静夜思
床前明月光,疑是地上霜。
抬头望明月,低头思故乡。In the Quiet Night
So bright a gleam on the foot of my bed---
Could there have been a frost already?
Lifting myself to look, I found that it was moonlight.
Sinking back again, I thought suddenly of home.

A SPRING MORNING
I awake light-hearted this morning of spring,
Everywhere round me the singing of birds
But now I remember the night, the storm,
And I wonder how many blossoms were broken.
(by Meng Haoran)春晓
春眠不觉晓,处处闻啼鸟.
夜来风雨声,花落知多少.
The Willow
The slender tree is dressed in emerald all about,
A thousand branches droop like fringes made of jade.
But do you know by whom these slim leaves are cut out?
The wind of early spring is sharp as scissor blade.

If that looking –glass gets broke,
Papa’s going to buy you a billy-goat.
If that billy-goat runs away.
Papa’s going to buy you another today.I saw a fish-pond all on fire,
I saw a house bow to a squire,
I saw a person twelve-feet high,
I saw a cottage in the sky,
I saw a balloon made of lead,
I saw a coffin drop down dead,
I saw two sparrows run a race,
I saw two horses making lace,
I saw a girl just like a cat,
I saw a kitten wear a hat,
I saw a man who saw these too,
And said though strange they all were true.b) Poems A and B.
Poem A’s rhyming pairs: word, mockingbird; sing, ring; brass, looking-glass; broke, billy-goat; away, today
Poem B’s rhyming pairs: fire, squire; high, sky; lead, dead; race, lace; cat, hat; too, trueSuggested answers to Exercise 2:They didn’t win because they didn’t have enough time; they didn’t have thousands of fans screaming; they stayed up too late the night before; they ran out of energy.
The author doesn’t believe his excuses, because at the end of the poem the speaker admits that they just did not play well enough to win (We would have won if we’d been better!)Poem D: His/ Her brother.
Poem D: The author likes his subject. Although the speaker describes a couple of negative aspects of his/ her brother (teasing, enemy), the reader can feel the affection that the speaker feels for his/ her brother.
Poem E: Summer.
Poem E: The author doesn’t like his subject. The reader gets the feeling that the speaker cannot wait until the summer is over. The words drooping, dreading, week in, week out and endless convey this feeling.Poem H: A woman’s husband has gone away. The woman waits for him by the river where she last saw him. She waits and waits, never moving from that spot and never speaking, while the river continues to flow and the wind and rain come and go.There is not one correct answer to this. We cannot know what emotions the woman is feeling. She probably has a wide range of feelings and could have any of the listed feelings expect perhaps joy. She probably feels lonely; she probably feels love for her husband and trusts that he will return; she probably feels sorrow for her husband because her has left her.Baa, baa, black sheep,Have you any wool?Yes sir, yes sir,Three bags full; One for the master,And one for the dame,And one for the little boyWho lives down the lane.Let's appreciate moreAs I was going to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives.
