Friendships can have a major effect on your health and happiness, but it’s not always easy to develop or keep friendships. You should understand the importance of social connection in your life and what you can do to develop lasting friendships.
What are the advantages of friendships
Friends can help you celebrate good times and provide support during bad times. 1 Friends give you a chance to offer needed companionship(陪伴), too. Friends increase your happiness and reduce your stress. Friends encourage you to go through the hard times and improve your self-confidence.
2 Friends play an important role in guiding you to develop good habits and keep healthy. Adults have a risk of many health problems, including depression(抑郁)and high blood pressure. In fact, studies have found that older adults who have meaningful relationships and social supports are likely to live longer than their peers with fewer connections.
Why is it sometimes hard to make friends or keep friendships
Many adults find it hard to develop new friendships or keep up existing friendships. Friendships may take a back seat to other more important ones, such as working or caring for children or aging parents. 3 Or maybe you’ve moved to a new community and haven’t yet found a way to meet people.
Developing and keeping good friendships take efforts. 4 To meet new people who might become your friends, you have to go to places where others are gathered. Don’t limit yourself to one strategy for meeting people. 5
A.Never giving up also matters.
B.Good friends are good for your health.
C.Friends prevent you from sadness as well as loneliness.
D.The broader your efforts, the greater your possibilities of success.

G.However, friendship can provide enjoyment and comfort which makes the effort worthwhile.
Have you ever tried asking for respect from another adult 6 Furthermore, demanding respect from coworkers, family members or business associates is almost out of the question.
That’s because the concept of respect must be spoon-fed at an early age. Adults who don’t understand the importance of respect are not likely to change. In the developmental years, they all need to comprehend kindness, behaving politely and using good manners. 7 They can easily open career doors, maintain good relationships and manage groups of people.
That’s why it pays to teach respectful behavior to children and young adults in your life. These include nieces and nephews, students or younger employees.
Giving and getting respect is the best way to keep society in harmony. How We don’t waste time in arguing and rocking each other’s boat. 8
● 9 Show them how to eat in a healthy way, get enough rest, take care of their clothes and help with housework. Show them they are valuable.
●Point out the good qualities of other people. Help your children focus on positive aspects of people from other cultures, neighborhoods and socioeconomic backgrounds.
●Teach them that everyone does not think alike. 10 Tell your children, “Learn more about what your friends are thinking. Ask questions. Try to see the viewpoints of others.”
●Allow your child to have a pet if possible. Caring for an animal is also an effective means of helping your child understand the feelings and needs of another creature.
A.It’s difficult to accomplish.
B.Teach them to respect themselves.
C.Teach them to live a healthy lifestyle.
D.Explain every person views situations differently.

Ways to Develop Self-discipline
Five years ago, I was the heaviest I’ve weighed in my life. When I would run, I’d immediately get tired. The worst part is that I had no motivation to get healthier—until I threw my back out. 11 When I went to physical therapy (治疗), the young woman helping me pointed to my stomach and said, “we need to awaken these muscles.” From that point on, I knew I had to change. I had to think about how to develop self-discipline with eating and working out.
12 But I eventually lost 30 pounds and have maintained a consistent workout schedule for the past five years. Of course, self-discipline is bigger than just physical health. Having discipline helps us grow, makes us reliable, and strengthens our moral framework. Here’s how to develop self-discipline.
Set clear end goals. 13 If we don’t set clear goals, we’ll float around like feathers in the breeze. If you want to be disciplined, set clear and measurable goals. Then display those goals where you’ll see them every day.
Do the small things. We all want big change quickly. It doesn’t happen that way, though. Self-discipline starts by performing small activities consistently. The small things add up to big results. 14 Every small act of faithfulness makes your self-discipline stronger.
Keep record of your progress. It’s pointless to have goals if you aren’t measuring whether or not you are moving toward them. When I don’t track my progress, I stop doing things I need to do and become lazy. It’s easy to lack discipline when you lose focus on where you’re going. 15
A.It did take a lot of work.
B.I decided to take regular exercise.
C.Keeping track helps you stay on point.
D.We have to keep in mind where we want to go.
E.Occasionally, you may get results without effort.
F.I had shooting pains down my legs whenever I got up.
G.It may take time to see those returns, but stick with it.

A Great Way to Teach Children to Take Responsibility
As parents, one of the most important things to teach children to take responsibility is to include chores as a part of their daily routine. In order to make a family function smoothly, every member must contribute. Teaching your children to take responsibility at an early age makes it easier for them to shoulder greater responsibilities as they grow older.
16 If your children leave their crayons lying on the table after drawing, picking up those crayons is not a chore. It is cleaning up a mess they have created. 17
18 . For example, if it is to feed the dog every day, make sure the children understand that if they fail in their responsibility, the dog will go hungry.
Make rewards and punishments a part of the lesson. Together decide whether they will be rewarded or not. 19 Some parents make their reward a monetary payment, while others choose to reward with certain privileges, such as extra television viewing time.
Children need to be taught that there are punishments for their actions in case of not doing their assigned chores. Decide and agree from the start what the punishment will be.
Teaching your children the importance of contributing to the family is of great importance. 20 By taking this step, you have done a wonderful thing for your children by providing them with life skills they can take with them into society.
A.A chore is a specific task a child has been assigned which helps improve the life of the entire family.
B.And what punishment they will receive if a chore isn’t done.
C.Actually you are taking a critical step in empowering them for their future.
D.Start by teaching children the difference between a chore and cleaning up after themselves.
E.Teach children the importance of each assignment, and why it matters.
F.Children will not be rewarded at all for merely cleaning up.
G.And if so, what the reward will be for a job well done.
If you are feeling that life just cannot be any worse for you, it can be challenging to think positive thoughts. When we are stressed, depressed, upset, or otherwise in a negative state of mind because we perceive (认为) that “bad things” keep happening to us, it is important to shift (转换) those negative thoughts to something positive. 21
It is often very hard to think positive when so many things are negative. 22 We can choose to think differently by beginning with the smallest of steps.
If you start with one small, positive thing and repeat it during the course of your day, you will begin to move into a more positive situation: positive thoughts, feelings, opportunities and people will start showing up in your life. 23
You can begin and end each day with a “Thank you for this wonderful day!” When you see the gas prices hiking, say “I am so glad that I have a vehicle in which to get around.” When you are late for work, say “ 24 ” If you are having health problems, be grateful for what does work :“I really do appreciate my eyes that see, my ears that hear, my mouth that tastes, and…”
25 In moments when you’re feeling really down, read what you wrote previously. This will help uplift your spirits. If you practice this regularly, you will find that your list will get longer and longer.
A.Therefore, we don’t need to turn to others.
B.If we don’t, more “bad things” will come up.
C.Write down what you’re grateful for each day.
D.But I am sure someone, somewhere is worse off than you.
E.The possibilities here are endless: feel good about what does work for you!
F.I am so happy and grateful for my job as I know that many don’t have one.
G.With practice, you will find you will change your outlook (看法) and choose to be happy.
Anyone who knows me well would see me as an optimist This was the case for me on a particularly cold January day.
I felt tired by the painful challenges I was dealing with in my personal life. 27 — The gray sky blocked even a single ray of sunlight.
About midway through the day, I left work to get some lunch. Still feeling negative (消极的), I noticed that the sun had come out for a moment. I began to think about my negative attitude and reminded myself that I was responsible for choosing my state of mind. 28 . Even though I reminded myself of this truth, I couldn’t make the change.
As I stopped at a red light, I looked at the car in front. The license (执照) plate caught my eye—It read “SUNOUT”. This brought an immediate smile to my face. 29 . And in the midst of the longest, darkest, coldest winter, this was a blessing. Then my eyes moved to the next car. The license plate on that car read FOOL. This brought more than a smile to my face as I laughed out loud! Seeing the two opposite license plates encouraged me to choose my right attitude. 30 .
I learned that day that when we’re feeling too discouraged to bring ourselves out of an active state, relief is only a prayer away!
A.Pessimists (悲观主义者) think in the opposite way, however
B.However, even optimists can sometimes lose hope
C.It felt like a reminder that the sun was shining after all
D.Do you think that the sunshine will spread throughout your life
E.I felt my spirit lifted as I made the decision to choose a positive attitude
F.While I couldn’t ignore the pain I was going through, I could choose to think positively
G.The weather seemed to match my feelings
Rock music consists of many different styles. Even though there is a common spirit among all music groups, they make very different music. 31 At that time the Beatles entered the world of music from Liverpool.
After they were given an invitation to appear live on BBC, the Beatles quickly became famous in Britain with nationwide tours. By mid-1963, the Beatles had been extremely popular in England. 32 They held large concerts and performed at clubs. They became the hottest thing on the pop music scene in England. They began as a modestly successful musician group and ended the year as show business legends. John Lennon and Paul McCartney were named composers of the year.
33 They were not sure how the Americans would react to the new type of music. Beatlemania hit New York on February 7, 1964. Hundreds of fans jammed the airport to greet them. 34 The concert was broadcast live and attracted the largest one night audience in the history of television up to that time. The Beatles were described as a British invasion (入侵) by local and nationwide newspapers at that time. Their victory in America was still remembered as a major turning point in the history of rock and roll. Thanks to the Beatles, a lot of opportunities were opened up to new faces on the market. 35
A.Even their hairstyles became major trends at that time.
B.They decided on a concert tour to the United States in 1964.
C.However, their songs changed the lives of generations to come.
D.Rock music started to develop in the 1950s and the early 1960s.
E.Many rock bands were able to follow in the footsteps of the Beatles.
F.They appeared in the films A Hard Day’s Night (1964) and Help! (1965).

Start by teaching children the difference between a chore and cleaning up after themselves.
A chore is a specific task a child has been assigned which helps improve the life of the entire family.
Teach children the importance of each assignment, and why it matters.
And if so, what the reward will be for a job well done.
C:Actually you are taking a critical step in empowering them for their future.

22.空前“It is often very hard to think positive when so many things are negative.(有如此之多消极因素还要想些积极的东西,通常情况下这很难。)”陈述当很多事情都是消极的时候,你很难去想积极的事情,空后“We can choose to think differently by beginning with the smallest of steps.( 我们可以换种方式,一步一步细细思考那些消极的东西。)”
23.上文“If you start with one small, positive thing and repeat it during the course of your day, you will begin to move into a more positive situation: positive thoughts, feelings, opportunities and people will start showing up in your life.(从一件积极的小事情开始,并且一整天就一直重复想着,你将进入一个更加积极的状态:积极的思想、情感、机遇、人们开始装扮你的人生。)”
24.根据上文“You can begin and end each day with a “Thank you for this wonderful day!” When you see the gas prices hiking, say “I am so glad that I have a vehicle in which to get around.”(你可以在每一天开始和结束的时候,说一句“感谢这么一个愉快的一天”。当你看到燃气价格高涨的时候,说“我很高兴我至少还有着这辆车可以到处兜风。”)” 可知,本段强调对生活中不如意的事也要有好的评价或看法。因此推断空格处与上文“say ‘I am so glad that I have a vehicle in which to get around’”相呼应。
25.根据下文“In moments when you’re feeling really down, read what you wrote previously. This will help uplift your spirits. If you practice this regularly, you will find that your list will get longer and longer.(每当你失落的时候,读一读你曾经写下的心情,这会让你从新振作起来。经常这样练习,你会发现你所感激的东西越来越多。)”可知,本段讲述要感激生活中的许多事情,C项中的“grateful”与之相符,因此推断C项“记下每天让你感激的事”符合语境,故选C项。
