I was in about 40 feet of water all by myself. I knew I should not have gone alone, but I was rather competent and just took a chance. There was not much current, and the water was so warm, clear and attractive. When I got a cramp (抽筋), I realized at once how foolish I was. I was not too alarmed, but was completely doubled up with stomach cramps. I tried to remove my weight belt, but I was so doubled up I could not get to the catch. I was sinking and began to feel more frightened, unable to move. I could see my watch and knew there was only a little more time on the tank before I would be out of air. I tried to massage (按摩) my stomach. I wasn’t wearing a wet suit, but couldn’t straighten out and couldn’t get to the cramped muscles with my hands. I thought, “I can’t go like this! I have things to do!” I just couldn’t die this way with no one to even know what happened to me. I called out in my mind, “Somebody, something, help me!”
I was not prepared for what happened. Suddenly I felt a push from behind me under the arm. I thought, “Oh no, sharks!” I felt real fear and desperate. But my arm was being lifted forcefully. Around into my field of vision came an eye — the most extraordinary eye I could ever imagine. It was smiling. It was the eye of a big dolphin. Looking into that eye, I knew I was safe. I was flooded with relief. I felt that the animal was comforting me as well as lifting me toward the surface. My stomach cramps went away and I relaxed with security.
At the surface it drew me all the way into shore. It took me into water so shallow that I began to be concerned that it might be beached, and I pushed it back a little deeper, where it waited, watching me, I guess to see if I was all right.

My first year of high school felt awkward. It felt strange starting over as a freshman. The school was twice as big as my old school, and to make matters worse, my closest friends were sent to a different high school. I felt very isolated.
I missed my old teachers so much that I went back and visit them. They encouraged me to get involved in school activities so that I could meet new people. I understood the psychology in what they were saying, but I took some comfort in it nevertheless.
One Sunday afternoon not long after I had started high school,I was sitting at home at our dining-room table doing homework. It was a cold and windy fall day, and we had a fire going in our fireplace. Suddenly,I smelled something strange, and then I noticed it: smoke pouring in through the seams of the ceiling. The smoke began to fill the room so quickly that we could barely see.Feeling our way to the front door,we all ran out into the front yard. By the time we made our way outside, the whole roof was swallowed up in flames and it was spreading quickly.
···Five hours later, the fire was finally put out by the firemen. Our house was almost completely burned down. Then all at once it hit me-the new school, the fire-I broke down in tears and cried and cried. I was suffering loss, big time.
The next day,Monday,I went to school. The clothes I was wearing looked weird,I had no books or homework, and my backpack was gone.
It always seems that bad news spreads quickly, and in my case, it was no different. Everyone in high school, including the teachers, was aware of my difficult situation. I was embarrassed as if, somehow, I were responsible.

I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school. I won the B Division long jump and was a good sprinter (短跑运动员). As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meet. Before the sports meet, I had put in a lot of hard work and dedication during the training sessions. I woke up early every morning to go for runs and did countless drills to improve my technique. My teammates and I supported and encouraged each other during training, pushing ourselves to do better and achieve our goals.
The meet lasted two days, I had no events scheduled for the first day. So I kept myself busy by watching the others compete. Large tents were provided for the young competitors on one side of the track. Despite being assigned the last tent that was furthest from the track, I made the best of the situation by decorating it with our school colors and creating a supportive atmosphere.
The next day, I was getting ready for my events. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by the 8×50m relay later in the afternoon. I thought I was a pretty good jumper, but as the competition began, I realized I was vastly outclassed. We finished our jumps, and I came in fourth place, just missing out on a medal.
That was disappointing, but I reminded myself that we still had a chance in the 8×50m relay, for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg. The race date arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a tense minute or so, I heard the starter’s gun go off. When the first runners took off, I watched nervously and excitedly as my team runners kept up with the others. As they got closer, I realized we were at least in second place.

Raj learns a lesson
Raj is a middle-aged man. Although he was born in a poor family, he was raised well by his father and mother. His father owned a welding (焊接) shop, and used to work for more than 12 hours a day, so that his family could lead a comfortable life.
However, Raj’s father could not earn sufficient money to provide a decent life to his family. Raj was an average student in school, and used to score around 70 percent marks. Raj’s dream was to become a doctor. Since his marks weren’t very high, he could not get the desired course that he wanted to study. Instead, he joined a bachelor’s degree course, completed the course successfully, and got a job in a company.
In order not to depend on Raj, his father continued to work in his shop. After getting a permanent job, Raj’s parents wanted him to marry. He got married to a girl from his native town, and meanwhile was promoted in his job. After a few years, his wife gave birth to beautiful twin boys.
Later, Raj began to earn a handsome salary, and started to live luxuriously. He bought a new house and a new car. Some of the luxuries were really unnecessary. Almost 6 to 7 years later, Raj was neither able to manage all the household expenses, nor pay for the children’s education and other basic necessities.
It so happened that Raj’s father fell sick, and as a result, could not continue his work. He requested Raj to give some money for his treatment and other household expenses. Raj, who was already suffering from financial crisis, not only shouted at his parents but also complained to his parents, “You never give me what I needed and wanted and it took me more than 10 years to get settled. Now, while I am again struggling for money, you are not doing anything to help me, but instead are a burden to me! So, please don’t come to me again.”
His parents were left shocked.

I frequently joke that my family heirlooms (传家宝)are plastic. My parents grew up poor and over the years, as a family we were comfortable but didn’t have a lot of things which would be considered luxuries: jewelry, family vacations, china, fancy cars, etc. My father went on a trip to Italy with my aunts one year and brought my mother a ring. It was her favorite stone. She valued that ring because it was one of the nicest things she ever had and represented my dad’s love for her. Sometimes they quarreled but had a deep love for each other. He died in 1980, aged 53 after a difficult battle with cancer.
She had lost some weight and wore the ring to work on a different finger. During her shift the ring slipped off and she realized it the following day. She was sick about it after having tried to find it with no luck. At the point when I talked to her she was trying to face the fact that she would never see it again. Her voice sounded hollow and weak which I assumed was due to the nature of the conversation. She choked back some tears.
I decided to look for the ring at my mom’s work. She was working at the Burlington Coat Factory Department store at the time in the Youth Dept. The Youth Dept was huge and packed with clothes, toys and tables. It was always a mess even when someone was working in it. I started row by row crawling (爬行) on the floor to see if I could find the ring under all the clothes. As I worked my way through the Youth Dept, I tried not to panic. I was amazed that no one asked me what I was doing. At that time I encountered one of my mom’s co-workers who didn’t understand English very well and tried to explain what I was doing. She didn’t seem to understand but she didn’t try to stop me either.

47. When I took off the weight belt and oxygen tank, I went back into the ocean to the dolphin. I felt so light and free and alive, and just wanted to play in the sun and the water happily and freely. The
dolphin took me back out and played around in the water with me. I noticed that there were a lot of dolphins there, farther out. However, I did not feel scared at all. I relaxed, hugging it. How I wished to stay with him forever.
After a while it brought me back to shore. I was very tired at that time, almost collapsing and he made sure that I was safe in the shallowest water. Then he turned sideways with one eye looking into mine. We stayed that way for what seemed like a very long time, timeless I guess, staring into space, with personal thoughts from the past going through my mind. Afterwards, he made just one loud sound and went out to join the others. And all of them left.

The next day at school, people were acting even more strange than usual. I was getting ready for gym class. People were around me, asking me to hurry up. It almost seemed that they were trying to shove me into the gym—then I saw why. There was a big table set up with all kinds of “stuff” on it, just for me. They had taken up a collection and bought me school supplies, notebooks, all kinds of different clothes—jeans, tops, sweat-suits. It was like Christmas. I was overcome by emotion. Their genuine concern really touched me and I made friends that day.
A month later, I was at my house watching them rebuild it. But this time it was different—I wasn’t alone. I was with two of my new friends from school. As we were planning my new bedroom, all the overwhelming feelings of loss and tragedy seemed to diminish. It took a fire for me to stop focusing on my feelings of insecurity and open up to all the wonderful people around me. When I was watching my house being rebuilt, I realized my life was doing the same thing.

47.One possible version:
My turn arrived and I took the baton (接力棒) cleanly and began my run. The air rushed past me as I moved closer to the next runner. Then disaster struck! I saw a boy run across the track into my path out of nowhere. I couldn’t get away from him fast enough. We were sent somersaulting over him after colliding with a crunch. Because I was young and agile, I was able to quickly pick myself up and continue the race. However, the collision cost us valuable time. I handed the baton to the next runner. I knew everything was lost when he ran with all his might, but it was too late. We’d blown our chance at a medal.
As a result, I left the meet empty-handed. As a result, we just assumed it was bad luck. I, for one, felt terrible for letting the team down, but what was done was done, and we had no choice but to accept it. Anyway, it had been an eventful but unsatisfying day for me. And I learned about failure and success and how to deal with them, and I am grateful for the lessons.

47. After a week, while on an official tour, he met a small boy aged about 10 years selling toys. The boy requested Raj to buy something. Raj asked the boy why he was selling toys instead of studying. The boy replied, “My father met with an accident a year ago and he lost one hand. He cannot work now. My mother works as a maid in a few houses. I have no choice but to help my parents by selling these toys. I go to school in the morning, and sell toys in the evenings. I work for 3 hours a day and study at night!”
Raj purchased a few toys from the little boy. He thought about what the boy had said. He realized that he had been wrong in the way he treated his parents. He had learnt a lesson from the small boy. At a very small age, this boy was helping his parents, but Raj, in order to meet the demands of his luxurious lifestyle, had ignored his parents. Raj decided to make an apology to them the moment he got back home.

47. When I got to the last row, I still didn’t find the ring. I stood by a shallow table with some baseball caps on it. I thought that I might put an add in the newspaper although deep in my heart I didn’t feel that there was a good chance that someone would see it. But I didn’t want to give up. My hand was on the edge of the table and I cast my eyes downward in desperation.
That ring meant so much to my Mom, so I never gave up. The next thing I saw was the ring in the front part of the table. I was astonished and excited. Immediately I called my Mom and now I was choking back tears. I said: “Mom, I found the ring!” She burst into tears and said: “Oh my God, I never thought I was going to see it again. Thank you!” I gave the ring to her. For her, the real value was not about what it cost, it was about meaning in her life.
