Most people can't live to 100. Those who do live so long can hardly walk, let
alone take part in any activities. A few people, however, take part in dangerous
activities even though they are more than 100 years old - They keep going and go
ing! There is a great grandmother who likes challenging herself although she is 1
01 years old this year.
Mary Hardison believes that people should always be cheerful and more importa
ntly, take on all kinds of adventures while they physically still can. So, instea
d of celebrating her 101st birthday with a boring party, she decided to go paragl

r with expert instructor Kevin Hintze, and jumped down fearlessly from the sky ne
ar her home in Ogden, Utah. And, it was not just a simple jump either. According
to Kevin Hintze, the grandmother encouraged him to turn around, as they made thei
r way down.
This is not the first time that Mary has done something "wild" and "crazy". F
or her 90th birthday she rode all the adult rides at Disneyland. And, she is not
done yet—For her 102nd birthday she hopes to go down the 3,000 feet Alpine Slide
at Utah's Park City Mountain Resort!
Not surprisingly, this great action has made Mary Hardison very famous and al

My home is in Demonton near a river valley. It is a beautiful area that has b
een made into a park with meters of hiking trails(小路)along the river.
One day I discovered a trail I had never seen before. It was extremely steep
(陡峭的)and very slippery as it was covered with ice. I was alone at the time an
d even though I was terrified, I still wanted to go for a walk. Just this thought
made my heart beat faster. I shook, not from the cold, although it was probably
around -15℃, but from the fear. I knew I had to do it.
I moved forward slowly and put one foot on the trail, then the other. Thus I
continued, one foot in front of the other I went very slowly down the trail, shak
ing with every step. I was sweating despite my cold. I had no idea how long it wo
uld take me to travel along the trail, but I didn't care. I just wanted to conque
r(征服)my fear.
At last, I succeeded! At least that's how I felt. I nearly ran down the trail.
Well, not exactly ran, but it felt like that compare with my extremely slow spee
d in the beginning.
Maybe you don't think this is much of a story, but I just want to tell you th
at we never know what's around the corner. If you compare this story to life, you
'll see that we have no idea where life is going to take us, or how many easy or
difficult trails there are to choose from until we make a choice! The point is: w
e have the freedom to choose!
8 Which of the following words can best describe the trail the author discovered

10 We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. it was very warm that day
B.the trail was not far from the river
B. the trail was far from the author's home
D.the author had walked along the trail before
11 By talking about his experience, the author mainly wants to tell us that ____.
A. Rome was not built in a day
B.things may not seem so dangerous in the end
C.it's worth challenging our fears and pushing on
D.we don't have the freedom to do anything we like
D

Every morning, many girls in Zimbabwe rise with the sun and follow their da
ily routine to fetch water for their families. They have to walk many miles and
carry the water home on their heads. Where they live, there is no running wat
er at all.
"You have to relax your neck and head and make it follow the load," one gir
l told me. "It's easy for you to do that if you have mastered some skills." I h
ave lived in Zimbabwe all my life. But I had never tried to balance a pot on my
head. I have made efforts many times and I have also practiced it for a long t
ime. But it was not easy at all. I managed to walk only a couple of yards befor
e the pot fell off my head. The girls watching covered their mouths and giggled
at my poor head-balancing skills.
In reality, water is not the only thing that requires head-balancing skills
in their daily life. In most of these villages, there is no electricity for co
oking, so fire wood is used instead. The girls must collect and carry the fire
wood back to their villages. They insist the easiest way to do this is on their
heads.
Even at school, head-balancing skills come in handy. At a school near the s
mall town of Norton, I saw a group of girls fetching bags of sand that were to
be used to build a new classroom. They carried these bags with ease. When I tri
ed, I couldn't bear the weight.
Girls in many countries worldwide prefer to carry things on their heads. Th
ey are taught this skill at a young age and grow up to have strong necks and gr
eat posture. For these girls, balance is simply a way of life.
12 The first paragraph mainly tells us that ________.
A. girls are suffering a lot in Zimbabwe
B. girls are the main labor force in their family
C. girls gain their ability out of their poor living condition
D.girls' main responsibility is to fetch water for their families
13 According to the girl, the head-balancing act should be ________.
A.horrible B.rapid C.gentle D.skillful
14 Why do the girls have good head-balancing skills
A. They have used them since they were young.
B. They think it is the easiest way to carry things.
C. They are required to carry things on their heads.
D.Their necks are strong and their heads are square.
15 How does the author introduce the girls' good head-balancing skills
A. By analyzing some questions. B.By making some comparisons.
C.By showing his appreciation. D.By giving his own opinions.

How to Make Friends
Let's be honest, there are times when you want to know how to make friends. You
may be reading this because you are shy or unsure of how to approach a person.
16________. But it is not very hard to make friends. Continue reading to find out
how!
1. Spend more time out
If you want to make friends, you first need to put yourself out in order to
meet people. 17________ Remember, friends seldom come knocking on your door while
you sit at home playing on your laptop.

3. Be loyal(忠诚)to a friend.
You've probably heard of fair-weather friends. 19________, but are nowhere to
be found when you really need them. Part of being a friend is being prepared to spend

unpleasant problem, or if he or she just needs a shoulder to cry on, be there.
Although making friends might not be difficult, keeping friendship is never easy.
Share your life with them. Be respectful to their decisions. Be grateful to their

you can do to pay for the necklace." Jenny agreed immediately, feeling a burst of
joy. So her mother bought the pearl necklace for her. Jenny worked on her housework

Several days later, when Jenny's father came into read her story, Jenny was waiting
anxiously for him on the bed. When listening to the story, Jenny was totally absent-minded,
with her hands holding the necklace tightly and firmly. When the story came to an end,
unexpectedly, Jenny offered her beloved necklace to her father, with her fingers trembling
automatically. No one knew what the necklace meant to her. She whispered to her father,
softly and gently, "Daddy, you know I love you more than the necklace." Then, the necklace
slid into her father's hands determinedly.
Holding the plastic pearl necklace his daughter offered, the father dragged out a blue
box. Much to Jenny's amazement, a beautiful real pearl necklace lay peacefully in the box,
which set her heart racing. Jenny froze there, a thrilled expression brightening her face.
Before Jenny was able to say something, her father brushed a warm kiss on her face and
gathered her into his arms. Holding the necklace in her hand, Jenny lifted her eyes, tears
beginning to stream down her cheeks.
