Analysis of teaching material What: The topic of this module is“family”.The main content of Section A is family members and how to introduce family members. The main text is a dialogue between Cindy and Li Lan, in the form of questions “Who's he/she ” and answers “ He/She is...” to ask and answer the identity of family members. Why: The purpose of this module is not only to enable students to master the language knowledge, but also to learn to identify and introduce people and express their own opinions through listening and speaking activities around family members. Through teaching we can guide students to have a deeper understanding of the meaning of family and lead students to love their family and spend more time with family members. How: In order to present the material, the topic of the dialogue in this lesson is to talk about family members. For structure, the texts use “Who's he/she ” “ He/She is...” to ask and answer the identity of family members. This lesson aims to enable students to mater the singular and plural forms of common nouns, and to be able to use the knowledge they have learned to introduce their family and friends.

Teaching procedure Step 1 Lead-in 1. Show a sentence “Father and mother I love you” and ask students to pay attention to the initial letter of each word. Then lead students to find the topic “family”. 2. Share Sakura’s family photo with students and lead in new words: father, mother, parents, grandfather, grandmother, grandparents, etc. 3. Play a game called “Quick!Quick!” to help students have master the new words. Learning and understanding Step 1 Arouse students’ interests and get them involved in the topic. Share Sakura’s family photo can help students learn some new words and the game can help students to master them. This step can help students learn and understand the following listening material.
Step 2 Listen and practice 1. Listen and circle the words. 2. Play the tape a second time. Ask students to match the names with the people in the picture. 3. Listen again and read after it. Ask students to pay attention to Cindy’s introductions of his family and the pronunciation of abbreviations. 4. Ask students work in pairs to use “Who's he/she ” “ He/She is...” “Who're they ” “ They’re...”to ask and answer the questions about the photo in 2b. Applying and practicing Step 2 Help students learn the target language and improve their pronunciation by imitating. Pair work can help students to apply the new words and sentences “Who's he/she ” “ He/She is...” “Who're they ” “ They’re...” into practice.
Step 3 Group work Ask students to work in groups of four to share their family photos and introduce family members like: There are ____ people in my family. This is ... They are ... Step 4 Summary 1.Lead students to review what we have learned in this class. 2.Discuss the meaning of family. And then use the sentence we’ve learned at the beginning of the class “Father and mother I love you.” to tell students: Love your parents. Love your family. And spend more time with them. Homework Must-do: Take turns to ask and answer questions about your own family photos with your classmates. Optional: Draw a family tree to show the relationship between family members and introduce it with your classmates.

Reflection This class can build up the students' listening and speaking skills by using various activities, like game, pair work, group work. In the Practice part, pair work and group work can help students to master how to introduce people in daily communication and can help students improve their cooperative awareness. What’s more, the sentence “Father and mother I love you” which is shown at the end of the class is related to the sentence at the beginning of the class, it can can help students have a deeper understanding of family. The design of teaching activities can be more student-centered. Cooperative learning is an important form of learning in the classroom teaching. Group work is a valuable addition to the variety of activities which encourage and promote second language development. So it’s better to use pair work or group work to explore the meaning and usage while tackling unknown words and new sentences. In addition, this class obeys the traditional teaching procedure, lack flexible teaching methods and creative use of the language.
