Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with
the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.
My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.”
I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely
to cause accidents. I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment,
whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge
of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.
I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost
a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you”. When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from
my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’
t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realised that
I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.
I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to
期中考试 高一英语 第 4 页 共17页
avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection,
I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the
best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.
24.Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule
A.Start the car the moment everyone is seated.
B.Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.
C.Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.
D.Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.
25.The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to ________.
A.keep her appointment with the eye doctor
B.meet her father who was already an old man
C.join in the holiday celebration of the company
D.finish her work before the deadline approached
26.What is the underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 closest in meaning to
A.Avoided. B.Lacked. C.Abandoned. D.Taken.
27.What is the best title for the passage
A.The Emotional Well-being B.The Two Saddest Words
C.The Most Useful Rule D.The Peace of Mind

The Chongyang Festival falls on the 9th day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, so it is also known as the Double Ninth Festival.
The festival is held in the golden season of autumn, at harvest-time. The bright clear
weather and the joy of bringing in the harvest make for a festival happy atmosphere. The Chongyang Festival is usually perfect for outdoor activities. Climbing a mountain,
carrying a spray of dogwood (茱萸) and drinking chrysanthemum (菊花) wine have become
the traditional activities of the festival.
The dogwood is a plant with a strong fragrance(香气), and is often used as a Chinese herbal medicine. People in ancient times believed it could drive away evil spirits and
期中考试 高一英语 第 5 页 共17页
prevent one from getting a chill (寒意) in late autumn. So its history as a medicine goes back many centuries. But the custom of carrying a spray of dogwood during the Double Ninth
Festival is slowly dying out and many people in the cities do not even know what a dogwood spray looks like.
EarlyinHan Dynasty,about 2000years ago,peopleusedtoclimb ahighplatformoutside
the capital city of Chang’an on the occasion of the Chongyang Festival. For many, it was the last outing of the year before the onset of winter. The custom evolved (发展
成) into present form, when people go climbing to get some exercises as well as enjoy
the autumn scenery.
But what about those people who live in plains far from any mountain The problem
is solved by going for a picnic and eating cakes. The Chinese word for “cake” is “Gao”, a homonym (同音异义词) of the Chinese word for “high”. Mountains are high, so eating
cakes can, by a stretch of the imagination, take the place of going for a climb.
28.Why do people carry a spray of dogwood on Chongyang Festival
A.Because the dogwood is a plant with a strong fragrance.
B.Because the dogwood can be used as a Chinese herbal medicine.
C.Because the dogwood has a long history as a medicine.
D.Because people believed the dogwood could drive away evil spirits and prevent one from chill.
29.People now climb mountains on the Chongyang Festival .
A.to have a last outing of the year before the onset of winter
B.to get some dogwoods
C.to climb a high platform
D.to get some exercise as well as enjoy the beautiful autumn scenery
30.People living in plains far from mountains eat cakes because .
A.the Chinese word for “cake” is “Gao”
B.the Chinese word “Gao” for “cake” has the same sound with the Chinese word for “high”
C.they often take cakes to go for a picnic on the festival
期中考试 高一英语 第 6 页 共17页
D.they like eating cakes
31.Which of the following is TRUE
A.The Double Ninth Festival is on September 9th.
B.People climbed mountains to celebrate the Chongyang Festival in Han Dynasty.
C.People often celebrate the Chongyang Festival in the open air.
D.Eating cakes is just like climbing mountains.

Researchers from Arizona State University (ASU) published their latest report. When men expressed their opinions with anger, people considered them more believable. But when
women expressed anger, they were viewed as more emotional and, thus, less convincing.
In other words, a man could benefit from using anger in power and persuasion. A woman, however, could be ignored or hurt by her group if she expressed anger.
The study was based on the responses of 210 students. They were shown evidence online from a murder (谋杀) trial. A man was said to have murdered his wife. The students were
asked to decide if the man was guilty or not. Before making their decisions, the students
discussed the case online with five jurors (陪审员). But these jurors were computers
generating responses and comments. Some of the jurors had male identities. Others had female identities.
Some male jurors were anger about the verdict (裁决). When this happened, the students reacted by doubting their own decisions about the case. Confidence in their responses
on the verdict dropped. However, when female jurors seemed angry, the students became more confident in their original verdicts.
Jessica Salerno, a psychologist and co-author of the study, said, “Our results
provide something important for any woman who is trying to have an influence on a decision in her workplace and everyday life.”
In a political debate, a female candidate might have less influence if she shows anger.
In the entertainment world, actor Jennifer Lawrence recently wrote that women and men
in Hollywood get the opposite reactions when expressing their opinions angrily. “All
I hear and see are men speaking their opinions,” she wrote. “When I give mine in the
期中考试 高一英语 第 7 页 共17页
quite similar manner, you would have thought I said something annoying.”
What’s the new finding from the ASU report
Men usually do harm to angry women.
Women are more likely to become angry.
People prefer to believe the angry women.
Angry men appear to gain influence in a group.
In the study, the students would be sure about their decisions when_________.
male jurors agreed with them
they became angry with the jurors
angry female jurors didn’t agree with them
angry male jurors showed opposite opinions
Jessica Salerno thinks the study ____________.
helps women avoid losing influence
asks men to get away from angry women
causes men to change their attitude to women
shows men and women should be treated equally
The author supports Jessica Salerno by _____________.
A. presenting research findings B. setting down general rules
C. making comparisons D. giving examples

Forgiveness
To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is
possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People
who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.

Dear Tom,
I'm glad to have received your email asking about our sports activities. I am writing to share some details with you.
Every week, we have two PE classes, in which our school offers us opportunities to do a variety of sports. We play basketball, run for exercise, and take part in all kinds of sports competitions. Besides, we all participate in Sunshine Sports during the 30-minute break.
As senior students, we benefit a lot from sport activities. Not only can we build up strength through those activities, but we can reduce the anxiety and burden of our study. Furthermore, we are learning teamwork and sports spirit. Of all the sports, I like badminton best, which helps me to keep fit and build perseverance. I believe a good health is the guarantee of successful completion of studies in school.
Looking forward to hearing from you again.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

M:Imagine a kind of new chocolate that keeps you looking younger. It seems too good to be true, but a team of scientists believe they have invented anti-aging chocolate. A laboratory working with the UK’s Cambridge University has been working on a method to keep away wrinkles and keep the skin looking younger .The new product is called Cambridge Beauty Chocolate.
The makers will start selling it next month. The laboratory has not said anything about the price yet,but it is likely to be quite expensive. The laboratory used a special chemical in the chocolate. The chemical they used is one that gives food pink colour. The scientists say that the chemical can bring parts of the skin of a 50-to 60- year-old person back to the levels of a 20-to 30- year-old.They said people who ate the chocolate could see changes in their skin within just three weeks. A spokesman for the laboratory said it took a decade of research and trials with more than 3,000 volunteers to produce the chocolate. The chocolate bar will only be sold in boxes of 21 bars-one a day for three weeks.Other scientists say more research is needed for people to know whether or not the chocolate actually works.
