Analysis of teaching material What: This lesson focuses on the grammar used by junior high school students in everyday communication and is centered on “asking for and confirming the ownership of an object”. The lesson provides grammatical points and mechanical exercises and sets up a situation in which students can practice meaningfully by putting some items in the teacher's box, taking out an item, and finding the owner of the item. Why: The teacher teaches students the general question and its answer through tables, exercises and situations, and students can use this grammar in their daily lives to confirm the ownership of items. How: The lesson involves grammar used by students in daily communication, such as “Is this”, “Is that”, “Are these”, “Are those”, “Yes, it is”, “Yes, they are”, “No, it isn’t”, “No, they aren’t”; the editor has added mechanical exercises and set meaningful exercises in the arrangement, and the plot is simple and easy to understand, with realistic and educational significance.
Teaching objectives By the end of the session, most students will be able to understand the usage of general questions and how to answer those questions. This will be achieved by: 1. teaching students vocabulary and grammar structure by listening, speaking and practice. (Learning and understanding) 2. letting students role play the dialogue and make their own dialogues to ask and answer the ownership of an object using the structure of general questions. (Applying and practicing) 3. conducting peer evaluation and meaning practice in a concrete situation. (Transferring and creating)
Teaching focus Vocabulary: pencil, book, eraser, pencil box, dictionary, schoolbag 2. Grammar: -Is this/that … -Yes, it is. /No, it isn’t. -Are these/those … -Yes, they are. /No, they aren’t.
Anticipated difficulties Students may feel it difficult to distinguish “this” and “that”, “these” and “those”.
Teaching procedure 1. Lead-in: (1) Talk about the things students should take for school, and lead in the new words: pencil, book, eraser, pencil box, dictionary, schoolbag. (2) Guess the ownership of the pencil with the sentence structure “Is this your pencil ” “No, it isn’t. Mine is …” (3) Listen and talk about the main idea of the conversation. (4) Listen and choose. (find out the owner of pencils, bule pen, green pen, eraser) 2. Presentation and Practice: (1) Look at the chart and underline the be-verbs and demonstrative pronouns with red pens. T: Now let’s look at this chart in your textbook. Could you please underline the be-verbs and demonstrative pronouns with red pens Thank you for your cooperation. And can you find the difference between part 1 and part 2 Oh you please, great, part 1 is the singular form, and part 2 is the plural form. And how about the left and right part of the chart Oh very good, the left part is the questions, and the right part is the answers. T: So, when you are asked, is this …/is that …, you can answer like what Mike you please Oh, you can answer like Yes, it is, or No, it isn’t. How about the answers to the plural form questions Yes, you should change it into they, and change is into are. T: To help you remember the usage, I made a chant! Would you like to sing it with me Thank you, you are so kind! (Sing the chant) Is this chant helpful Maybe next time, you can make your own chants! (2) Complete the questions and answers about each picture. T: Now, let’s complete the questions and answers about each picture. Before you get the answers, I’d like you to circle the be-verbs. Now you can work on the answers. Ok, Lily, please share your answers with us. How do you know this one is this, and this one is that Oh, these two things are near to each other, and these two things are far away from each other. You are good at observation! (3) Look at the chart again and find out what the questions ask for. (4) Read the questions and complete the answers T: Now, I have another question for you. Let’s look at this chart again, can you tell me, what are the questions asked for Oh Linda seems confident, Linda you please Yes, it asks the owner of the things. And how can you reply to those questions Yes, you should use possessive pronouns. Do you know what these circled words mean Sarah you please. Yes, mine means my pencil, hers means her pencil, and his means his pen. That’s very nice. Now, we can read the questions and complete the answers. Before you get the answers, you can circle the be-verbs and demonstrative pronouns, also, you can circle the possessive pronouns. After circling, it would be easier for you to complete the answers. Now, who’d like to share his or her answers with us Oh Selina you please, Yes you’ve made all the answers correct! Excellent, let’s give her big hands! 3. Production: 1. Guess the owner of things (put something into the teacher’s box, then take one thing out of the box and find the owner using the structure learned today) 2. Host a meeting to find the owners of the things in the lost and found office. Students should draw a poster about it and write dialogues to host the whole meeting. Introductions Introduce students’ former knowledge to today’s lesson. Carefully explain the grammar usage of the general question and its answers.
