Analysis of teaching material What:This is a grammar lesson. The teaching material presents the pronunciation of letter A-H;the writing form and writing strokes of letter A-H;the use of abbreviation. Students are supposed to learn the pronunciation, writing rules of letter A-H and have a command of pronouncing rules of the vowel letters:a,e; Why: The teaching of letters will lay an important foundation for students to further study English from words,sentences to passages. Also, having a command of pronouncing rules of the vowel letters can help students classify the pronunciation of different vocabularies and thus help students to remember words more easily. The learning of abbreviation show the application of letters in daily life. How: By listening to the tape, students can get the pronunciation of letter A to H. By looking at form of the letters, students can get to know how to write these letters. Thus, pronunciation and form are combined together. The abbreviation of letters will show the use of letters.
Teaching objectives By the end of the session, most students will be able to memorize the pronunciation letter Aa-Hh.(learning and understanding) Learn to write letter A-H accurately.(learning and understanding) Recognize, analyze and conclude the pronouncing rules of the vowel letters a,e and consonants:b,d,f,g,h in English words(applying and practicing) Understand the meaning of HB,CD,BBC and have an idea of the abbreviation of some vocabulary.(transferring and creating) This will be achieved by: Asking students to follow the alphabetic exercise to have a image of the form of letters. Listening to the tape and help students to remember the pronunciation of letters. Giving several examples and let students conclude the pronunciation rules of the vowel letters:a,e. Showing students the strokes and rules when writing letters both upper class letters and lower ones. Asking students create a chant about letter A-H.
Teaching focus Listening: Memorize the pronunciation of letter A to H. Copying: Memorize the writing of letter A to H. Analyzing: Conclude the pronunciation rules of the vowel letters:a,e.
Anticipated difficulties Students may feel it difficult to Memorize the writing strokes of letters. Analyze the pronunciation rules of vowel letters:a,e and consonants:b,d,f,g,h; and find the examples they have seen in their daily life.
Teaching procedure Objective 1: Memorize the pronunciation of letter Aa-Hh Activity1: Ask students to do an alphabetic exercise(following the video) including A-H. And lead in the introduction of 26 groups of letters in English, including upper class letters and lower class letters. Activity2: Showing a chant about class rules: Answer my questions actively Be helpful to everybody Careful listening is needed Do not talk freely Eye contact with me Feel relax when answering Give big hands to others Have a good time together Justification:Activity1&2 Lead in the topic by taking an alphabetic exercise,and presenting a chant to let students figure out what we are going to learn--the eight letters; warm students up, arouse their interest and get them ready for today’s class. Activity3: Present letters from Aa to Hh one by one. Ask different students to read them and let other students judge if his or her pronunciation is correct. Ask student to repeat the pronunciation following teacher’s or the student who give the right answer’s demonstration. Justification:Activity3 Activate students’ prior knowledge;use peer evaluation to form a relaxing atmosphere for correction and get them focus on the pronunciation so that they can command the knowledge better,cultivate the habit of correcting mistakes on time. Activity5: Listen and repeat Activity6: Listen and number the letters you hear Justification:Activity5&6 Use timely practice to see if students have mastered well the knowledge they just learned.Grasp the internalization situation of the student. Obejective2: Learn to write letter Aa-Hh correctly. Activty1: Discussion Have a discussion with partners about the writing rules of letter Aa-Hh. Ask student to pay special attention to the four-line lattice and the difference of upper class letter and lower class letter. Ask students to share their findings. Activity 2 Draw four lines on the blackboard and show students the form and the rules of strokes when writing these letters. Ask students to put out their fingers to imitate teacher’s gestures in writing letters. Justification:Activity1&2 When learning a letter,students should not only know its pronunciation but also how to write them. The writing of letters forms the base of learning any other vocabularies. Through discussions, students can communicate with their partners and cultivate their ability to communicate;Explore the language point by themselves which can cultivate students’ independent learning and inquiry learning to find the characteristics of the writing rules of letters by themselves. Through teacher’s demonstration, students can confirm their findings. Activity3: Look and copy(exercise on the book) Justification:Imitation is a fundamental way in learning how to write properly; Activity4: Write the missing big letter or small letter for each pair.(exercise on the book) Justification:Activity4 serves to check students’ the degree of mastery. Objective3: Recognize, analyze and conclude the pronouncing rules of the vowels:a,e and consonant: b,c,d,f,g,h in English words. Activity1: Match the consonants with the letters. Activity2: Present some examples such as bag,bed.cat,cave,dog,frog,go,hole Activity3: Give examples of words that have the pronunciation of the vowel:a,e, such as:apple, ant, elephant, eager, ear... Activity4: Have a discussion with partner and conclude the pronouncing rules of the vowel letters a,e Activity5: Ask student to give examples respectively and evaluate. Activity 6 Make a chant(animals, people’s name,flowers...) Teacher’s demonstration: Aa,Aa,apple Bb,Bb, bee Cc,Cc,Cat Dd,Dd,dog Ee,Ee, elephant Ff,Ff,f Gg.Gg, goose Hh,Hh, horse Justification: Students do not learn isolated letters but in concrete words.Students are asked to find examples they have seen which is likely to trigger their prior knowledge and relate it to the learning of letters. As for the production of chant, students can make their own chant. This can cultivate their ability to transfer and create. Objective 4: Understand the meaning of HB,CD,BBC and have an idea of the abbreviation in English. Activity 1: Talk about what these letters mean: HB,CD,BBC. Present students pictures to show the application of letter in abbreviation. Activity2: Ask students to find out and talk about more abbreviation in their daily life,such as CBC, CCTV etc. Justification: This objective serves for application and practice.Guide the students to connect the learned letters to life, and find out the use of letters in abbreviations. Introductions Evaluation: Obejective1-Activity1: Observe if students’ are following the movements of the alphabetic exercise. Objective1-Activity2: Observe students’ reaction to see if they have found the first letter at the beginning of each sentence. Objective1-Activity3 Observe the students' answers and understand their mastery of letters in previous studies: Objective1-Activity5&6 Students ' internalization of new knowledge is judged according to the accuracy of students' imitation and exercises. Objective2-Activity1 The effectiveness of the discussion was detected based on students' participation of the discussion and the findings which students present to teachers. Objective2-Activity2 Observe students’ performance. Objective2- Activity3&4 Students ' internalization of knowledge is judged according to the accuracy of students' exercises. Objective3: To check students’ answer to see if they can make any predictions according to their prior knowledge. Evaluate the result of their conclusion and examples to see if they master the pronunciation of vowels and consonants well. According to the chant students produce, teacher can see students’ ability of creating and transferring.. Teacher will give the necessary guidance and feedback as needed. Focus on examples that students offer about abbreviation in their daily life and examine their understanding and concern about abbreviation applications.
Homework Must-do: Write letter Aa-Hh accurately in the four-wire lattice for at least 5 times. Read letter Aa-Hh accurately to your partner and correct your pronunciation if there’s any mistake. Find at least five words that pronounce A,E respectively and write them on your notebook. Optional: Find more abbreviations that you can see in your daily life.

Reflection In this grammar lesson, teacher designed various activities to help students learn the pronunciation, writing rules, phonetic symbols of eight letters. In this class, the teacher focus on the cultivation of students’ ability of communication,conclusion and analyzing. Letters are fundamental in English learning. It is the foundation of further learning First of all, the teacher uses alphabetic exercise and a chant of classroom rules to lead in the lesson. The content of the chant is closely related to students’ study life. It is a meaningful material provided by the teacher.Then, under the guidance of teaching objectives, the teacher designed different activities to serve the accomplishment of these objectives. For example, when presenting the pronunciation of letters,based on the learning situation analysis--students have been exposed to letters in prior study, teacher asks students to read first, and use peer evaluation to correct a student if there is any mistake. Then, teacher’s demonstration is given to students thus the pronunciation of letters are presented step by step. Timely practice is offered so that teacher can check students’ mastery promptly and make relevant change according to students’ situation. When teaching the writing rules, teacher ask students to observe and have a discussion first leading student to find the rules by themselves. It is a cultivation of learning capacity. When teaching the phonetic symbols of letters, teacher present some words and let students conclude the rules with the help of these words. Letters are taught in words without being isolated. After that, teacher asks student to think about other words that pronounce in the same way which is likely to trigger their prior knowledge and help them have a better and deeper command of phonetic symbols. In this lesson, teacher constantly guide students to think and find the rule by themselves, make comparisons and come out a summary by themselves. Teacher constantly lead students to combine their prior knowledge to the new knowledge they learned in the class and thus form a graphic connection between the pronunciation, writing rules and phonetic symbols of the letters.As for the cultivation of transferring and creating, students are asked to create a chant in the theme they set. In this way, students can trigger relevant knowledge in a theme and Internalize the core language point.
