(一)
Have you ever wondered why sometimes the same word and sometimes two different words are used for animals and their meat in English For example, fish meat is fish, while cow meat is beef and pig meat is pork. The truth lies in the fact that many English words come from other languages, such as French.
In 1066, some French-speakers called Normans took over most of modern-day England. These Normans influenced the local language of Old English by adding their own French words to it. At that time, the poor English farmers called the animals they raised cows, pigs and sheep. The wealthy Normans only met these animals during meals, so they naturally used their own words for the meat they were eating. These included the words boeuf, pork and mouton, which produced the words beef, pork and mutton that we use today.
Some other words like fish and chicken did not experience this change. The French word for fish sounds almost the same as the English word poison (毒药). As for chicken, there is no clear explanation. Next time you eat at a restaurant, pay attention to the menu and you may notice some words with unique origins (独特的起源).

For centuries, Peruvian (秘鲁的) locals have been talking about a river which is so hot that it can burn people or animals.
When Andrés Ruzo was just a small boy, his grandfather told him a story: Some soldiers went to the Amazon jungle and searched for gold there. However, only few men returned. They told stories about poisonous water, man-eating snakes and a boiling river.

The river water is also used to make tea and cook by some people. In fact, the river is 700 km away from the closest volcano (火山). Doctors in the hospital usually wear white coats. Many people especially kids and teens have a question about why these medical professionals (专业人士) prefer white coats. (A) These white coats have become the standard uniform for them. Why is this
The answer is that these white coats make them look more professional. Patients in the hospital can easily identify their doctors when these doctors wear uniforms in the same color. The white coats also seem to send a message: the persons who wear them can give you good treatment. In fact, patients usually feel more comfortable and relieved (放心的) when their doctors wear white coats instead of other clothes. Indeed (的确), whenever we see someone in a white coat, we naturally think that person is a doctor.
The history goes back to at least 100 years ago. White coats were first introduced into the hospital at the beginning of the 20th century. Before that, scientists were the only people who wore them. At that time, doctors wore their own clothes, even in the operating room. Medicine wasn’t quite scientific back then, but that soon changed. With the development of anesthesia (麻醉) and other improvements, medical training started to pay more attention to science. (B) 因此, 医生们开始穿白色的外套. Swifts (雨 燕) are among the fastest animals on Earth. These small birds live mostly in the air. In fact, swifts can fly two or three years without touching the ground! To fit into the life in the sky, swifts depend on their speed and, believe it or not, the saliva (唾液) in their mouths.
Swifts can fly at a speed of over 112 km per hour. That’s because their wing is like a boomerang (回飞镖). This shape gives them extra speed. They can also flap one wing faster than the other, which allows them to make quick turns without slowing down. Making quick turns can help swifts catch flying insects to eat. Swifts often fly into clouds of insects such as mosquitoes. They rush in and open their wide mouths to catch as many insects as they can.
The saliva in swifts’ mouths is very powerful. They use it to catch insects to feed their young. Their saliva is like glue. They collect insects in their mouths and shape the insects into balls with saliva. One food ball can include nearly 1 000 insects. Swifts also use their saliva as glue to build their nests. They catch things in the air and stick them together to form their nests on the side of cliffs (悬崖) or on the roof of buildings.
Swifts’ short legs are not good for walking or standing on smooth surfaces. However, their sharp claws (爪子) allow them to stand on rocks and walls so that they can take a short rest before returning to their life in the sky.

According to the requirement of the local education department, all primary and secondary school students in Hainan Province must master swimming skills by the end of August, 2021, in order to avoid possible danger in summer.
