Paragraph 1:
Approaching the doorway,Jenny took a deep breath. When she knocked at the door, she found the door was locked and her mother was not in.Tired and sad,she sat down in front of the house. "Where could my mother be?" she wondered, "Was she still angry with me?" Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother.Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her,she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
Paragraph 2:
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. "Here you come!I've been looking for you," she said, tired and relieved.Jenny couldn't help throwing herself into her mothers arms. "Mum,I'm so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me. "She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude.Hearing this, her mother smiled patting her back gently.保密 ★ 启用前 【考试时间:2023年4月25日18:30——20:30】

During the first two weeks this year, my grandmother passed away and I lost my job in London. Everything seemed to work against me.
My life felt stuck. So I decided to run. It was my natural response. I just wanted to get away. I put on my shoes and started running — by the time I came back, I knew I was awere of something.
I’ve always exercised since I was little. I’ve practiced different sports — I tried surfing, tennis, yoga and cycling. But I never got excited about those things. So I did what most people do when they don’t want to get fat — go to the gym. In a way, going to the gym is lazy. You get in the gym, do some light exercise while you have a chat with a friend or someone you know from the gym.
This year I started to run again. It was a cold January day, and I only ran for 3 miles in a time that I am too ashamed to mention. But my time is not what’s important — during that run I finally got it and I knew it would be better if I kept running.
My life has improved at the same rate that my running stamina (耐力) has improved. But running has the most impact on my productivity, mood , creativity, and overall lifestyle. Scientific research backs all of this. Dr. John Ratey in his book Spark says: if you have an important afternoon brainstorming meeting scheduled, going for a short run during lunchtime is a smart idea.
Every time life became difficult I would give up. When I wanted to travel the world after college, I decided that I did not have money — so I told myself I should save money. Years passed, and that round-the-world trip never happened. Now, when life is difficult, my response is different — I love the struggle instead of shying away from it. I owe (把……归功于) this to running.
24. In the author’s opinion, working out at a gym can _____.
A. be a waste of money
B. be a lazy way of exercising
C. help one lose weight in a set time
D. provide an opportunity to make friends
25. How did the author feel after his first run this year
A. Cold. B. Proud. C. Regretful. D. Confident.
26. What does the underlined word “backs” mean in paragraph 5
A. Supports. B. Improves. C. Changes. D. Needs.
27. What has the author learned from running
A. Never stop trying. B. Hard work pays off.
C. Rise to the challenge. D. Learn to walk before you run.
C
A man from British has learned skills needed to perform Beijing Opera, making the audience enjoy his lively performance of the Monkey King.
Ghaffar Pourazar said he has been a big fan of Bruce Lee since he was a child and is full of interest about China. In 1993, he happened to watch Beijing Opera performed in London by professionals from Jingyu Theatre Company of Beijing. Ghaffar said he fell in love with the beautiful voices, colorful costumes, excellent shows and so on. So after one year, he arrived in China alone and became a student of Beijing Opera at a Beijing school.
At the age of 32, he had to learn with teenage students everyday, starting from the most basic training of the legs and waist. At the time, he was mostly troubled by the dialogue in Beijing Opera. To him, it was the biggest obstacle, but he never gave up.
Four years later, he began to learn to perform the Monkey King, a traditional character from the Chinese classic story Journey to the West. He said he arrived at the workroom an hour earlier than other performers and also bought books and CDs to better understand the character.
Ghaffar today is not only good at speaking Beijing dialect(方言), but has also built fame for Beijing Opera. He once got a top international prize for performing the Monkey King.
To help more people enjoy Beijing Opera, Ghaffar often teaches the traditional art form in schools in the United States, Britain and other countries. When he found that the language was difficult to understand, he started to translate Beijing Opera story lyrics. He led a group of actors to perform 66 times in a month and a half in the United States. He also led a 48-member team to perform in Malaysia. For most people, the thought of having to watch themselves work out is not an attractive one. Yet as any gym-goer knows, there are always some people who like to enjoy their reflection in the floor-length mirrors. It is perhaps these particular keep-fit lovers who are most excited about the latest trend in home exercise-smart fitness mirrors.
These are 180cm or so tall, high-tech mirrors that have a computer which is connected to the Internet, and also work as a video screen. The idea is that people contact an online trainer, who then appears in the mirror along with their reflection.
On the more advanced devices the mirror is equipped with cameras, speakers and numerous sensors connected to AI, so the trainer can watch people’s movements, and provide improvements and changes. On the simpler mirrors the video and sound are just one-way — people can see and hear the trainer, but not the other way around. Lessons are typically not live;instead, people just get into a library of online workout videos.
But is there any actual advantage in being able to watch yourself work out Colleen Logan, the US owner of both Nordic Track and ProForm, says, “Seeing themselves in the mirror allows the users to correct their form or position, so they get the best possible benefits of strength exercises and reduce mistakes that could lead to injuries” .
However, Dr Anthony Papathomas, a sports and fitness psychologist says there is value to this argument, but that he also has some concerns. He said, “How people who are not confident about their body image feel about the mirror gets me in a fret. It may be a problem for those new to exercise and looking to make a lifestyle change. Even for regular exercisers, there are many who experience body dysmorphia ( 变 形) or eating disorders, and for them, seeing a reflection throughout their exercise might be troubling.”
32. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about smart fitness mirrors
A. Their target users. B. Their basic functions.
C. Their wide popularity. D. Their complex structure.
33. What can be the benefit for exercisers from simpler fitness mirrors
A. Having live workout lessons. B. Exercising with other partners.
C. Learning from some trainers at once. D. Taking advantage of workout videos.
34. What does Logan think of the mirror
A. It makes mistakes sometimes. B. It could bring injuries to its users.
C. It helps users exercise more properly. D. It can’t be used for strength exercises.
35. Which one is the best title
A. Fitness Mirror: Good or Bad B. A Good Helper: Fitness Mirror
C. Home Exercise is Coming D. The Trend of Fitness Mirror

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel(争吵)with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help crying sadly when she thought of the angry words from her mother. After she walked aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt hungry but had no money. She stood in front of a shop which sold noodles for several minutes, but she had to leave. The seller of the noodle shop came out and noticed the young girl.
"Hey,girl,you want to have noodles?"
"Oh,yes, but I have no money on me," she replied.
"Oh,that's nothing.I'll treat you today," the owner said,"come in."
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
"What is it?" asked the man kindly.
"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears."Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me.She is so merciless compared to a stranger!"
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl,do you really think so?I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot.But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you?Have you expressed your thanks to her?"
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb(迟钝的) with shock;she remembered mother's familiar face and weathered (风化的) hands."Why did I not think of that?A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me."
