The life of a premature (早产的) baby born during the winter storm in Texas was saved thanks to a
team of medical professionals, including a doctor and two nurses who traveled from east Austin to
Marble Falls in an effort to save a newborn baby's life.
When Arias began experiencing pains, she and her parents headed to the closest hospital, Baylor
Scott & White. Arias gave birth to her daughter, Zaylynn, who weighed just over one pound and was in
need of advanced special care. However, the hospital does not offer the specialized care premature babies
require.
"We had five or six people out at the nurses' station calling hospital networks all over the state of
Texas," said Meredith Schubert, the labor and delivery nurse on duty when Arias arrived. "Nobody could
answer our cry for help."
They finally reached Dr. John Loyd through a patient, division neonatologist chief at Dell Children's
Medical Center in Austin, Texas. Around 5 p.m., after already having worked a full shift, Loyd packed his
SUV with equipment and he and two NICU nurses set out for Marble Falls, about 55 miles away. The
drive took Loyd and the nurses about two hours as they drove in the night through ice and snow.
After safely arriving at the Marble Falls medical center around 8 p.m., the Dell Children's crew set
up a temporary newborn ICU. Together, the Dell Children's and Baylor Scott & White teams worked
around the clock to care for the mother and daughter.
Once the weather cleared enough to allow for a helicopter to safely land, Zaylynn was transferred to
Dell Children's, where there is a Level IV newborn intensive care unit.
"It was incredible when the helicopter lifted off. There were tears from all of us," said Schubert. "It
was a huge relief and sense of accomplishment and joy that Zaylynn was doing so well and getting to the
place that she needed to be."
Arias told KVUE that she was grateful to the doctors and nurses who worked together to save her
daughter.

You’ve ordered a new pair of shoes online. They arrive; you rush to the front door and carry the box
as you open it. You untie the laces, guide them toward your feet and they don’t fit.
So, back in the box they go and an hour later you drop them at the local collections store. It’s
disappointing. The shoes have never been worn and they’ll be making their way to a new home soon.
Right Wrong.
What does happen to our goods when we order online and then return them The reality is that much
of it simply ends up in landfill (垃圾场 ). Each year, 5 billion pounds of waste is generated through
returns in the world. In the US alone, customers return approximately 3.5 billion products, of which only
20% are actually faulty according to Optoro, a company which specializes in tackling the returns.
It turns out that returns create a real headache for companies. Many companies simply don’t have
the technology to handle these faults in returned goods, so it is often most profitable for them to sell them
cheaply to discounters via a web of shipping, driving and flying them around the globe, or to simply truck
them to the dump.
Optoro’s software helps retailers (零售商) and manufacturers resell unsold goods more easily. They
offer a number of options for retailers, including a website to resell their goods, called Blinq, as well as
helping with re-routing goods to donation, store shelves, Amazon or eBay. They estimate their work helps
reduce landfill waste by 70%.
Ann Starodaj, Senior Director of Sustainability at Optoro, says that while consumer habits might
still be harmful, creating a profitable and environmentally friendly fashion model from start to finish is

When put to tests, bees have long proved that they’ve got a lot more to offer than pollinating (授粉) ,
making honey and being loyal to a queen. The hard-working insects can change their behavior when
things seem difficult, and now some scientists find there is proof that they also like to play.
Scientists from Queen Mary University of London performed an experiment, in which they set up a
container that allowed bees to travel from their nest to a feeding area. But along the way, the bees could
choose to pass through a separate section with some small wooden balls. Over 18 days, the scientists
watched as the bees “went out of their way to roll wooden balls repeatedly, despite no apparent incentive
(刺激)to do so. ”
Earlier studies have shown that the black and yellow bugs are willing to learn new tricks in
exchange for food or other rewards. In this case, to get rid of external factors, scientists made sure the
bees had adapted to their new home and that their environment was stress-free.
The finding suggests that like humans, insects also interact with objects as a form of play. Also
similar to people, younger bees seem to be more playful than adult bees. “This research provides a strong
indication that insect minds are far more complicated than we imagine. There are lots of animals who
期中考试 高二英语 第 6 页 共 12页
play just for the purpose of enjoyment, but most examples come from young mammals (哺乳动物) and
birds,” said Lars Chittka, a professor of sensory and behavioral ecology at Queen Mary University of
London, who led the study.
The study’s first author, Samadi Galpay, who is a PhD student at Queen Mary University of London,
states that it is more evident that bees may be capable of experiencing feelings. “They may actually
experience some kind of positive emotional states, even if basic, like other larger animals do. This finding
has effects on our understanding of the sense and welfare of insects, which, consequently, encourages us
to respect and protect wildlife on Earth ever more,” she says.
32. What is the new finding about bees
A. They are fond of having fun. B. They are faithful to the queen.
C. They are adaptable to changes. D. They are skilled at rolling balls.
33. How did scientists remove external influences in the experiment
A. By teaching bees new tricks. B. By rewarding bees with food.
C. By making bees feel at home. D. By building new homes for bees.
34. What are Lars Chittka’s words mainly about
A. The forms of bees’ interaction. B. The complexity of bees’ minds.
C. The examples of mammals’ play. D. The purpose of mammals’ enjoyment.
35. What does Samadi Galpay say about the study result
A. It backs up prior understanding of insects. B.It reveals reasons for bees’ positive feelings.
C. It drives research on animals’ emotional state. D. It contributes to wildlife conservation on Earth.

It was the middle of the day with the bright sun, blue sky, green grass, and a soft breeze (微风). It
was a great day to play outside and the best day of my life because I got a new ball and a new bike as my
sixth birthday presents, and I was visiting my cousin, Kristy, at her house.

“Here I go!” shouted David while kicking my new ball. David lived next door and was older than
me. I thought he was a wild child, but he was actually very kind. The ball went flying as if it were going
to space. “That was high!” Kristy said in surprise and we went after the ball. We all had a great time.
Later we had supper and the food my aunt made was good. While Kristy was helping do the dishes,
David and I ran outside to play. We started taking turns riding my bike. David suggested that we ride it to
the forest. And I agreed. David and I got on the bike and David started riding fast.
As we rode through the forest, I felt the wind brushing my face. It felt so great and free. Suddenly
the bike hit a fallen branch and we went flying off the bike. Lying on the ground, I felt dizzy (眩晕的). I
checked myself for injuries and saw some but they didn’t upset me.
“David!” I shouted out anxiously.
“Hey,” said a voice. I turned my head and it was David, who was standing behind me, holding my
broken bike. At the sight of my disabled bike, I was so sad that I couldn’t hold back my tears. It took
David some time to calm me down.

第一节:
Dear schoolmates,
Recently, there is a common phenomenon that most of the high school students can't get enough sleep, because they stay up late for various reasons, such as heavy homework or being addicted to digital devices.
It's of key importance for us students to sleep regularly and get enough sleep, which helps us concentrate in class and live happily and healthily. If you stay up late frequently, you will fail to focus on class. What s worse, too much time spent on digital devices really does great harm to your health.
In order to gain enough sleep and healthy life, all of you are highly recommended to plan your time properly for homework, take physical exercise regularly, and keep away from digital devices before sleep. Only by doing this will you enjoy a healthy and happy life.

第二节:
When we realized it was time to walk home, we found ourselves lost. It was getting darker and darker. I felt so scared that tears rolled down my face again. David tried to comfort me. He told me that he once made some marks on the trees in the forest, which might help us find the way home. Therefore, we made efforts to look for the marks but failed. Having walked anxiously for about an hour in the forest, we didn’t find our way out.
It was completely dark when we saw fireworks (烟花) being set off in the distance. We ran excitedly in that direction as fast as possible. Soon we found my aunt’s house, in front of which my cousin Kristy was holding some fireworks and lighting them. Seeing us back safe, Kristy cheerfully hugged us. She told us that when noticing we had been away for long, she was concerned about our safety. She set off fireworks to draw our attention and guide us. It was an unforgettable experience. Without David’s comfort and Kristy’s fireworks, I would have lost in the forest forever.
