第三部分:阅读理解 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
When I was seven years old, my family made me an ant farm. First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box. Then we waited for the ants to arrive.
After the ants were in the glass farm, they started to make tunnels (地道). I was amazed that each one knew exactly what to do. Each had its own job.
On the fifth day a tragedy (悲剧) happened. I put my face so close to the glass farm that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Although the ants remained alive after their earthquake, one by one they began to die. I was scared as I watched them give up building their tunnels to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm.
My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness. They simply could not stand that their tunnels were gone.
Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm. Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.
Over the years, I came to realize the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were able to make an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be admired for their hard work.
But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity(逆境) is a natural part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we cannot give up when we are sad. We have to realize that if a tunnel is gone, we must build another.
Giving up, I say, is not a good choice.

Gloria arrived in Barbados on 26 January, 2008 after rowing * across the Atlantic for three months and a half. Gloria was in one of 36 small wooden rowing boats that set off on 7 October, 2007 from Tenerife Island on the Atlantic Rowing Challenge Race. Each boat was exactly the same design and each one had food for the journey. There were two people in each boat and their challenge was to row across the Atlantic, a journey of about 3.360 kilometers.
Gloria began the journey with her husband in a small boat. However, after 14 days he became very afraid of the huge ocean and was not able to go on, so he left her with the help of a helping boat. This did not make Gloria give up. Instead, she decided that she would continue by herself. So, for the next hundred days, she rowed her small boat alone and fought against the waves and the winds, and her own fears.
When she finally arrived in Barbados, Gloria was not willing to leave her boat although her husband and family were there to greet her. She sat so long in the boat that she could hardly stand, her husband had to carry her off the boat. After that, the first thing she did was to drink a toast to her small boat, the very special lady. This lady carried her safely through many storms on her long journey and she loved it.
Gloria is really a brave woman. She has become the tenth woman in the world to row across the Atlantic. Like the others, she has experienced great joys and terrible things. 阅读下面的短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到相应的位置上。
Exercise is often suggested for sleeping difficulties, and it does have a beneficial effect. However, experts say the influence is not immediate, and can take up some time to take effect.
Dr. Kelly Baron said: "If you have insomnia(失眠),you won't exercise yourself into sleep right away. It's a long-term job. You have to keep at it and not get discouraged."
Dr. Baron decided to carry out her own research after hearing her patients with insomnia complain that the exercise didn't help them right away. She said: "They'd say, ' I exercised so hard yesterday and didn't sleep at all'. It's thought that exercise improves sleep, but I thought it probably wasn't that simple for people with insomnia.
Most previous studies have been carried out on healthy sleepers. Dr. Baron's research is the first one. She looked at the data from older women with insomnia over a 16-week period. She said: "People have to realize that even if they don't want to exercise, that's the time they need to dig in their heels (决不妥协) and get themselves out there. The key message was persistence(坚持). Write a note on your mirror saying ' Just Do It!', and you can see wonders in four months. Most importantly, it will help in the long run." Dr. Baron also warned that insomnia could also make people less willing to exercise.
Rather than medicine treatments, exercise may be a healthier way to improve sleep because it could address the potential(潜在的) problems. This study shows exercise and sleep affect each other in both directions: regular long-term exercise is good for sleep, but poor sleep can also lead to less exercise. So in the end, sleep still works better as far as health is concerned.

Good afternoon, everyone!
The topic……
Living in an environment full of fierce competition, we , a generation born in the 90s, are faced with more difficulties, problems and competition. In this case, we are deverloping our special manners and values, which has raised people's concern.
The worry that we care too much about ourselves and are unwilling to cooperate with others, which makes it hard for us to achieve success. Besides, they consider us as lacking in determination (strong will), often feeling frustrated and easily giving up. They are also concerned that we don't have clear goals. Some are eager to win instant fame and follow fashion blindly.
However, we have our own advantages despite some weaknesses. Firstly, we have the courage to meet challenges and take risks, which help realize our dreams. In addition, we are quick- minded and creative, and we can work efficiently. Yet, we still need to learn more from those experienced. Do please trust us!
