This year’s Winter Olympics were held in two areas, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou. The areas get cold in winter but get little natural snow. That meant some serious changes were needed to hold the Winter Olympics. The Winter Olympics took place on almost 100% artificial (人工的) snow and it was the first time in Olympic history.
China took water from a reservoir (水库) which helps supply Beijing’s drinking water and sent it to a nearby river. To carry the water to the mountains for making snow, the country ran miles and miles of pipes.
China hired an Italian company called TechnoAlpin to create the snow. TechnoAlpin created artificial snow at several earlier Winter Olympics. For the snow in this year’s Olympics, TechnoAlpin laid over 64 kilometers of pipe and brought in hundreds of snow-making machines. Even with all of those machines, making the snow for this year’s Games took seven weeks.
It’s useful to be able to make snow when nature doesn’t provide enough. But artificial snow isn’t the same as natural snow, which has more air and less water. An athlete used to natural snow might have to change their style on man-made snow.
Still, the machines that make artificial snow are quite advanced. They can make several different kinds of snow depending on what’s needed for each sport. For example, the snow they make for downhill skiing is different from the snow made for cross-country skiing.
In recent years, it has become more and more common to use artificial snow at winter sports events. That’s true even in places that used to have a lot of snow naturally. Some artificial snow was used in the Winter Olympics in 2010 and 2014 because of warm weather. In the 2018 Games in South Korea, nearly 90% of the snow was man-made.
As the world warms because of climate change, problems like this are expected to become far more common. Michael Mayr, who leads TechnoAlpin, says, “You couldn’t have winter sports now without man-made snow.”
24.Where was the artificial snow in this year’s Winter Olympics created
A.In a river. B.In the mountains.
C.In the pipes. D.In a reservoir.
25.What is the advantage of man-made snow
A.It has more air and less water. B.It is more environmentally-friendly.
C.It can improve athletes’ performance. D.It can be made for the need of each sport.
26.What has made it more common to use artificial snow at winter sports events
A.Advanced technology. B.A shortage of water.
C.Air pollution. D.Climate change.
27.What can be the best title for the text
A.The Future of the Winter Olympic Games
B.The History of Man-Made Snow for Winter Sports
C.The Man-Made Snow Behind China’s Winter Olympics
D.The Secret to Creating Artificial Snow for Winter Sports

For centuries, Central America’s Garifuna people have kept the culture’s spoken history alive through their ancestors’ native language. But decades of modernization, random native-language training in Garifuna schools, intermarriage between cultures, and the ridicule (嘲笑) of young people who speak the language, together led to Garifuna being listed on the UNESCO Atlas (地图集) of Endangered Languages in 2001.
The threat of language extinction isn’t new. Some linguists estimate that a language dies every two weeks, as some languages become important tools for social and economic exchange, while others are pushed to the margins (边缘). But there are ways to save at-risk languages as well. The key is that the language needs to be thought of less as preserved, “but indeed part of their present and future life,” says Liliana Sanchez, a linguist and professor at the University of Illinois.
That’s exactly what the Garinagu (Garifuna people) are doing. For the past two decades, Garifuna artists have used a cultural cornerstone—spirited dance music—to inspire young Garinagu to learn and share their native language. Now, with a new Garifuna Tourism Trail project in Belize, travelers can experience and support the cultural revival, too.
Palacio, a leader in the cultural revival, gathered Garifuna musicians across Central America to form a band named the Garifuna Collective in 2007. Their Garifuna lyrics sent a powerful message: It’s time to defend our culture. With multiple world tours and international music awards later, the Garifuna Collective put Garifuna on the international map and took Belize along with it. Although Palacio passed away in 2008, his lyrics and the work of Garifuna musicians lit a cultural flame for Garinagu worldwide.
Will music save the Garifuna language Time will tell. Garifuna remains on UNESCO’s endangered-language list, last updated in 2010. And, as the Hawaiians just learned from revitalizing (使恢复生机) their own language, this kind of revival is a long, multi-generational road.
28.What is the first paragraph mainly about
A.The origin of the Garifuna language.
B.Reasons for Garifuna’s being endangered.
C.The endangered languages of 2001.
D.Ways to save the Garifuna language.
29.What is Liliana Sanchez’s opinion on saving at-risk languages
A.They should be protected by singing songs.
B.They should be preserved as much as possible.
C.They should be made use of in everyday life.
D.They should be advertised by tourists.
30.How does the author like Palacio’s work
A.Overwhelming.
B.Challenging.
C.Interesting.
D.Rewarding.
31.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.Garifuna has been removed from the list.
B.Music is sure to save the Garifuna language.
C.It’ll take great efforts to preserve Garifuna.
D.Hawaiians are better at protecting their culture.

Inventor, physicist, surveyor, astronomer, biologist, artist...Robert Hooke was all these and more. Some say he was the most extraordinary experimental scientist of the 17th century. In the course of his work, he cooperated with famous men of science like Isaac Newton, and the great architect Christopher Wren.
Hooke’s early education began at home, under the guidance of his father. He entered the Westminster School at the age of 13, and from there went to Oxford, where he came in contact with some of the best scientists in England. Hooke impressed them with his skills at designing experiments and inventing instruments. In 1662, at the age of 28, he was named Curator of Experiments at the newly formed Royal Society of London—meaning that he was responsible for demonstrating (展示) new experiments at the society’s weekly meeting. Hooke accepted the job, even though he knew that the society had no money to pay him!
Watching living things through a microscope was one of his favourite pastimes. He invented a compound microscope for this purpose. One day while observing a cork (软木塞) under a microscope, he saw honeycomb-like structures. There were cells—the smallest unit of life. In fact, it was Hooke who invented the term “cell” as the box-like cells of the cork reminded him of the cells of a monastery (修道院).
Another achievement of Hooke’s is his book Micrographia, which introduces the enormous potential of the microscope. It contains fascinating drawings of the things he saw under the microscope. The book also includes, among other things, ideas of gravity, light and combustion (燃烧) that may have helped scientists like Newton when they were developing their own theoretical frameworks of these phenomena.
Hooke made a valuable contribution to astronomy too. A crater on the moon is named after him in honour of his service to this branch of science.
32.Why did Hooke accept the job as Curator of Experiments
A.He liked designing experiments.
B.His family needed his support.
C.His parents couldn’t afford his education.
D.He wanted to please some famous scientists.
33.What does the underlined word “pastimes” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Jobs. B.Experiments.
C.Hobbies. D.Structures.
34.What can we know about Hooke
A.He went to Oxford in 1645.
B.He was well paid at the Royal Society of London.
C.He made a contribution to medicine.
D.His book Micrographia may have helped Newton.
35.Which word can be used to describe Hooke
A.Honest. B.Creative.
C.Reliable. D.Modest.

Melanie’s parents never knew of the great dancing skills their daughter had until one day, they saw the little girl dancing with the beautiful steps of a ballerina.

“We must give her ballet lessons to help her improve her skills,” her father said.

M: Being an athlete is very fun, painful, and exciting. Every time I come to the track, I feel like I’m out of this place. This is Botswana National Stadium. This is where I train. When I saw Usain Bolt running in 2012 London Olympics, I was amazed. Just watching him run, got me motivated. I quit being a chess player and started to run. I went to the 2016 Olympics and went to the finals at the age of 18. And wow, I finished fifth. It was a dream come true to me, but I still wanted more. The training is super hard. But the hardest part for me is that I got an injury, an injury which may take me out for years. For a period of time, as a young athlete, I didn’t know what to do. I lost focus. But now, I’m back on the track. I really want to be there at the Olympics and do what I did before. Do much, much greater. I don’t care about the gold, I don’t care about the silver. I want to do my best, you know, take everything and show it to the world.

根据第一段“For centuries…, together led to Garifuna being listed on the UNESCO Atlas (地图集) of Endangered Languages in 2001. (几个世纪以来,中美洲的Garifuna人通过他们祖先的母语保留了这种文化的口语历史。但是几十年的现代化进程、Garifuna学校里随意的母语培训、不同文化间的通婚以及说这种语言的年轻人的嘲笑,这些都导致Garifuna在2001年被联合国教科文组织列入濒危语言地图册。) ”可知本段主要介绍Garifuna濒临灭绝的原因。故选B。
29.推理判断题。根据第二段“But there are ways to save at-risk languages as well. The key is that the language needs to be thought of less as preserved, “but indeed part of their present and future life,” says Liliana Sanchez, a linguist and professor at the University of Illinois. (但是也有一些方法可以拯救濒临灭绝的语言。关键在于,这种语言不应该被认为是被保存下来的,“而是他们现在和未来生活的一部分,”伊利诺伊大学(University of Illinois)语言学家、教授莉莉安娜·桑切斯(Liliana Sanchez)说。)”可知Liliana Sanchez认为拯救濒危语言应该在生活中利用语言,让语言成为生活的一部分,故选C。
30.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Although Palacio passed away in 2008, his lyrics and the work of Garifuna musicians lit a cultural flame for Garinagu worldwide. (尽管Palacio于2008年去世,但他的歌词和Garifuna音乐家的作品为Garinagu在全球范围内点燃了文化之火。)”可知作者觉得Palacio的作品是有意义的,故选D。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Will music save the Garifuna language Time will tell. Garifuna remains on UNESCO’s endangered-language list, last updated in 2010. And, as the Hawaiians just learned from revitalizing (使恢复生机) their own language, this kind of revival is a long, multi-generational road. (音乐能拯救Garifuna语吗 时间会证明一切。Garifuna语仍在联合国教科文组织濒危语言名录上,上一次更新是在2010年。而且,正如夏威夷人刚刚从复兴他们自己的语言中学到的,这种复兴是一条漫长的、多代人的道路。)”可知拯救Garifuna语还有很长的路要走,也就是保护Garifuna需要很大的努力。故选C。

Hooke accepted the job, even though he knew that the society had no money to pay him!(1662年,28岁的他被任命为新成立的伦敦皇家学会的实验策展人,这意味着他负责演示学会周会上的新实验。 故选A。
根据第四段“Another achievement of Hooke’s is his book Micrographia, which introduces the enormous potential of the microscope. It contains fascinating drawings of the things he saw under the microscope. The book also includes, among other things, ideas of gravity, light and combustion (燃烧) that may have helped scientists like Newton when they were developing their own theoretical frameworks of these phenomena.(胡克的另一项成就是他的著作《显微术》,该书介绍了显微镜的巨大潜力。

39.根据空格后的句子“The baby falls down to the ground and call for help.(幼崽会掉到地上呼救)”可知,飞狐的幼崽有时会有危险,所以B项“Sometimes a baby bat is in danger(有时蝙蝠宝宝会有危险)”填入空格处,符合题意。故选B项。
40.根据空格前的部分“If they fail to do so”和下文的句子“Often hundreds of dead baby bats can be found lying on the ground at the foot of a tree.(通常可以在树下的地上发现数百只死蝙蝠)”可知,空格处的句子应该是说飞狐幼崽死亡的事,所以G项“the baby will die(蝙蝠宝宝就会死去)”填入空格处,符合题意。故选G项。
