to ask why he was in my class again. “Well, Stephen, you’re in my class again because I asked for you.” The little boy looked surprised. “You did Why ” he asked. “Because I like you and want to keep working with you,” I answered.
Stephen just looked at me. After a few minutes, he smiled and walked to his seat. We never talked about it again, but we two together made great progress (进步) and surprised all the others that year.
