Bronte Creek Provincial Park
This park is in the Oakville-Burlington area west of Toronto. Plenty of pic

A day at the beach has turned into weeks of pain for an Indiana teenager after
she was infected (感染)with a rare disease in Florida.
12-year-old Kylei Brown and her family arrived in Destin earlier this month
on vacation. After a day spent playing on a beach. Kylei woke up with an awful
pain in her lower leg. Everyone just thought 'she played too hard and it was n
othing serious and continued on with their vacation. But the next day Kylei's p
ain was even worse. It was so bad that she couldn't even walk and she developed
a fever.
The family reached out to Kylei's doctor on the way back to Indiana. The do
ctor told Kylei's mother to take Kylei to the hospital, and that's when the fam
ily found out that the infection behind her knee was necrotizing fasciitis, a r
are deadly disease. It's fast moving and 1 in 3 people who get it die.
"They were taking her into emergency surgery(外科手术)trying to remove th
e infection from her leg. And doing that, they were trying to save her leg and
save her because the infection was moving so rapidly," Kylei's mother said. "If
it wasn't for the quick treatments, I wouldn't have her."
Necrotizing fasciitis can be caused by different kinds of bacteria(细菌).
The bacteria, often found in water, can enter the body through an open wound. K
ylei hurt her leg on a skateboard before the family left for Florida.
"We are working with the Alabama and Indiana departments of health to colle
ct information on this matter and decide if this was caused by a bacteria such
as vibrio or any other reportable health condition," says Emerson George, a spo
kesperson for the Florida Department of Health.

People can be easily harmed by what they desire. The mouse is caught by the
cheese, and man is caught by the world's most popular entertainment—televisio
n.
The amount of time people spend watching television is surprising. Accordin
g to a research, American adults usually spend four hours a day in front of the
TV, fully half of their free time. Over a lifetime, that's more than nine year
s. Yet, we love to complain(抱怨)that we don't have time for the things we re
ally want to do.
There are two reasons—we end up watching more TV than we know we should. P
eople think they need it and it's easy. We usually don't realize how long we're
watching television. Since it's a passive(消极的)activity, with feelings of
lowered concentration continuing even after the set is off, watchers find their
energy and concentration are low. Thus, they don't want to get up and do somet
hing else once you're planted on the sofa.
Instead of being a passive watcher, Julie Morgenstern, the author of Time M
anagement, advises a method. "Fill your time with things you like," she says. "
You should have a plan for your time and don't watch beyond what you've planned.
"
There are also ways to make TV watching harder. Most people put the TV in t
heir living room. But you may try to put the TV away in a back room or the base
ment. Then arrange your sofas and chairs for conversation and reading.
Benefits of less TV will be obvious. Every spring during the TV Turnoff Wee
k(April 21-27)thousands of people give this a try and often find they prefer
watching less. The first few days can be hard. But, after that period, people f
ind freedom. They get more things done and that makes them happier.
You may see TV watching as a way to decompress after your day. Studies ha
ve shown that watching television doesn't lower your stress level, but in fact
may increase it.
8 What can be inferred from the second paragraph
A.Watching TV is a good way to relax.
B.People are hurt by what they really want.
C.People spend too much time on television.
3
D.Television plays an important role in people's life.
9 What is the sixth paragraph mainly about
A.People can live without television.
B.Watching less TV gives people more jobs.
C.Watching less TV helps people live a good life.
D.People find freedom once they start to watch less TV.
10 What does the underlined word "decompress" in the last paragraph probably
mean
A.Balance. B.Complain. C.Communicate. D.Relax.
11 Which would be the best title for the passage
A.How to Stop Watching TV B.Fighting with Watching TV
C.The Importance of Watching TV D.The Most Popular Entertainment
D
Pablo Picasso is one of the most famous artists in the world. When his pain
tings are sold, they usually cost millions of dollars. Now an art museum in Can
ada has used a special kind of X-ray to help them find new secrets in one of Pi
casso's famous paintings, "La Miséreuse accroupie", or "The Crouching Beggar(蜷
坐的乞丐)".
It is not unusual for artists to paint pictures on top of other pictures. A
t one point in his life, Picasso did this often, probably as a way to save mone
y. People often call this time Picasso's "Blue Period" because he used a lot of
blue in his paintings.
People at the Art Gallery of Ontario(AGO)thought that Picasso's painting
"The Crouching Beggar" was painted on top of another picture, but they did not
know exactly what it was. Using X-rays, they learned that Picasso had painted h
is picture on top of a landscape(风景画)painting.
Picasso turned the landscape painting on its side and used some of the outl
ines of the old painting when he made his new painting. The people from the AGO
worked with scientists at Northwestern University. These scientists used X-ray
s in a special way to test the painting.
The X-ray pictures showed more details of the landscape. But they also had
another surprise. They showed that at first Picasso had painted his beggar with
her arm out, holding a piece of bread, but in the final picture, he painted ov
er her arm, so that all you can see is her coat.
Scientists and people who study art are excited about this new way to use X
-rays. It is much cheaper than the old way. The machine is also much easier to
move around. Some people think that there are many other secrets that can be fo
und by looking at other paintings in this new way.
12 What is the reason why a time in Picasso's life was called his "Blue Per
iod"
A.His painting subjects. B.His living environment.
4
C.His use of the color blue. D.His love for blue paintbrushes
13 Why did the scientists test Picasso's "The Crouching Beggar"
A.To see the old painting under it. B.To learn about his personal life.
C.To know why he drew a beggar. D.To see the beggar's looks clearly.
14 What did the test show about the first "The Crouching Beggar"
A.The beggar looked hungry. B.The beggar's coat was blue.
C.The beggar was cutting bread. D.The beggar's arm could be seen.
15 What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about the new test method
A.Its popularity. B.The right ways of using it.
C.Its advantages. D.The fields where it can be used.
