A few years ago, my sister-in-law started to feel concerned about her teenage daughter. What
was she doing after school?Where was she spending her time?My niece was an excellent student, and took part in all kinds of after-class activities. Even so, her mom decided to put a tracking (跟踪) app on the kid's phone.
At first, this made my sister-in-law “feel better”.Then the good situation suddenly ended. She recalled, “I found out that she was someplace that she said she wasn't. I went
out in the middle of the night and found her walking without shoes in the middle of the
street with some friends.” Things went quickly downhill for the mother and the daughter after that.
With 73% of teens having their own smartphones now, according to a 2018 Pew
study, more and more of their parents are facing the question: To spy or not
Ana Homayoun, founder of Green Ivy Educational Consulting, has advised many parents and their kids about this. “I've found teens are more receptive to tracking apps
when it is included as part of a family use agreement to improve safety than when it is
placed as a secret tool to watch them,” she said.
Mark Bell, a father of a teenage girl, said, “We don't have tracking apps, but we have
set some ground rules that my daughter must follow in exchange for providing a smartphone.” For example, his daughter must “friend” him on social media accounts so that he can review posts, and must share all passwords.
When you're trying to build credence, you need to create an environment that
encourages it. So, to win their trust, you always need to be straight with your children.
“Parents must let children know how and when they'll be watching them,” said Doctor
Pauleh Weigle. If they're not open about it, he warns, it can “greatly damage the parent
and child relationship”.
24.Why did the author's sister-in-law use the app
A.Because she was interested in new apps.
B.Because she was worried about her daughter.
C.Because she wanted to know about after-class activities. D.Because she wanted to teach her daughter about the app.
25.What can we learn about today's children from Homayoun
A.They doubt family use agreements.
B.They are worried about online safety.
C.They welcome the use of tracking apps.
D.They dislike being spied on secretly with tracking apps.
26.According to paragraph 5, Bell’s daughter .
A.kept him out of her online groups B.developed some bad online habits
C.allowed him to know her online behavior
D.wanted to put a tracking app on her phone
27.What is the possible meaning of the underlined word “credence” in the last paragraph
A.Trust. B.A credit card. C.Environment. D.Praise.

You know by now that dirt 泥土)is good for lots of things:growing plants, feeding worms, (
(
)
even the occasional mud bath. But building houses Absolutely.
People build houses with dirt because it is plentiful(充足的),really cheap, and fireproof.
Thick dirt walls keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. And you can build a whole house with few tools other than your own two hands.
In fact, dirt is so good for building things that half the people in the world live in houses made
of mud. Maybe even you!
Mud works best for building where it's dry for most of the year. If there's too much rain, the
walls of your mud house could melt like ice cream on a warm day. But in places that don't see
many storm clouds, mud bricks (砖块),which are baked hard in the sun or in a hot oven, can be as strong and durable as stone. In Africa, some mud-brick buildings have been standing for thousands of years.
In the southwestern United States, American Indians built four-story apartment buildings from mud bricks called adobe (土坯). And on the Great Plains, the first white settlers saw an
ocean of grass as tall as oxen, but few trees for building houses. So they made their houses out of sod, dirt held together by the thick, tangled roots of prairie grass.
Most sod houses became worm food years ago,but many of the buildings you see every day
are pure dirt. The bricks that may make up the walls of your house or school are made of clay that's been baked in a fiery kiln (炉).So the next time someone says a building is made of bricks,
correct them. You know it's really made of plain old dirt.
28.What does the second paragraph mainly tell us
A.The way to build houses of dirt.
B.The best time to build houses of dirt.
C.The reasons to build houses of dirt.
D.The places to build houses of dirt.
29.Which of the following is the best place to build such houses in
A.Places where it rains most of the year.
B.Places where there are many storm clouds.
C.Places where there is little rain all the year around.
D.Places where it is cold in winter and hot in summer.
30.The first white settlers built houses with sods because .
A.the grass was as tall as oxen B.they were as strong as stones
C.they could make a garden on the roof D.they were lack of wood
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Sod houses could be destroyed by worms.
B.Sod houses could last as long as stone ones.
C.Sod bricks are baked in the oven.
D.Sod bricks are really made of pure dirt.

There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have a lot of friends at school. However, he
wasn't sure whether or not his schoolmates were his real friends, so he asked his grandpa for help.
The old man told him,“I just have what you exactly need, and it's in the attic. Wait a minute
here.”
Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there.
“Take it. It's a very special chair. It's rather tricky to sit on for it's invisible, but if you take it to
school and manage to sit on it, you'll be able to tell who your real friends are,” Grandpa said.
Mario was curious to know whether it was true or not, so he took the strange invisible chair
and set off for school. At break time, he asked his classmates to form a circle, and then he put himself inside, with his chair. “Nobody moves! You’re about to see something amazing.”
Then Mario tried to sit on the chair, but he missed and fell down onto his back. Everyone had
a pretty good laugh about it. Mario wouldn't be beaten. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, and kept falling to the ground...until, suddenly, he tried again and didn't fall over. This time he sat, hovering in mid-air...
Looking around, Mario saw George, Lucas and Diana—three of his best friends, holding him
up, so he wouldn't fall down. Meanwhile, many others he had thought of as friends did nothing but make fun of him, enjoying his every fall.
Leaving with his three friends, he explained to them how his grandpa had so cleverly thought
of a way to show him that true friends are those who care about us, and not just any acquaintance who happens to be passing by. Even less would a real friend be someone who takes joy in our misfortunes.
32.Why did Mario turn to his grandpa for help
A.Because he didn't like his school.
B.Because he couldn't make any friends.
C.Because he didn't get along with his schoolmates.
D.Because he couldn't find out who his true friends were.
33.Why was Mario able to hover in the mid-air
A.Because he managed to sit on the invisible chair finally.
B.Because his three friends held him up with their hands.
C.Because his classmates gave him a chair to sit on.
D.Because he could see the magic chair clearly.
34.Who are real friends according to the text
A.Those who laugh with us.
B.Those who take joy in our misfortunes.
C.Those who care about us when we are in trouble.
D.Those who care for us when we are popular at school.
35.How did Mario most probably feel in the end of the text
A.Happy. B.Unconcerned. C.Upset. D.Uncomfortable.

Simon was a curious boy. He lived with his grandfather. Simon was fond of reading
adventure stories. So he was always curious about the store room where his grandfather kept his
priceless antiques(古董). Though Simon knew his grandfather did not like anyone to touch his
rare collections, he quietly entered the storeroom without his grandfather’s permission one night.
Once inside the room, Simon stood on a chair. He lifted the big box where his grandfather
had kept many valuable watches bought from different countries he had visited. While getting
down from the chair, Simon's elbow(肘部)struck against the chair. When he tried his best to pull
his arm out, the box slipped out of his hands and fell onto the floor. All the watches lay all around. To his shock, he found the glass of his grandfather's favorite watch broken. Simon was afraid that his grandfather would come to know about the broken glass. He started picking up the pieces of glass hurriedly. Simon thought, My grandmother gifted the watch to my grandfather. This must be one of his most treasured possessions. How could I tell him that his favorite watch had broken He must be angry with me. If I do not tell him, he will not come to know about it. " Simon got nervous. His heart started beating faster. He put the broken watch back into the box and placed the box back on the shelf. Afterwards, he went to sleep. The next morning, Simon got up much earlier than before. The sleepless night made him

Having returned from the storeroom, his grandfather said, “I felt very angry when you had broken my precious watch that your grandmother gifted to me\ gifted by your grandmother on our first wedding anniversary. But don't worry. It can be mended." Simon felt relieved. His grandfather said in a soft voice, “It was brave enough of you to tell me about the broken watch. Simon said ,"I was scared at first , but I dared not tell a lie." Simon's grandfather smiled, " When I was at your age, I also broke my mother’s precious vase. I was scared to admit my mistake.
