In both novels and reality news, we read stories about the super-intelligent dolphins saving humans. Humans, in return, are also giving a helping hand to injured dolphins.
On April 7,2022, a gray male adult dolphin, about 2.6 meters long and weighing more than 180 kilograms, lost his way and was stranded (搁浅) on the shore near Qizi Bay, Hainan province. When people found him, he was badly hurt.
Luckily, he was saved and then taken to the marine (海洋) biology research base in Danzhou for further treatment. Medical workers tested his blood, gave physical examinations and medicines to his wounds right away. Due to the scrupulous care of the medical workers, who did their best to look after him all day and all night, the dolphin was out of danger. After more than two months, the dolphin’s health improved greatly.
During his gradual recovery, the medical workers put a swimming ring on him to help him float. When he got used to his own movements again, they moved him to a pool so that he could slowly get back to swimming freely. What’s more, to help him regain his hunting ability, they put live fish in the pool for him to hunt and eat. In this way, the dolphin could get used to nature again.

You may not realize it, but you do it all the time. That is, begin with the end in mind. You draw up a plan before you build a house. You read instructions before you make a cake. You create an outline before you write a paper. It’s part of life.
Let’s have a begin-with-the-end-in-mind experience by using your imagination. Find a place where you can be alone. First, clear your mind. Don’t think about anything else. Then breathe deeply, and open your brain wide. Now, let’s come to the key part of the experience. In your mind, picture someone walking toward you about half a block away. At first you can’t see who it is. As this person gets closer and closer, you suddenly realize, believe it or not, it’s you. But it’s not you today, it’s you as you’d like to be one year from now. Now think deeply. Ask yourself the following questions:
What have you done with your life over the past year How do you feel inside What do you look like Has your personality grown Remember, this is you as you would like to be one year from now.
You can go back to reality (现实) now. If you actually tried this, you probably got in touch with your deeper self. You got a feel for what’s important to you and what goals (目标) you’d like to achieve next year.
________ First, you’re at important crossroads in life, and the paths you choose now can influence you forever. Second, if you don’t decide your own future, someone else will do it for you.
As Li Ping, a middle school student in Shanghai, discovered beginning with the end in mind is a powerful way to help turn your dreams into realities:
When I feel stressed, I’ve found it really helps me. I go someplace where I can be alone, and try to see the whole picture of my dream life—and then I begin to think about what I need to get there. This method started when I was a ninth grader, and today I’m making some of those pictures in mind become a reality.

“Come on, Simon,” said Gabe. “Let’s try out new saucers (滑雪盘)!” But it seemed that Simon didn’t want to go.
“I’m not ready,” Simon said.
“What’s to get ready ” Gabe asked.
Simon wanted to say “What if the other kids laugh if I mess up ” But he said nothing.
“You’re going to miss a lot of fun,” Gabe said.
“Go with your brother, Simon,” said Mom. “He will show you how to do it.”
The brothers walked up the hill, where kids were taking turns on saucers, shrieking all the way down. Simon couldn’t tell if their cries meant they were happy or terrified (恐惧的). He knew which one he felt. Gabe was taking the steps two at a time. “Come on!” he called to Simon.
At the top, Gabe and Simon joined a group of kids waiting for their turns. Simon kept stamping his feet to hide his inner fear. His brother looked at him and asked, “Do you want me to go down with you ”
Seeing his older brother’s face, Simon calmed down. Gabe had helped Simon learn to ride a bike. The first day Simon was at his new school, Gabe had drawn a map that showed where to find the lunchroom, the gym, and the bus area.
Simon knew Gabe wanted to fly down the hill without him.
“Are you going or not ” a girl behind him said.
Simon took a deep breath. “I’m going. By myself.”
“Good for you, Simon,” Gabe said.
Simon sat on the saucer, with his heart beating fast. Gabe gave him a push on the back. Suddenly, he was rushing down the hill wildly. He couldn’t stop. Faster and faster he went. He couldn’t even shout out.
The ground leveled off (平坦). Simon’s saucer slowed down and then came to a stop. He rolled (打滚) out and lay on his back, breathing hard.
“Are you all right ” Gabe shouted to Simon.
Simon sat up slowly and looked around.
“Simon, say something!” Gabe shouted again.
Simon smiled widely, “Again ”

The ocelot is also known as the “Painted Leopard (豹)”. It is a kind of medium-sized wild cat found in South America, Central America and Mexico. There are many interesting facts about the ocelot.
Spots (斑点) and stripes (条纹) mark an ocelot’s fur. The fur pattern is different for each ocelot. The shapes and colors of the fur are pretty to see, but ocelots don’t want to be seen. The fur helps them hide in trees. That makes it easier for them to move towards their prey (猎物) very quietly without being seen or heard. The fur also helps ocelots hide themselves from hungry animals when it’s time for ocelots to have a short sleep. With the fur, they can rest in trees or other thick leaves comfortably during the day.
Mostly found in forests, seldom do ocelots climb trees, though they are excellent climbers. Ocelots feed mainly on the ground. Ocelots are small animals compared to jaguars (美洲豹). Almost all of the prey that ocelots hunt is far smaller than themselves. These fast hunters eat small monkeys, small deer, rabbits, birds, fish, and so on. Studies suggest that the ocelot follows and finds prey by following its smells.
Ocelots are good swimmers and have good vision (视力), including night vision. During the night, they like to hunt along open roads. Ocelots are very territorial (领域性的) and enjoy being alone. An ocelot will fight hard, sometimes even to death, to guard and protect an area of land that it believes to be its own. However, an ocelot will sometimes share its land with another ocelot.

Betty: I do, too. People are wealthier today, and they live longer than they did in the past.
Mum: That’s true. We know more about medicine today, and there’s less fear of getting ill because we know how to deal with the ordinary diseases. But people don’t take as much exercise as they used to.
Betty: I suppose that’s because more people have cars, and they walk or use their bikes less.
Mum: Some people think life in the past was simpler and healthier than today. More wealth sometimes means less health. When the number of cars is doubled, the pollution is also doubled, or even worse.
Betty: What about work Do people work as hard as they did fifty years ago
Mum: Yes, and they sometimes work harder. People seldom say they have enough spare time! Why don’t you go and ask Mrs Li, our neighbor She’s over seventy years old. She’s seen how life has changed.

Manatees(海牛) are huge sea animals. They can be as long as 4 meters and weigh up to 590 kilograms when they grow up. Although they’re very large, manatees only eat sea grass and other plants that grow in the sea. That’s one reason why they’re sometimes called “sea cows”. They spend most of their time in warm water looking for food.
Since 1967 Florida’s manatees have been on the US government’s list of endangered animals, most threats( 威胁) to manatees come from humans. One of the biggest problems the animals face is boats.Manatees are curious( 好奇的) and quite slow. That has led to thousands of manatees being hurt or killed by boats. With protection, the number of manatees managed to rise again. At one point, there were only about 2, 000 manatees left in Florida. But by 2016, there were about 8, 800 manatees.
But now manatees are facing a new challenge(挑战) : They can’t get enough to eat. Because of pollution, sea grass that manatees depend on began to disappear around 2011. Last year, 1, 101 manatees died. That was a record. Most starved to death because they had no grass to eat. Many of the manatees that remain are quite thin.
So last December, government wildlife experts came up with a plan to provide emergency(紧急) food for the manatees. They decided to feed them on green vegetables like lettuce and cabbage. The feeding place, a warm and clean water area, is popular with the manatees.
This plan is very successful. Around 350 manatees come here every day to get food. Sometimes, as many as 800 manatees can be seen here. Even so, scientists worry that many more manatees could starve this winter. So Florida is now working to help sea grass beds grow. But that will take time.
